Net Neutrality was repealed

Now the fight moves to the courts.

Thank you for putting that the fight still has to go to the courts, the amount of people immediately going "This is the last day of the internet!!" is too high; That's not how it works. There's still a fighting chance.

NY and WA AGs are already suing.

The courts aren't going to do fucking jackshit. It's over; back to the stone age for us. Only possible way to fix it would be to nuke Washington from orbit. Or maybe the US as a whole.

It's a decision by a regulatory agency, not an amendment to the constitution

Even if it were a constitutional amendment, it could be repealed/amended again, like prohibition.

Yes, of course - having to spend less time on the internet is totally worth blowing up an entire state/country full of innocent people. I'd prefer net neutrality too, but I think living with worse internet service IS a survivable thing. Loads of people in the world do do it.... and have done, historically. Honestly, the amount people are glued to the internet these days is completely insane. Yes, it's useful and fun. But it's not as if all knowledge and communication will cease to exist without it.

I don't think it's the last day of the Internet, but expect some ugly deals going on where Netflix is concerned, and I'm a slight bit worried about fannish sites like AO3 if Time-Warner decides they're the legal equivalent of Napster and chooses to kill them through throttling.

This is definitely bad for Netflix, but I think Netflix is completely fucked over the mid-to-long term regardless.

Like, net neutrality is probably not even the worst news for Netflix today. The Disney/Fox merger is probably a bigger deal IMO.

Hey if it means my neighbors have to pay more for hogging all of the internet bandwidth by streaming Netflix 24/7 then I am okay with this.

I think places to post fanfic on will always have a way of enduring. Even if we have to go back to zines or mailing lists or just posting them in places not specifically designed for fic - like how, for some god unknown reason, people used to use quizilla back in the mid 00's. People are resourceful.

I’m worried about libraries and schools and universities. I work at a library where the church next door shared a parking lot with us for many years. Then the church sold the land to a developer, and for a year, they fenced off their portion of the parking lot, which included the entrance. They said they’d let the public access the library if the city paid them $3,000/month, and for almost a year, the city wouldn’t pay, and our circ tanked. Now they’ve started paying. They could hire two of me for the cost of renting that entrance. I’m afraid the internet’s about to get like that.

So, wait, people couldn't access the library at all? Or how does that work?

Probably the parking lot has one entrance, which was on the church's side of the property line. So, when the developer fenced off the property, they blocked the entrance to the entire parking lot. Meaning library patrons had to park elsewhere (which may be difficult).

This is actually a pretty common problem that cities face, especially with church sales.

IANAL but shouldn't there be, like, easements and right-of-way and shit for access if there's a shared parking lot?

You'd think so, right? I don't know a whole lot about the subject tbh, I've just seen articles about the issue and run into cases of it irl.

afaik it mostly happens with older properties (like a lot of churches) and old civic buildings which get grandfathered in even if they don't meet modern standards for parking lot access and stuff like that.

If there's street-side parking available anywhere within a few blocks, it's totally possible that the library legally has "enough" parking (in which case it might be difficult or impossible to go to court over the parking lot being blocked). That stuff is calculated based on the total capacity of the building, so a building that holds x people needs y spots within z radius.

But even if they don't have enough parking, I suspect that legally it would be the city's or library's responsibility to fix the issue by building a driveway on their side of the divide.

Frankly, I think that net neutrality is an inevitability over the long term. Net neutrality is popular and it's an issue that the voters care about. I would be shocked if, the next time that there's a Democratic congress and president - which will almost certainly be in 2020 - there's not going to be a bill to enshrine net neutrality as law.

That doesn't mean that we can stop caring about it over the next 3 years - 3 years is a long time and of course the Democratic Party would be more than happy to give it away to the telecoms if people didn't care about it. But the more people care about it, the harder it's going to be for them to do so.
