One of my favorite published authors wrote Reylo fic

(Anonymous) 2017-12-29 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
... and it’s creeping me out a bit because I can’t stand Reylo. I’m hardly gonna stop reading or reccing their published stuff, but still. ... They’re also an accomplished visual artist, I guess I should be glad that so far as I know they haven’t been making NC-17 Reylo fanart.

Have you ever found out that a creator or author you like ships your NOTP?

Why would it creep you out that someone has a variety of interests and tastes?

AYRT—It doesn’t, but Reylo creeps me out, so finding out someone whose published work I have recc’ed all over the place ships a pairing that makes my skin crawl gives me pause. I’m not going to message them saying I loathe something they ship, or bug them. It’s kind of a fluke that I even know the name they write fic under, since I used to follow them for their art when they were a struggling artist and now they’ve won awards and published something like 20 books. I’ve liked all the original stuff they’ve written so far.

IDGI

It's just a ship.

Just want to say I 100% know where you're coming from with this. Sometimes something is just so off-putting to you that when someone you respect a lot likes that thing, it's jarring and kind of upsetting. As long as you're not harassing them about it (which you've made clear you're not) I think it's totally normal to feel the way you do.

I know how you feel. One of the KakaSaku biggies in fandom on Tumblr ships Reylo. I had to unfollow them.

They HATE SasuSaku...but they ship Reylo? What kind of sense does that make?!

I don't follow any of my favorite authors, so I have no idea what they ship, but I'm almost certain Rainbow Rowell ships Drarry.

My NOTP is the biggest pairing in the fandom so pretty much all the authors I like ship it. It's a bit annoying when it pops up in the background but most of the authors stick to the pairing I want to read about and I try to ignore the NOTP as best I can or take a break when I'm really sick of them.

Same, nonny. I've gotten to where in genfic I ctrl-f for the most common fanon pet names to see if they've snuck my NOTP in the background.

Re: One of my favorite published authors wrote Reylo fic

(Anonymous) 2017-12-29 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but it doesn't bother me. It's easy enough to filter out what I don't like/unfollow them and doesn't change how I feel about the stuff I do like.

Is your primary fandom like, My Little Pony, that Reylo is at all a "creepy" ship? Kids these days, sheesh. Someone ships a ship you don't like, and that "creeps you out?"

ikr? I haven't seen any of the Star Wars films, but idg how Reylo is somehow worse than any other villain ship like Aeris/Sephiroth, Ginny or Harry/Tom Riddle, etc. Shipping the main protagonist with the main villain is pretty much a time-honored fandom tradition.

No kidding. Hero/villain ships have forever been a thing, and I'm having enormous trouble figuring out what makes Reylo more ~problematic~ than the age-old fandom fare. Is this like, baby's first bad boy ship.

People can be creeped out by all kinds of things. Maybe something about their specific dynamic, beyond the hero/villain thing, is especially creepy to this person.

And I'm sure there's some screwed up shipping the My Little Pony fandom.

DA: Yeah I don't get why some people are so confused about a fan being squicked out that one of their favorite authors ships a NOTP of theirs. It's a squick. There's lots of reasons for people to get squicked out about certain pairings. Hell, OP doesn't even need a reason. Sometimes shit just squicks you out.

Re: One of my favorite published authors wrote Reylo fic

(Anonymous) 2017-12-29 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT—I ship some fucked up shit myself, but Reylo hit a lot of my squicks—genocidal maniac/person fighting genocidal maniac is one, and that whole screed about “you’re nothing, but not to me,” is another. I will never mention that I dislike one of their ships to this author, or for that matter directly to any Reylo fan. But I will vent here occasionally.

Are we really getting angry at people for having NOTPs now?

OP didn't even say anything about the writer or the pairing, just that Reylo is their NOTP

DA

IKR? For all the people who complain about pearl-clutchers on tumblr, there are some people who will reply with a quick “Well, wwhhyyyy does it bother you?”

I don’t know, maybe because it just DOES? Like some people here forget the stuff they preach about how we should be able to like/dislike whatever we want without rhyme or reason.

Re: One of my favorite published authors wrote Reylo fic

(Anonymous) 2017-12-29 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
Wait, you are white knighting someone for having a NOTP... when that someone is throwing an author under the bus for daring to like the pairing she doesn't? How are you missing this? no one cares if you don't like Reylo, but it is weird to be "creeped out" that someone else does.

Re: One of my favorite published authors wrote Reylo fic

(Anonymous) 2017-12-29 02:48 pm (UTC)(link)
OP of thread here and now I’m imagining what the author in question would do with MLP, which modern incarnations I know jack shit about... I’m kind of horrified just picturing the possible results. ... wait. This author did do some custom MLP mods at one point. They were cool, but not exactly cute. So far as I know they’ve never written MLP fic, though.

As to my primary fandoms, one of the other reasons I dislike Reylo more than is reasonable is that normally I’m all about hero/villain ships to the extent that two of my primary ships could be described as Stockholm Syndrome, mainly because if the plot could be described as Beauty and the Beast I usually end up shipping it.

But Kylo’s particular combo of horrifying and annoying precludes my shipping him with anyone. Okay, not quite anyone. I can kind of ship him with Hux in a “make each other miserable before being pushed out an airlock” way, but I have no desire to read fic about it. I just find them both similar levels of obnoxious and reprehensible.

All the time. Unless it the author's stuff goes into character bashing territory, I just read everything else I like, and avoid the NOTP fic.

Re: One of my favorite published authors wrote Reylo fic

(Anonymous) 2017-12-29 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
I will never get what all the hubbub is about Reylo that makes it more bad or dangerous than any other villain/hero ship, at least based on actual confirmed canon.

I can think of soooooo many more wildly popular hero/villain ships with more canon issues about them than this one has. It's just an honestly generic badguy/herione ship with some fans and a bunch of people acting like its the worst thing to ever exist.

why does a NOTP have to be logical now?

I don't like Reylo and I generally like a lot of hero/villain ships. Most of my dislike is from the exposure the ship has had everywhere. You can't talk about TLJ without Reylo being mentioned. There are a lot of Youtube reviewers who are into it and gush about it. If you search for it on the news section in google, a significant amount of articles have been written about it saying it's the best/most realistic romance in Star Wars ever which I don't see, since I never got anything romantic out of their interactions. Mostly didn't see how it was a canon ship when Rey did not seem into him at all.

Perhaps the extra exposure is what is getting people. Also I think there is a tendency to victimize Kylo Ren and people either love his character or hate him. It's possible having a character who has created such division among fans be put with one of the fan favorites is a big chunk of the problem as well.

Mostly, I avoid the fandom though, because my main reason for not shipping Reylo is I just don't see it. I do think it has abusive aspects to it but I think that you can get around that stuff using fanfiction. I certainly have. Also the anti-Reylos are, in general, anti-TLJ and I find some of their reasons to be a bit ridiculous tbh.
