It's terrible to say but, I'm getting so exhausted with all these things that are Bad To Like (TM) or Mean Something Bad About You (tm).

I don't want to go back into total ignorance but.. I want to get past this "Baby's First Fandom Social Awareness"stage and take back nuance and shades of gray. I'm tired of people being "godly" or "trash" .

SA

That said if this IS true that the creator has nazi sympathiser beliefs that would be horrible and I would wonder a little about if the fans KNOW but... I don't know shit about that because SNK is really not my type of anime/manga

Relatedly, I believe he's a Japanese WW2 revisionist, who are of the ilk who think what Imperial Japan did to Korea and China ~wasn't that bad~

STOP WITH THE TRADEMARK SYMBOLS!!!!!!

(Anonymous) 2017-12-24 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
why does this bother you so much

AYRT

I'm doing it sarcastically to indicate an annoying trend in fandom. Is that not how they're meant to be used?

"take back nuance and shades of gray."

Oh this, so so much.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-24 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I get where you're coming from, but I also think you have to evaluate things like that on their own terms. And I'm not personally familiar with the fandom, so I don't know if there's any validity to the argument. But I'm not comfortable concluding that things like this are, in general, hollow moral justifications with no validity based solely on the fact that they're annoying.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-24 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I think this is an...odd...example to pick. There's some pretty serious reasons listed why they have a problem with the work, it's not something pedantic

(Anonymous) 2017-12-24 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Because they are preachy about it. They want to ruin a popular series other enjoy or make them feel bad about it. It's not their choice to make. If others have a problem they can drop it of their no accord, not be shamed into it by random slacktivist on the internet.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-24 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
So - I'm genuinely trying to understand your views here - your problem isn't with the critique they're making, but with the part where they say "and therefore people shouldn't like it"?

Except in this particular case, I feel that is something I would want to know? I watch shows that are problematic and that's fine. But I wouldn't want to support a creator like this if what those people are saying is true.

For me, there is a difference in lecturing about problematic aspects in works vs problematic things about the creator. People can see what is in a work and decide if it is something they want to support. But it is something else to give information about problematic things behind the scenes, as not everyone is privy to that information and it might make a difference to them.

This is the source linked for the Attack on Titan author believing in eugenics: https://seldomusings.wordpress.com/2013/10/19/migiteorerno/ I skimmed it, and I didn’t see anything in there confirming that the author believes in eugenics.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-24 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
"Eugenics" is strong, but it does seem to support the thrust of all the previous posts in the thread in re revionist history and denialism of the legacy of Japanese imperialism and war crimes.

There are so many exaggerations and outright false claims about authors' problematic views on Tumblr that I don't even need to see a source to not believe what they say. Someone read too much into a mediocre shonen manga or something the author said, okay, got it.

By now I think the best you can do in these cases is ignore and just make your own research to form your own opinions.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-24 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I am a fan of Attack on Titan and there a few things that I have side-eyed regarding, but the series itself is actually anti-war.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-24 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
The articles in question seem to engage with that point, though

(Anonymous) 2017-12-26 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
What things would those be?

(Anonymous) 2017-12-25 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
How is the series "Nazi propaganda"? I mean sure it's got a lot of blonds with blue eyes but that's about it. I doubt they would have a heroine who's specifically Asian or have a great deal of the point being about people banding together to defeat a foe that attacks them regardless of their differences if it was some sort of Nazi support.

Is this because it takes place in Germany?

(Anonymous) 2017-12-25 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
i suspect that the poster is using Nazi in the loose, slightly colloquial sense of expansionist militant fascist. which is a reasonably common usage, even if slightly imprecise, and it's especially reasonable if you're talking about Imperial Japan which obviously were allies of the Third Reich.

from what i remember about hetalia, it was pretty clear about germany hating hitler, though? so they're kind of automatically dulling their point by referencing that series.

yeah, the world full of shits. So, what.....

(Anonymous) 2017-12-25 04:37 pm (UTC)(link)
this just give me a head nod.

look, if you lose interest, that's fine by me. is not like the world gonna scorned itself to ashes. you can go full cycle or bet to see the common ground, right?

These are the exact people that make social justice look like a sick joke. What's justified about backhanded manipulation and guilt tripping to get people to see things your way?
