I feel like she's the kind of secondary character who will likely get written out and left in production hell rather than be developed.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-24 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Which, honestly, might not be the worst possible outcome, from a fan point of view. Leaves the ground wide open for developing your own take and interpretation.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-24 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Why would you think that?

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2018-03-24 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
An extended history of that happening to LGBTQ characters in both Marvel and DC continuity.

Or more generally, the way both Marvel and DC treats characters who are not marketing franchise anchors.

Who is this?
raspberryrain: (braids)

Valkyrie from Thor:Ragnarok.

Cause gladiator slavery isn't real slavery. Being forced to fight to the death is fine. K.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-25 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
That clearly isn't what the secret says, but you seem really determined to find offense.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-25 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt but the OP (you?) literally said "meh" and acted like what happened WASN'T slavery and WASN'T all that bad because she didn't capture women/children (which we don't actually know).

(Anonymous) 2018-03-25 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
Excuse me, it's implying there's a sliding scale of acceptable slavery and that's not dubious at all.

What the fuck, why would selling women be less acceptable than selling men? Thanks for that backhanded sexism in a series where women are just as capable fighters as men. And they ARE slaves, who are made to literally fight to a gruesome death for the entertainment of others. The only way I can come to terms with this secret is if you're trolling.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-25 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
SA - also, HOW is it clear she's not happy with what she's done? When does she ever apologize? I'm not going to give her brownie points for being an alcoholic. She drinks herself because her comrades got massacred, not because she gives a fuck for all the people she has enslaved and murdered.

She drinks herself because her comrades got massacred, not because she gives a fuck for all the people she has enslaved and murdered.

When in the movie was that established? Was there a scene where Valkyrie waves a bottle of whiskey and says, "I'm mourning my fallen comrades ONLY, definitely NOT the people I kidnapped and sold"?

Gladiators forced into fighting are slaves, dumbass

(Anonymous) 2018-03-25 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
Didn't the movie literally call them slaves, too?

(Anonymous) 2018-03-25 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
She is horrible, and is a murdering slaver. Given the tone of Thor 3, it's played for quirky laughs and probably isn't intended to be thought about with any level of depth. But considering this is the same universe (err, in a manner of speaking) as Captain America, Black Panther, etc. - it's definitely hard to reconcile such an evil character as a heroine.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-25 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
And Loki tried to commit genocide. Your point?

It seems a fairly standard antihero backstory to me.

Drinks too much. Fights a lot. Has Done Sketchy Shit.

Though, if we're talking social justicey implications of characters in space operas...

Who wants to discuss Luke Skywalker running around for three movies with one or both of the slaves that his uncle illegally bought for field hands?

Because R2D2 and C3PO are clearly sentient: they argue, they plan, they worry, they fear.

And they are also considered property. I mean, Princess Leia and her dad might have considered them valied retainers, but Uncle Lars buys them at auction. Luke was lured out into the desert because R2D2 tricked him into *taking off the restraining bolt*. Et cetera and so forth.

We're okay with that because they don't *look* like people?

(Anonymous) 2018-03-25 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
Oh for fuck's sake.

Blame his uncle then who got incinerated. Luke never treated them like slaves or forced them to do anything, they were all on the same mission together.

That's hardly the same thing as kidnapping people and selling them into slavery so they can kill each other.

That's a solid 8/10. I'm not mad.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-25 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
I'm actually not down with your "robots are slaves" argument, but if you're pushing that argument, I don't see where you get the idea that Leia and/or Bail considered them valued retainers vs droids?

I think Luke actually seems to humanize the droids more than anyone else in the films.

LOL, it's the first time I've heard anyone consider Luke Skywalker a slave-holder for his uncle's droids. XD

How come no one is arguing the more, imo, relevant point - that in a world that is clearly made up of slavers and enslaved, she did what she had to to avoid being in the latter category? Yes, its unethical, but the entire world was a twisted mess under Jeff Goldblum's rule, and she likely would have been a gladiator herself had she not done what she did.

(Anonymous) 2018-03-25 02:01 pm (UTC)(link)
So, assuming she got to Sakar accidentally, and was instantly thrust into the position of "catch slaves or die in gladiatorial combat" - that argument still doesn't make a lot of sense. You might excuse, in a brief instance, an immoral action meant to preserve one's own life. But she literally flies a ship around the world and is perfectly capable of leaving if she wants. If she had any sense of morality, she would have at least run off, stolen a ship, whatever. Hiding among the scavengers would also surely be morally preferable to literally kidnapping and enslaving innocent people and seeing them to their death for the sick entertainment of others.

And that's assuming she's accidentally on Sakar.

There's nothing, absolutely nothing, defensible about this character.
