Star Wars

Have you seen TLJ? Did you see it spoiled or unspoiled (and how much did it matter to you)? Did you enjoy the movie?

Re: Star Wars

I saw it entirely unspoiled (unless Rose existing is a spoiler). I avoided spoilers beforehand because I hadn't with TFA or any of the prequel movies back in the day, and I wanted to see what it would be like to watch a Star Wars movie unspoiled for once. I loved it! I had fun throughout almost all the different parts and I'd even see it again in the theater, so I don't think not being spoiled made a difference in how much I liked it.

Mostly unspoiled. Spoilers don't matter to me that much, and yes, I enjoyed the movie.

I saw it spoiled. I love spoilers. And I loved the movie. 4th favorite SW movie for me.

I saw it opening night in the UK so I was unspoiled and also hadn't heard any bad reviews. I enjoyed parts but was pretty disappointed overall. That probably would have turned into eventual hatred but the backlash was so severe and in a lot of cases so OTT that it softened me towards the film. I may go see it again but maybe not. I have an annual pass for the cinema so it's free to go, I'm just not sure that's how I want to spend an afternoon.

Re: Star Wars

(Anonymous) 2018-01-04 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I went in completely spoiled, which I think saved some parts of the movie. I always look at spoilers because I enjoy a movie more that way. However, in this case, I was disappointed. It didn't hit me right away but as I've thought about it more and more, it just felt so underwhelming. I'm still willing to see the next one to see if it can fix some of the issues I have but I'm also resigned that the sequel trilogy is pretty much a bust, which is sad because I really love Star Wars.

However, I am loving a lot of the EU content that's come out so I'm not writing off the whole fandom.

I saw it mostly unspoiled (although I don't think it would have mattered much) and I absolutely loved it.

Was unspoiled for all of it since I don't really follow anyone that posts about it much and enjoyed it, but I'm also not a huge Star Wars fan so they can pretty much do anything and I'll just be like 'cool' to it.

Liked the new characters, liked seeing more of Finn and Rey, looking forward to see where it finishes off.

I saw it unspoiled, and I think it was a lot better than TFA, but ultimately I'm not in love. I think that they should have made the primary focus of the movie be the storyline with Luke, Kylo Ren, and Rey and fleshed that out more, instead of half-assing those other storylines.

Re: Star Wars

(Anonymous) 2018-01-05 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
I think I'm almost on the same page as you. I loved Rose and Finn's storyline, mostly because they had great chemistry and Rose is awesome (and also BB8), but it should have been edited down a lot. The "Poe is a dumbass" plotline could have been scrapped. But I did think it was a lot better than TFA (and TFA isn't a bad movie, just kind of hollow under the nostalgia.)

here be spoiler territory

[personal profile] ketita 2018-01-05 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Omg, I was so pissed at the "Poe is a dumbass" storyline. He basically singlehandedly set the deaths of THE ENTIRE REBELLION in motion, and all he gets is an indulgent "oh, that flyboy"? Really? Poe fucked up big time. Massive time. I think they really needed to lower the death count on this if they wanted me to accept it as just a blunder.

I loved Rose! She was my happy surprise for the film. I thought she was great, and fun, and it's a shame that her and Finn's storyline ended up being basically pointless filler.

nayrt

Maybe I need to see it again, but how did he fuck up that caused everyone to die? It wasn't his fault the First Order could track them in hyperspace. The reason he tried to mutiny was down to the senior officers not telling him (or anyone else, apparently) their plan to use the escape pods and why that would work, with no explanation for why they couldn't just tell him when he first started getting agitated. Was the fact that the First Order still destroyed some of the escape pods down to Poe somehow?

Re: Star Wars

(Anonymous) 2018-01-05 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
I saw it unspoiled, which was easy since I'm not in the fandom, but I had to wait over a week after the premiere, so I was well aware of how it was apparently "divisive" and some people were being all "ruined my childhood! etc." It was making me wonder if a certain character dies - they do, although not in a way I'd expected (not that I had any particular ideas in mind).

I don't think my unspoiled status mattered all that much, because I was mostly meh about it. Nothing in the plot made me angry or disappointed, but I thought it was too long and dragged in a number of spots. It also felt like it had more endings than Return of the King - they kept coming to a good spot to end on a semi-cliffhanger like in Empire, but then the movie keeps going. At one point I thought the movie was about to end, and then I realized there was a whole bunch of stuff from the trailer we still hadn't seen yet. Dammit.

I was totally spoiled for everything, because that's usually how I roll.

I liked some things about it, and disliked others. For example, I think they did a disservice to Finn and Rose and could have better fleshed out their arc.

I'm really getting a kick out of people calling the film racist and sexist (and homophobic and queer-baiting apparently?), though, especially since a lot of their arguments seem to rely on anger at shippers and exaggerations of character behaviors.

Re: Star Wars

The only thing I was vaguely spoiled for was that there was stuff in it that was causing even some people who hated Reylo to start shipping Reylo.

I liked it quite a lot. More than TFA, and I liked TFA fairly well. I can understand how diehard fans of the original trilogy might not like it (even without bringing sexism and/or racism into it), and there were a lot of plot holes, but I don't care overly much. I like the characters, and I really like how well the movie managed to deconstruct a lot of the expected tropes.

Yes, unspoiled, no.

Absolutely loved it. I'm usually not into spoilers, but I had been following spoiler blogs until the world premiere. So I got some spoilers, but not the major beats of the movie.

Spoiled the hell out of myself because tickets are too expensive to watch something I'd be tempted to walk out of.
Wasn't a fan. Didn't completely hate it either though. I think there is a lot of very very bad writing in there. I also hate cringe humour so that was another factor. And it annoys me all the more because the film actually had lots of potential that was killed by shitty writing and dumb jokes in favour of character development.

Re: Star Wars

(Anonymous) 2018-01-05 06:11 pm (UTC)(link)
The best thing the sequel movies have going for them is that the prequel movies were so god-awful that most fans will settle for an okay movie at this point. And TLJ was okay. It was pretty. There were good action sequences and some heartfelt moments. No one was horribly OOC. The characters that were supposed to have chemistry had it. It even did a better job than TFA in a few things, like making Kylo Ren seem like someone who might actually be a credible threat instead of someone who'd probably have accidentally cut himself in half with his lightsaber years ago throwing a tantrum because someone ate his hot pockets. Is it going to make anyone's "Best Movie of the Year" list? Probably not. But it was okay, and that's enough for some people.

Re: Star Wars

I disagree in some parts.
First of all, one of my main issues was that, while Kylo was at least a bit more threatening than in TFA (although not by much, imo), absolutely NOBODY ELSE on the evil side was. It was all a mess of icompetent bumbling morons who seemed more at home in an Austin Powers movie. It was annoying as hell.
And I think that quite a few people were immensely OOC. Mostly because - and that was my other main issue - a lot of scenes were done with a dumb joke or quip in mind instead of how the actual characters should be acting. It was all very "let's make an Avengers movie full of snarky one-liners and silly jokes and worry about the plot later, if at all".
It had some good action sequences. It also had some heartfelt moments. But on the other hand, it had some hilariously dumb plotholes and new characters that in some regards were okay but in others added nothing of value to the plot.

Re: Star Wars

The second hand embarassment type. Like awkward scenes that get dragged out too long or exist at all (like Poe's "prank call", the "shirtless Kylo" scene, Rey destroying the stuff of those nun-creatures, the "drinking milk from the teats of aliens" scene etc.). I'll be the first one to admit I'm a bit oversensitive when it comes to those things, but that's why I was not particularly well entertained in quite a few secenes.
