I am not opposed to Tolkien slash in general but I HATE Aragorn/Legolas because I don't think they're a good fit personality-wise at ALL.

I can't get into it because the first ever slash fic I ever read was over the shoulder of my best friend and involved Legolas being Aragorn's slave. And Legolas's race of elves could have their horniness activated by rubbing their ears. And Legolas fucked a tree while a battle was going on.

Weird introduction to slash fic.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-05 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
LOL! Oddly enough, I have heard of that fic, although I have never read it. Years ago, someone had posted that they just could not understand the WHY of that fic, and how they expected that one day they'd be lying on their deathbed, and instead of pondering the mysteries of the hereafter, they'd still be thinking, "and then, Legolas fucked a tree. WHY?"

Too funny that we were talking about it yesterday and it pops into fandom discussion today! :D

I agree. I can see the appeal of art for the hotness. But as a pairing? Nope.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-05 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
I never cared for Aragorn/Legolas but it only bothered me because it was so prevalent back when I first entered the Tolkien fandom.

I love the idea of that pairing, but so far I haven't found a fic that I liked.

What did Pern fandom do? All I can think of is the Anne McCaffrey tent-peg thing.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-05 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Anne used to sic her lawyers on fans and hand out cease-and-desist letters. She banned fanfiction for a bit. Then she set up a website that people would write their fanfiction on but it couldn't contain any of her characters or counter the rules of her universe (so no male gold riders). There were a bunch of roleplaying weyrs but no fanfiction like we have now.

I used to see a lot of Pern forum roleplays that put specific rules on what genders and sexual orientations could have what dragons, with gay men relegated to low-ranking green dragons, because “it’s canon!”

Pern fandom was my first fandom and it was such a bitter disappointment what happened. I had so many fic ideas but they never saw the light of day because of how the fandom turned out.

I do have a bit of a disconnect when it comes to creators who died before I was even born. Like, gayness isn't the only thing that would offend or upset them but they are products of a different time. We don't live in that time now and we couldn't really emulate it. I find people who are upset that Tolkien wouldn't approve of gay relationships are just upset because they don't approve. They so conveniently forget a lot of the other stuff that's aged badly because that's not the thing they actually care about so it's easy to ignore the argument.

It's a little harder when the author is actually still alive, although then I can see how the author is behaving to judge for myself if I want to honor their wishes or not.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-05 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
Do you mean McCaffrey or Tolkein? Because McCaffrey only died in 2011, so I hope you're not younger than that!

(Anonymous) 2018-04-05 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
Tolkien wouldn't approve of gay relationships

Do we know that for sure? He was at Oxford for decades, after all. Or do you mean the catholic thing?

You are just hanging out in the wrong parts of the fandom, OP. This fandom has just as much slash as any other.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-05 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Not really UNLESS you count The Hobbit movie fandom. I have looked.

Let Pern be a warning to us all.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-05 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
I LOLed at "no one should EVER be the Pern fandom", thank you.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-05 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Nonny giggled while LotR fandom Perned.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-05 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
Okay but Legolas/Gimli >>>>> Legolas/Aragorn

(Anonymous) 2018-04-05 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
They literally rode off into the sunset together

Despite the fact that they presumably weren't even 100% sure Gimli would be welcome at all

In a ship Legolas built himself

I mean come on when your ship LITERALLY SETS SAIL there's not much to dispute.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-05 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
Definitely.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-05 06:05 am (UTC)(link)
I like them both. I just like that trio in general and the friendship between them.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-05 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
But what are your thoughts on threesomes?

(Anonymous) 2018-04-09 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Tolkien fandom has always been so obsessed with making sure they always agree with the writer to a worrisome degree. Just because he wrote your faves doesn't make him God, but you'd think he was from how many people talk.
