I'm not a slash/yaoi fan myself, but I've heard many slash fans say that they find "could have been canon" fanfic boring because it's just more-of-the-same and thus find fanfic about canon couples to be inherently boring. Combine that with having a preference for male/male pairings and you get lots of slash.
