I've gotten so obsessed with a fictional character that all I want is to do fanart of them. I haven't painted anything else in over a month. I just want to paint them over and over until my mind knows by heart every tiny line of their face, every shadow. I want to paint that light in their eyes until it's burned onto my very soul.

This...is not good. Right? I guess it wouldn't be that bad if it were some super popular character, but it's not and I'm afraid people will grow tired of it, so I don't even publish my art anymore.

I wish I wouldn't find them so damn mesmerizing, it would make my life so much easier if I didn't see their face every time I close my eyes or hear their voice in my dreams.

I know it will pass, but I kinda don't want it to, either

Anything that makes you want to practice is good.

Keep painting them for as long as the urge stays with you. If you really want to be "good" about it, try varying your style to capture them in different ways and stretch your abilities.

I'm glad you have something inspiring you to put more art into the world!

I think that if there's other people out there who are obsessed with that fictional character, they'd love to see your art! I mean, no pressure to post your stuff, anon, but as someone who has tended to obsess over and even madly crush over unpopular/minor characters... we're always hungry for ANY sort of pictures or fic involving them, even stuff that's not ~*super high quality*~.

And you do you, anon :)

There's nothing wrong with doing fanart or doing works on whatever topic you want no matter what other people think.

That said, your language here does sound a little bit on the ... uh... obsessive side. So watch out for that I guess.

Nothing wrong with having a waifu or a husbando, anon. It's a beautiful feeling and as long as you're happy feeling that way it's okay.

I don't think it's a terrible thing. Unless it starts to severely interfere with your regular life, doing art again and again might be good practice for you and it might be a good way for you to help your obsession pass.

I know the feeling lately. I'm obsessed with one character in Tangled The Series. But I like to focus on the positives. I am excited about writing fanfic again and creating.

It's only a bad thing if you're doing actual verifiable harm to yourself or others. Life's too short to not let yourself be excited about something because it seems "not normal"

So long as you're still hitting rl goals like eating properly and your air-and-sunlight ration, just enjoy the buzz. Somewhere on the internet someone is weeping with joy that content for their favourite minor character is turning up.

Maybe use all the practice you're getting to play around with a few new techniques. And have fun!

Hopefully your art & technique improves that once this character loses his "shine", you'll have applicable skills!

Additionally, if you're concerned about annoying people etc. by continuously posting X character art BUT you want to share it, how about creating a side art blog or Tumblr or w/e? Dedicated solely to this character? I've appreciated niche blogs like that, and I'm sure others have too. Plus, you can occasionally drop the blog's name I other posts of your main blog, even if you update the side blog frequently.

Enjoy! I also know the fervor of wanting to capture someone's likeness endlessly. Sigh.

There's def someone out there that loves the same character, even if they might be a lurker I'm sure you'll make their day!

Before he was famous outside the general Polynesian area, Taika Waititi did a TedX Talk where he talked about being an artist and how sometimes artists get obsessed with creating the same thing over and over and over and that it's OK. I urge you to find it on YouTube because it made me feel better about obsessing over painting a certain type of tree a million times. I just went with it and I've gotten so good at it I sold a painting with that tree for almost $300. Once the obsession runs its course and I've taken the skill as far as I think I can I move on to a new skill obsession. Waves, fan palms, coconut palms, and right now it's pine trees. We don't really have pine trees where I live, just fake tropical island ones like casuarina and norfolk island pines. I've already sold a shit ton of pines set against a galaxy night sky. Keep up the obsession and see where it takes you artistically. Don't refuse the muse.

I feel you, OP! I've lost all focus on painting my own characters the past week or so because of fannish obsession. But you can still use this to further your skills-- when the day comes that you're ready to move on and create other things, you may find you're a stronger artist because of your fan obsession fueling your work for a period. It's all about trying new techniques, new angles, new poses... and letting your love for the character keep you going through new technical challenges!

Also, as someone who's been super obsessed with things that are not the most popular, it might annoy some people, but you're going to be SOMEBODY's hero for being the person churning out fanart of a less popular character.
