I read somewhere that the majority of women that read shota yaoi project themselves onto the child. I forget what the source for that is though.

But that makes sense in a way, especially for fic. If you were a minor writing from the POV of a minor who thinks an adult is sexy, then the POV of the fic would be making the adult sexy, not making the child sexy from the POV of the adult?

Shipping two minors is not wrong, and although adult/minor ships can be skeevy (but not always are, specially when we're talking about something like a 18yo/16yo ship), they're still fictional.

Respectfully disagree, OP. My one ship right now is two ten year old boys, nonsexual, pure fluff, friendship, and emotional support. One half of the ship has godawful parents, and there's nothing wrong with kids supporting one another in such a case. Remember Forrest Gump? Who didn't like seeing Forrest comfort Jennie? It's like that for me. It's right on American TV, too, so there's nothing gross, illegal, or skeevy about it.

Not going anon, because I'm someone whose interest you've just called 'sick' and 'wrong.' I won't argue if you think it's sick and wrong FOR YOU. Only you can be the judge of that, and some people can't separate shipping from sex for whatever reason. I'm grayace so it comes all too easy to me personally. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you've been bombarded by insidious messages on tumblr, or tumblr-ish hive minds full of antis, bullies, "call outs," doxxers, and assholes pushing the witch hunt on creatives over the years. They're a judgmental bunch and the dearth of creativity and freedom in fandom. If you want an actual solution to your anxiety, I suggest not bumming around in spaces with antis. They're full of it and will only stress you out. Check out problem_attic sometime if you're interested in chit chatting with folks who won't be quick to jump down your throat as antis and their pin prick narrow views of what's "acceptable" in fandom.

I'm sorry your past works have caused you stress and uncertainty. I've orphaned many works for the same reason, and I regret it.

The reason I don't get too pearl-clutchy about fic that ships minors or minor/adult is that I don't know the age of the author (or how old the author was back when the fic was written) and I have zero interest in investigating the author to make sure it's all acceptable because I don't have the time or desire to be a purity crusader. I was once a teenager who watched shows about teenagers and shipped teenage characters. That's not weird or wrong.

You engaged in perfectly normal fantasy behavior for a creative kid in fandom. It's skeevy for adults to ship adult/minors, and to sexualize minors in or out of ships.

It's not, imo, skeevy for adults to ship minors with each other in a non-sexualized way, because they think the characters are cute together or are likely to become canon when they're older, or because the characters are at that age where they're having romances but aren't really adults... like, I don't think it's creepy or wrong to be invested in the emotional bond between kid characters if that's what the story is about (like the sort of innocent maybe-romance-maybe-friendship Ghibli movie relationships, or Steven and Connie, or any of the Harry Potter ships I guess?) but the idea of sexualizing it skeeves me the hell out, because I'm an adult.

I didn't write very sexy stories about teen or kid characters when I was a kid, or I'm sure I'd also feel weird about looking back at them... I probably wrote some HP stuff when I was in my teens that I wouldn't write today, but I always preferred writing about adults over other kids when I was a kid...

Anyway, OP, I don't think you did anything wrong or abnormal, but I get why you don't want those fics to follow you. Just don't beat yourself up over it.

I am highly, massively amused by NOT-real as in fictional minors being in relationships with all sort of people. You may think it is sick, fair enough, but that does not make it objectively sick. People rarely calibrate their morals first and foremost according to what media they enjoy. Live and let live OP <3<3
