Well, I don't personally agree, and I don't really see what makes Dominic West intrinsically more interesting than Alicia Vikander, but different strokes for different folks

Ok, another Tomb Raider secret, another occasion where I am compelled to rant about how much I do not care for nu!lara.

They turned her into someone I can no-longer hero worship. I disapprove. Old school Lara is best Lara

(Anonymous) 2018-01-21 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
why don't you make a secret about it
thewakokid: (Default)

[personal profile] thewakokid 2018-01-21 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
'Cause then I'd have to respond to that secret to rant about how much I do not care for nu!lara. It'd be a viscous cycle.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-21 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
But then it'd be on topic, and people would see it and, like, talk about it
thewakokid: (Default)

[personal profile] thewakokid 2018-01-21 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Meh, people know my feeling on it. I am always giving people a chance to talk about it. A secret is unnecessary.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-21 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
It would allow you to actually explain what you hate about it in detail

also, it's always good to increase the number of actual secrets

What does nu!Lara mean? Is nu!lara Vikander's Lara? Or is nu!lara defined by something to do with the video games?

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2018-01-21 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Video game reboot and origin story. The movie poster photo is done almost identically to the reboot box art.

Yeah, and the movie is using the same story and aesthetic. Vikander might spend less time gasiping and sobbing about how she's "Got to do it", but I'm not super hopeful.

[personal profile] thewakokid 2018-01-21 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Both. Nu!lara is from the 2nd reboot in the games (or the 2nd REEEEEEEEEEEE!boot as I tend to think of it) It's when Lara Croft stopped being Indianna Jones, and started being a character from the SAW movies.

I don't love the change. There's a lot of stupid shit the devs came up to justify it. I hate it. I hate it so much.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-21 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, okay. Because I don't know the games at all, I couldn't tell if you were just shitting on Vikander's Lara because you decided purely from the trailers that you hate Vikander as Lara, or if you had more of a reason than that. But it sounds like you do have more of a reason than that. I can't really say whether I agree with you about the changes in the game, since obviously I know none of the particulars of that. Maybe I'll see if I can wiki it or something.

Oh, Vikander is just about the only choice for the role that I could see working today. I hate the direction the character has been taken in. "We know people never relate to Lara Croft as a hero, so we've put her in dangerous situations, and made her wimper much more so people feel more like protecting her"

I'm paraphrasing quite heavily, but that was the general ethos they've stated to be going for.

Personally, I think you need to show your heroes scared and hurt in order to ground their strength in reality and make it feel genuine. The characters I will always respect the most are characters who push back against their own terror. And I feel that way about male heroes too. Which is a big part of why so many male heroes are boring to me - because we don't see them scared, almost ever.

Personally, I'm very excited for the new Tomb Raider movie, and Vikander is entirely the reason for that. I had zero interest until I watched the trailer. She's gorgeous but she doesn't feel like eye-candy, and she's a total bamf without feeling completely OTT and larger than life.

I never would've pictured Vikander in the role, but now she's the only person I want to picture in the role - at least until the movie comes out and we see how it is.

Vikander is a plus, but "total bamf* without feeling completely OTT and larger than life" is not Lara Croft. It's like, would you watch an indianna jones movie where he wasn't OTT and larger than life?

*Disagree on this point too

(Anonymous) 2018-01-21 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
would you watch an indianna jones movie where he wasn't OTT and larger than life?

yes

it was called "all of the Indiana Jones movies"

Seriously? My gods, what is your life like?!

(Anonymous) 2018-01-22 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Did we watch different movies or did you lead a MUCH more exciting life than me?

(Anonymous) 2018-01-22 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
His adventures are OTT and larger than life, sure, but Indiana Jones the character isn't really a superhero. He's a fallible, vulnerable human being who happens to be smart, clever, and daring.

Who beats Nazi soldiers single highhandedly, Willingly jumps from moving trucks, finds the hole grail, beats deathtraps and never loses his hat while doing it? He's the smartest person in the room, the toughest person in the room, is a master archaeologist, ladies man, crack shot and expert witha bullwhip? No. Come on. The guys an over the top power fantasy. Not complaining, I love it, I just don't think there any stretch where you can say he's just your average joe. Guy is larger than life by design.

Um, yes? Yes, that sounds like something that would interest me greatly. As would James Bond movies that were less larger-than-life. That's why Casino Royal is the only Bond movie I genuinely like. Because it felt the closest to real.

And as for Vikander not seeming like a total bamf in the trailers - what trailers did YOU watch? Because in the trailers I watched, she did about thirty badass things in the span of two minutes, and Vikander is shredded enough that her badassery actually looked kind of believable.
thewakokid: (Default)

[personal profile] thewakokid 2018-01-21 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, she looks fine, but she did spend a lot of the trailer either captive, or running for her life. Sure, she ran for her life like a boss, but, what, she fired like one arrow? (And she held the bow kinda awkwardly at that. Jason Bourne she was not.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-21 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
It's really weird to me that you seem to think offensive violence is the only way to be a bamf.

If anything, I would say surviving brutal danger with extreme efficacy is a more bamfy behavior than most offensive violence. Though I did also really enjoy her extremely badass use of that ice-pick type thing to take out the dude with a rifle.
