Re: Is there anything "good on the internet, these days?"

I've come to see that twitter is the place you go to get into fights about politics with strangers, tumblr is the place you go to get into fights about fandom with strangers, and dreamwidth is the place you go to complain about it all... and probably get into another fight about either, with an anon.

(As far as I can tell, Facebook seems to be about sharing click bait with relatives and people you haven't spoken to in half a decade, and Instagram is for being jealous of celebrities.)

I'm pretty annoyed at this artist a friend and I commissioned back in... June or July I think? Definitely half a year ago, anyway. She is (or at least was before going inactive) a BNF in a popular fandom and got quite a few commisions because her art style is nice and she did have a fairly high output at the time. She'd occasionally hinted at some mental health issues but not that often. Then, shortly after closing her commission spots, she went completely silent on tumblr. She was still posting a lot on twitter, but it was a constant mix of selfies, pictures of outings with her friends and a lot of mental health whining (at least as much as I can tell, she only tweets in her native language). She spent all the money she got from those commissions on several things but completely stopped posting any art. Then, she recently moved and started asking for more money, opened commissions again and created a patreon where the rewards are valuable things like "virtual hugs" (that's not what patreon is for damn it, get a kofi account if you want free donations!).

Now, I'm generally a patient person and I completely understand if mental health messes with your life. But the huge problem I have with this is the lack of communication on her part. The first few months, she went completely silent and only started posting very short, general notices some time ago. The only bigger post she made was the one where she explained her situation , including the reopened commissions and patreon announcement. She keeps saying that she's still working on the commissions, but quite frankly, I almost believe she hasn't started a single one of them. And opening additional slots when not one of the old ones is done ... yeah not a great idea.
I mean, I get it, she needed money. But her prices aren't cheap and the people who paid her for this probably don't exactly swim in cash themselves. And Idon't want to ask her because I don't want to be the one mean person who gets blamed for pressuring the poor mentally ill artist or something.

But damn it, it's been over half a year and not a single personal status update. That's just frustrating.

AYRT - Nice try, love, but your strawman is in another castle.
Maybe try "Silly OP for blaming the audience, rather than considering the possibility their fiction just wasn't very good".

Bit sad only got one response for the movie thread. So the next one will probably be the last one I do. Considering this one was available for free on Youtube access to the movies isn't the problem. There just isn't any interest in it.

He was a good war leader, and he was genuinely better than most of the other conservatives of the time. but in general, I would say that he was pretty bad throughout his career and that the war (and the build-up to war) was the only part where he was really good.

I mean, it's certainly possible that this was intended, but afaik it's still fanon that hasn't been addressed by JKR or anyone else except slashers

Aw. I'm sorry. I honestly haven't had time. A few of the past months I haven't liked the movies. But this month I really was planning on watching. I might have time tomorrow, though.

I can't speak for the 90s but my mother was in college in the 80s and from what she's told me about it, there were most definitely some major differences in student culture. A lot of times, I don't think our generation which has grown up with the internet and social media etc really gets just how much those things have shaped student culture in the modern day.

Can I have some examples of what stories this secret is referring to? Somebody mentioned X-Men, but I never really paid attention to any of the other mutants beyond the main cast like Cyclops, Beast, Storm, etc., which doesn't really feel like it meets the child soldiers bit.

Maybe Sailor Moon? JRPGs that usually have teen characters? OP, pls halp.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-29 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
No, I just think you're an idiot.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-29 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
"And don't get me started on the people who cry 'queerbait' because their pet ship isn't canon when the canon in question has actual LGBT characters and pairs in it, that shit is fucking infuriating and transparent as hell"

This sounds HILARIOUSLY terrible, which fandom is doing this?

Re: DA

but the only way it doesn't make a difference is if you don't read anything that's AU.

That's your opinion, sure.

I read a metric fuckton of AU, and IMO it really doesn't matter whether your College AU is set in 1990 or 2018. Either way, it requires the exact same acceptance that, "Yo, this is not meant to be canon compliant."

Now if you want to add in, say, Vampires, then that requires an addition level of acceptance that, "Hey, so there's shit in this universe that doesn't exist in the real world." Or, if you want to set your fic in the 19th century, then sure, that adds in the additional level of acceptance that "this fic is going to be set in the past and things are gonna get historical up in here."

Re: Wedding craziness

(Anonymous) 2018-01-29 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
I will say keeping a wedding even under 10k can be difficult, because weddings tend to have a lot of hidden expenses - and the best ways to keep that cost down is to have a small wedding with less guests, which can be hard depending on family sizes/closeness.

THAT SAID op in the linked post is relying almost entirely on gifted money? Which is just so... weird. And kinda entitled. the mother is being a bitch though.

Bravo. Amazing sum up of it all. I loled.

"she said in an interview that fantasy and sexual and/or romantic writing were incompatible"

has she, like

read any adult fantasy novels

like, literally ANY

because at least half of the ones I've read have had sex scenes, sometimes a LOT of sex scenes

this sounds more like a her problem tbh

Although I will grant that she was writing books that she knew kids were reading, so I can see where she would want to keep it toned down for her younger readers

(Anonymous) 2018-01-29 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Lacking the good opinion of someone who equates a difference in media preferences with being oppressed by the fandom police stings a lot less than you might imagine.

I just listened to my coworker gripe for 20 minutes about the son who won't do his homework and I really had to hire my tongue to keep from saying "then put your fucking foot down!" She lets him walk all over because she doesn't want him to see that she's mad because then "he wins" but he's winning right now by not being made to do anything.

*bite not hire

(Anonymous) 2018-01-29 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, but how many of those fandoms criticized for queerbaiting have "actual LGBT characters" who play more than a supporting role in canon?

Re: Vent Thread

I'm sorry it didn't work out better. I'd been on fs hiatus for a while else I might have participated more.

Re: Is there anything "good on the internet, these days?"

(Anonymous) 2018-01-29 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Actual Purity Culture = the batshit evangelical "Girls, be a perfect pure virgin who never even thinks about sex or you're WORTHLESS IRREDEEMABLE TRASH who will NEVER MARRY because GOOD MEN ONLY WANT VIRGINS" claptrap. I'm very familiar with that because I grew up in it. People have co-opted the term in fandom to mean fans who think that writing characters having sex is eeevil and ruins their wholesomeness, even if they're crazy violent characters who are strongly implied to have sex in-canon.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-29 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think AYRT was arguing that college in the 80s isn't any different to college now. I think they were saying that a college AU is a college AU. Why would it being set in the present be an issue? Why would the reader expect an AU to be canon adherent about what era it's set it, when the whole thing about AUs is that they're NOT canon adherent.

If it's not your thing it's not your thing, and that's cool. I just don't think the specific criticism of modern-day college AUs for not being canon adherent makes sense in this context.

We spent almost that much. But not on dresses or hair or cars or any of the big ticket items. We hired somewhere for the weekend and had everyone we loved there for essentially a massive holiday/sleep over/party. It was the best day of our lives for sure and I have no regrets in spending as much as we did because to be married and celebrate with everyone I hold dear was just wonderful. Ninety friends and family and talking and dancing and singing. :) :) :)

On my death bed I certainly won't be mourning the money.

ayrt - yeah, I'm not actually saying it was bad, I didn't mind the approach myself even if it made Harry/Ginny feel tacked-on. You really can't give the MC an off-screen romance. But I think this off-screen treatment is why people don't feel invested in any of the relationships the way they are in other books where the romance is significantly more than a sub-plot.
