Gonna go out on a limb here and say it probably wasn't his FAMILY's fault he was collecting child porn. Being vengeful towards them strikes me as both stupid and cruel.

I'm sorry but if his family wasn't disgusted by his actions, there's something wrong here. Why should I feel empathy for them over the kids that were hurt?

I never claimed that.

But speaking of wrong, I do think there is something wrong with the statement "I'll be sure not to say how little I care that he killed himself in front of his family." You are perfectly content with the misery of people who did not participate in the crimes, and cared about the guy who did. It's entirely possible to be disgusted by someone's actions and still care about them. If you don't see that, then I have nothing else to say.

Some people feel more empathy towards abused children and their families than towards the family of one of the pedophiles that abused them. Your priorities obviously skew differently.

Like yeah even monsters have family- but the tragedy is just as much that they loved someone they didn't know was a monster, not just that he died.

Obviously it's a tragic situation for them all the way around.

Personally I would be more upset by a son's death than his actions, no matter how "monstrous" those actions. I wouldn't rank them as equally tragic. Death is final.

See to me, if I had a son who turned out to be a pedophile, I've already lost them, death or not. This isn't any old crime, he was involved in the exploitation of thousands of children. As young as three. How many of the children in those pictures died? How many will kill themselves one day? And my loved one was part of that?

There is no way I could see that that wasn't that the person I loved must have died a long time ago. The literal death would just be icing on the cake.

Different anon—my mom’s dad raped his wife and all three of his kids and spent his 70th birthday in jail for trying to kidnap and rape a paperboy, who the fuck knows how much other horrific shit he got up to that no-one ever found out about. My mom spent her whole life fucked up because her dad was a monster—her mom drank herself to death at 53, my mom at 66, and her oldest brother at 47. I only found out how awful he was after he died. I was, idk, eight? And so I ended up mourning who I thought he’d been, not who he was, and hoping there was a hell so he could roast in it. It’s not fucking noble to realize you sat down to family dinners and hugged a person who tortured children and feel sickened by it.

For the record, I'm not making fun of the revulsion and disgust you feel when you realize that someone you knew all your life isn't the person you knew. Those are valid feelings.

I'm just amazed at how quick to disown offspring some people are when they find out their kid (whatever the age) did something awful. You know, instead of contemplating the possibility that, at some point, they might have failed him in his childhood. Instead of wondering how they missed the signs over 18 years of his upbringing, and what they can do to avoid a similar situation in the future. This kind of shit doesn't happen in a vacuum, and there is no kiddy diddler gene that lies dormant in a person for years to suddenly awaken one day. Fortunately, anon I originally replied to has only presented a hypothetical situation and hasn't actually bred any child molesters to my knowledge.

my brother and I were decently close as kids. super normal upbringing. he got bullied but he had tons of support at home.

he raped a seven year old at a summer camp. i'd kill him myself if i wouldn't be jailed for life for it. he's not my family anymore. there was absolutely a kiddy diddler that just awoke in him one day. he even said "he just wondered what it was like." no remorse. nothing. he's trash and i hate him.

Yes, those are valid feelings, and there is no excuse for what he did.

But I highly doubt your brother just decided one day he wanted to rape kids. Saying he wondered what it was like implies he'd been contemplating it for a while. And while you found your upbringing to be super normal, I'm going to go out on a limb here, and guess it was a little different for your brother.
