For the record, I'm not making fun of the revulsion and disgust you feel when you realize that someone you knew all your life isn't the person you knew. Those are valid feelings.

I'm just amazed at how quick to disown offspring some people are when they find out their kid (whatever the age) did something awful. You know, instead of contemplating the possibility that, at some point, they might have failed him in his childhood. Instead of wondering how they missed the signs over 18 years of his upbringing, and what they can do to avoid a similar situation in the future. This kind of shit doesn't happen in a vacuum, and there is no kiddy diddler gene that lies dormant in a person for years to suddenly awaken one day. Fortunately, anon I originally replied to has only presented a hypothetical situation and hasn't actually bred any child molesters to my knowledge.

Some people feel more empathy towards abused children and their families than towards the family of one of the pedophiles that abused them. Your priorities obviously skew differently.

I don't have health insurance. I am currently technically unemployed, but get some money making crafts and doing odd jobs. I tried signing up for Medicaid, but was told that I do not qualify because I am not pregnant.
I've been going to a local sliding scale clinic. I had an appointment yesterday. The doctor I had been seeing left the practice, so I had a new doctor. I was describing what has been going on and the doctor said that I might have MS. He is going to see if I qualify for any assistance with getting a MRI or another test done. After reading up on it, it really sounds like I have it.

I'm just glad he can't hurt anybody else.

Uh, no. There's a difference between feeling more empathy for the victims vs the family of the pedophile, and just flat out saying the family doesn't deserve any empathy at all.

my brother and I were decently close as kids. super normal upbringing. he got bullied but he had tons of support at home.

he raped a seven year old at a summer camp. i'd kill him myself if i wouldn't be jailed for life for it. he's not my family anymore. there was absolutely a kiddy diddler that just awoke in him one day. he even said "he just wondered what it was like." no remorse. nothing. he's trash and i hate him.

Ok, this is interesting. I have never known how a woman is supposed to tell she's horny. I've always thought of it as being obvious for guys (has an erection=horny) but kind of confused when it comes to women.

I mean, there are times where I mentally think "I would really like to have an orgasm right now" but was never sure if that counted or not? Honestly, I don't know if I've ever been "physically aroused", I wouldn't even know how to tell. I mean, I know people mention "being wet" but ummm...sorry if this is too TMI, but when that happens I'm pretty much never in that "must have orgasm" mental state.

I don't know if I'm just abnormal in this regard or what.

But speaking of wrong, I do think there is something wrong with the statement "I'll be sure not to say how little I care that he killed himself in front of his family." You are perfectly content with the misery of people who did not participate in the crimes, and cared about the guy who did. It's entirely possible to be disgusted by someone's actions and still care about them. If you don't see that, then I have nothing else to say.

But I highly doubt your brother just decided one day he wanted to rape kids. Saying he wondered what it was like implies he'd been contemplating it for a while. And while you found your upbringing to be super normal, I'm going to go out on a limb here, and guess it was a little different for your brother.

I'm not sure that I'm buying the "can't get medicaid if you're not pregnant" thing. I'm not doubting that they told you that, I'm just not sure that's entirely legal. What state are you in? If you can get health insurance, MS is actually fairly treatable these days. If you're not eligible for medicare or a low-cost state plan, you might need to start looking for a crappy job with a healthcare benefit.

Why does one person saying they, personally, feel no empathy in this one situation mean that the family doesn't deserve empathy?

Um... not all abusers were abused themselves. That is a myth. Some people, as scary as it is, just end up being evil. Some people are sociopaths or pedophiles, and were never abused. Its not comforting, but its true.

Regardless, while other's safety should always be the top priority, reducing terrible events to they're just sociopaths/pedos so they're irredeemable isn't looking for long term solution for these issues and ignores that people under the right circumstances are capable of despicable actions.

Anon with the rapist grandpa, but thank fuck not the rapist brother, here... it doesn’t fucking matter if child rapists were raped. Hell, my mom’s one surviving brother is pretty sure the reason his dad turned out a rapist was because his scout leader raped him when he was 12. But none of my grandfather’s children became rapists. My mom wasn’t perfect by a long shot and neither were her brothers, but I’ll save my empathy for people like them; victims who were abused by a monster, but refused to become monsters in turn. Rape victims lose my sympathy if they become rapists. Sorry that upsets you.

Uh. I’m not currently suicidal, but I have been. And, well, no. I actually used to argue myself, as well as friends and family who have wrestled with suicidal thoughts, out of beating themselves up quite so badly by saying “look, whatever fucked up shit your brain’s telling you right now, at least you haven’t eaten a puppy sandwich or lured kids into a panel van, so you can’t be as evil as you think you are.” I’ve seen people post that they’re suicidal on FS before and honestly if you want to help suicidal people on FS, engage those people in conversation and distract them with silly jokes. Don’t defend pedophiles. I had two family members commit suicide because they were raped by one so your reasoning rings really hollow.

No, if ari is in a state with a Republican legislature and/or governor, then the state probably refused the Obamacare Medicaid expansion. Before Obamacare kicked in, the only way to get Medicaid coverage if you were a woman who wasn’t disabled was to have breast cancer, be pregnant, or have children under five. In many Republican-controlled states, that’s still the case, because fuck the poor.
