Tried of people acting like the new star wars movie is under-preforming because people are bigots or whatever instead of that it sucks.

Re: Unpopular opinions

(Anonymous) 2017-12-23 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
It doesn't suck. It's good as shit. People who think it sucks would probably have hated Empire in 1980, and for basically the same reasons.

There's two people who hate it - bigots, and people who have legitimate grievances with it. Same with any movie, really.

I personally liked it a great deal.

Re: Unpopular opinions

(Anonymous) 2017-12-23 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually liked it a lot more than TFA, which I enjoyed at the time but doessn't hold up to a rewatch particularly well, IMO. My biggest issues with the story were holdovers from TFA, and I thought TLJ did as well with those issues as could be expected. And kudos to them for making Kylo Ren 1) ditch his stupid Vader cosplay mask and 2) stop acting like an emo 14-year-old for at least part of the movie. Oh, and the Space!Morocco subplot could have been edited down to about a third of its final length without losing anything, but it was hardly the most egregious self-indulgence to show up in a Star Wars movie, so whatever.

Do you mean Space!Monaco?

Because referring to Morocco really confused me.

Re: Unpopular opinions

(Anonymous) 2017-12-24 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
I absolutely did.

Re: Unpopular opinions

(Anonymous) 2017-12-23 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
By what definition is it under-performing?

Re: Unpopular opinions

(Anonymous) 2017-12-23 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
It's underperforming compared to TFA - it's about $100 million short of where TFA was in its release cycle, I think.

Re: Unpopular opinions

(Anonymous) 2017-12-23 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
da

But there was no expectation that it would match/outperform TFA. That's not how sequel movies work.

Re: Unpopular opinions

(Anonymous) 2017-12-23 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm kind of surprised how polarizing it seems to be. It got decent reviews (a few reasonable critiques among the praises) but it seems people either love it, or they are butthurt as fuck about it.

I think the movie did a lot of things really well, though was a bit too long and some parts could have been condensed or written a little bit better (the Rose/Finn stuff comes to mind). But the really controversial bit was how they portrayed Luke Skywalker. I didn't quite buy the portrayal either, to be honest, but his plot was one of the more intriguing parts of the movie so oh well.

I think a lot of the haters online ARE bigots and are quite open about it. "SJWs ruined Star Wars!" and random bitching about there being too many women and non-white characters. But I can also see how the writing wasn't necessarily extraordinary and if you didn't like how the plot progressed, you definitely would not be a fan of the film.

But the new Star Wars is not "under-performing".

Re: Unpopular opinions

(Anonymous) 2017-12-23 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I really don't understand what issues people have with it, outside of the bigoted stuff.

It's a little too long, and I can see some people saying that it dragged in parts, but I think the same was true of TFA. I just don't fundamentally understand what else people want out of a Star Wars movie.

Re: Unpopular opinions

[personal profile] philstar22 2017-12-23 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
This. It was possibly a little long, but I didn't mind because I loved it all. Most of the hate I've seen is coming from people who hate the idea of Kylo/Rey, which wasn't even in the movie. Too much reading into things and making assumptions and then basing their hate off that.

Re: Unpopular opinions

(Anonymous) 2017-12-23 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate the idea of Kylo/Rey and I still loved it

possibly in part because I don't think it was nearly as positive about their relationship as the triumphalist shippers made it out to be

Right, I expected way more of that ship but they just had a conversation once or twice and he talked some shit.

Re: Unpopular opinions

(Anonymous) 2017-12-23 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess some people didn't like some of the twists, like Rey's parents and what happened to Snoke. I actually thought both were fantastic because they were unexpected and ultimately more meaningful. That plus Luke not being a wise badass Jedi sage.

But yeah, all Star Wars films are long, none have great writing. I think plot-wise, this one did drag on a few unnecessary bits, and it was a little frustrating watching different plotlines about failure after failure, but hey, that was the theme of the film.

I think compared to TFA, it was more unique, less formulaic, and ultimately progresses things forward better. The only thing I dread for the next film is the elephant in the room - it was supposed to be Leia's film, but with Carrie gone...

Re: Unpopular opinions

Every single bit of setup in TFA about Rey got swept under the rug in a very very unsatisfactory way. That's one issue.

Luke Skywalker, Mr. "I won't kill my father" just up and letting fear consume him to the point that he nearly killed his nephew, is another.

The fact that Kylo let that one moment be what made him SLAUGHTER his classmates, is also another.

The whole casino bit and how Finn was reduced to side kick to a secondary character instead of BEING THE MALE LEAD like he's supposed to be, in one more.

I didn't mind Luke, but I also don't have forty years of idealized canon in my head.

& Reddit has, unsurprisingly, been pretty bad about it. I truly had someone tell me "I don't care if they're black white indian or whatever but it was FORCED DIVERSITY!!!."

and yet no one can tell me how it's """"forced""", oddly enough.

Re: Unpopular opinions

(Anonymous) 2017-12-23 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. Like, is there any form of diversity that people wouldn't call forced? It's a criticism that's equally applicable to any diversity whatsoever. So the complaint really reduces down to just being opposed to diversity as such.

That's a constant theme whenever you have majority female or non-white leads. It's "forced, in your face, SJW-points diversity".

But when it's all white dudes, it's just natural.

Re: Unpopular opinions

(Anonymous) 2017-12-23 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I hope everyone else there was at least able to milk some "May the Force(d Diversity) be with you" jokes out of that.

I didn't *like* where they went with Luke's character, but I didn't find it particularly OOC, either. He was always a bit of a smartass, and no one does jaded better than a disappointed idealist.

YUP.

I had a co-worker from my sister team come up to me last night, some one I don't really talk to often and he told me he hated it.

Actually, his exact words were "Between you and me? Star Wars can go to hell." He was PISSED.

In the same vein, I can't stand how a lot of people pretend that there are no valid points of ciriticism for the movie and everyone who doesn't like it is just some dumb angry nerd whose headcanon or ship didn't come true. Especially if they also go all condescending "Well you just didn't GET it" on anyone who didn't like it/aspects of it.
It was not very well written in a lot of parts. There were some serious problems in logic, pacing, character development and continuity. I didn't hate it, but it also could have been so much better.
