When Creators Do Bad Things

(Anonymous) 2018-02-07 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
What do you do if a creator/actor you look up to or whose work you enjoy does or did something bad in the past that comes to light?

Re: When Creators Do Bad Things

(Anonymous) 2018-02-08 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
It completely depends on what they did wrong and how I feel about their work. There are definitely some things where it just makes it impossible for me to watch or reread their work without thinking about what they did and feeling gross and unpleasant, and where it infects their work and makes it worse.

Re: When Creators Do Bad Things

(Anonymous) 2018-02-08 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Depends on how bad, if it's excusable and if so, if they apologised.

Like calling someone names, using slurs, behaving badly etc. really isn't that bad in my eyes, especially if they apologised for it. Abuse, violence or rape (if actually proven, not just rumoured) is much worse.

To be specific, I'm feeling let down because I found the name of somebody I kind of admired and whose work I enjoyed on the Polanski petition, and I just hope they regret signing it now.

I don't know if there are any I 'look up to', but if I enjoy their work, it doesn't usually effect anything.

Like, across the board? There's nothing that someone could do that would change that?

Based on what I did after learning the reason Nobuhiro Watsuki was arrested, I try to seperate the work from the creator and no longer recommend anything by him to anyone or buy anything new from him.

Take for instance Depp and Burton. The latter has said some typically stupid comments about "SJW" or some shit, and the former...yeah.

But together, they made one of my favorite movies - Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - in 2005.

I can't go back in time and not pay for it, but I can not pay for their future products.

There was a fanfic writer I used to like who was incredibly talented, and was one of the few prolific, consistently good authors in my fandom.

Then I joined a forum they were a moderator on and learned they were incredibly, blatantly racist.

I left the forum, both because of his racism and because the other moderators didn't police or penalize him for it.

The social media behavior of a (former) regular actress on a show I watch completely soured me on her and her character, to the point that I can't stomach any episode she returns in.

And by "behavior", I mean stalking fans, flinging slurs and profanity at anyone who dared criticize her or the character she played, things like that. Not huge in the grand scheme of things, but goddamn, I can't stand a bully.

Re: When Creators Do Bad Things

(Anonymous) 2018-02-08 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
It depends on what the bad things are. Sexual assault, without a question, I'm done with them and never watching or supporting another thing they do ever again. Racism, sexism, homophobia, most likely not supporting them unless they realize what they did was wrong, genuinely apologize and learn from it.

If someone hasn't done something specifically problematic, but just seems arrogant and like a bit of an asshole, I really don't care. I once got lectured for liking an actor who jokingly said some negative things about HIMSELF because apparently that makes him a jerk. That, I don't understand at all.

Re: When Creators Do Bad Things

(Anonymous) 2018-02-08 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
Depends. How long ago was it? Have they acknowledged and apologised for it? Are they actively different now and trying to do better? I'm a very firm believer in letting people improve, so I try to judge more on what people are doing NOW than what they did in the past.

Re: When Creators Do Bad Things

(Anonymous) 2018-02-08 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
It's tough. I'm still sort of loyal to David Letterman, on one hand, and I know that's objectively stupid.

I guess I'm kind of the same way about Joss Whedon, except that I wasn't a giant Whedon fan. And I don't get worked up over the stuff about Mark Wahlberg, which was very bad. I just--I'm a little more leery of some people than I already was, you know?

I don't really believe all the Al Franken accusations; some of them just sound like bullshit.

Bill Cosby I got incredibly angry about. He'd been a big part of my childhood. So there's a line where you're dead to me.

But it's not a hard and fast rule.

I guess it depends on what they did. I've never been a huge fan of anyone who turned out to be a pedophile or sexual predator or anything like that, so idk how I'd handle that.

Smaller scandals like infidelity or he-said she-said crap, or just generally being a scummy person, I normally don't care about.

Tbh a lot of the time I won't even know if they've done something bad because I really don't pay much attention to the people behind the media I consume.

But for actual shitbag things that have affected my enjoyment of something: Lost Prophets. I used to love their music but the lead singer was convicted of pedophilia and I tossed away their CD's and haven't listened to any of their songs in god knows how long. Just no, that's way too far for me.

Same with the guy from Glee, I still like the show but his character, who I actually liked, is forever tainted for me and I'd never watch a scene with him in again.

For other offensive things it depends on how long ago it happened and whether there was an apology or if they've clearly changed. But it's often a case-by-case basis and I have no generic rule of thumb for it.

I also don't 'look up' to celebrities or creators, they're just people to me and that's it. Some of them seem fun though but that's as far as my liking of them goes. I don't get celebrity idolization tbh.

There's no one I'm attached to that I wouldn't drop them if there's a credible accusation of sexual assault, if that's what your asking.

I feel betrayed and hurt.

I stop watching if it's bad enough.

(Anonymous) 2018-02-08 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
Haven't watched anything of Woody Allen's since Everyone Says I Love You, because after that is about when I became aware of his relationship with Soon-Yi and rumors about him abusing Dylan Farrow.

Haven't watched anything of Roman Polanski's since I became aware of his crimes.

Haven't watched anything of Mel Gibson's for quite some time.

Johnny Depp, Kevin Spacey, and Quentin Tarantino have been added to the list of people whose projects I don't really want to watch anymore.

Re: When Creators Do Bad Things

Honestly, I don't care what they did. Celebrities aren't "real people" in the sense that I will ever meet one or that my life would be directly impacted by one. And movies and TV shows aren't made by one icky person, but hundreds in a concerted effort. It seems a waste to avoid a good movie/story/experience over one iffy guy.

Anything involving abuse/assault/rape/violence, I drop them like a fly. Everything else is varying degrees of forgivable.

I rarely buy stuff/actively support in the first place, so it doesn't change much. I'll still like the stuff they've made and keep up with new stuff if it's still good.

I'm probably skipping out on a concert one of my favorite bands is having nearby next week because without explicitly saying so they're clearly racist Trump supporters. It breaks my heart because their music is basically what I based my musical taste on. I still have their music on my mp3 player -- which I pirated way before this came out -- but if I ever decide to see them again it probably won't be until hopefully God willing sooner than later Trump is out of office and the political climate changes.

Re: When Creators Do Bad Things

I start avoiding their stuff and avoiding gossip about them and just kind of push them out of my mind. They don't exist to me anymore.

I don't buy a lot of media to begin with (I have cable and go to the library, so that takes care of movies, TV, and books, and I'm a weirdo who owns almost no music) so there's a good chance I don't actually own anything with the person's name on it.

If I felt I needed to get rid of something I owned because it involved someone evil, I'd probably just give it away/donate it and not ritually destroy it or anything. I feel like that would be a waste and dumping stuff in a landfill doesn't harm the evil person, it just harms the environment (although if it's a paperback book, I might toss it in the recycling, since books feel like less of a collaborative effort that movies - event though producing them obviously does involve multiple people.)

Like others have said, whether I bother doing anything, including just not consuming their stuff, really depends on what they did. Assault and battery and abuse, mistreatment of kids or animals, and blatant racism, sexism, or homophobia are usually deal-breakers (although I don't believe everything is unforgivable - I think bigots can change, for example). On the other hand, say what you will about Martha Stewart, but I've never been able to give a shit about the stock trading thing, especially since it sounds like she wasn't trying to be shady, and she did go to jail for it, so she didn't get away with anything. She broke the law, but I'm not going to stop watching her cooking shows over something like that.
