Re: Silly things that annoy you.

I work at a doctor's office, and it always bugs me when patients call the doctor by his first name rather than Dr. Smith. He doesn't seem to care but I find it disrespectful...it takes a lot of time and hard work to become a doctor, and I feel like you should recognize that by not calling them Bob.

*Not real names, obviously.

If he's okay with it, why do you care?

Do you know for sure the doctor hasn't told some patients, "Please, call me 'Bob'"? Using first names vs. titles depends on the relationship between the two people.

He always introduces himself to new patients as Dr. Smith, I've never once heard him say "call me Bob". There are some people who do, but they're people he knows from high school, or family friends or something (we live in a fairly small town so there's some of that). For someone he has no prior knowledge of to just start calling him Bob out of nowhere when he never told them to just rubs me the wrong way. It'd be kind of hard to say "no, call me Dr. Smith" without seeming kinda douchey though.

I don't know, I'm probably being dumb but I would never take it upon myself to call a doctor by their first name without them specifically saying it's okay so it's just weird to me when other people do.

Do you eavesdrop on all his appointments or something? Otherwise, I don't know how you could possible know whether or not he's given these people permission to call him Bob.

No, but on a first appointment for a new person, he comes out to get them from the waiting area and introduces himself as Dr. Smith. I didn't think he would've at some later point told them to call him Bob but I suppose it's possible.

I'm probably putting way too much thought into this, but the title of the thread did say "silly things" lol

Many times, people are more formal when they first meet someone and become less formal over time.

As long as you're putting too much thought into it anyway, consider the possibility that the simplest explanation may be the most likely one. It seems far more likely that, like most doctors, Doc Smith has told his patients that they may call him Bob than it is that your town is full of rude assholes running roughshod over an inexplicably shy doctor.

Of course, it would be easy enough for you to find out. If Dr. Smith is so mild-mannered that he would hesitate to correct a patient about his name, you have nothing to lose by asking him, "Doesn't it bother you when Mrs. Herkimer calls you Bob?"

Trust me -- doctors aren't shy about this sort of thing. If it bothered him at all, he'd speak up. It seems more likely that your boss is confident enough in his doctorly superiority that he is actively encouraging his patients to call him by his name in an attempt to be more approachable.

(Using the names from your example) Every doctor I've gone to I've started out calling Dr. Smith, and every one of them immediately says "Oh, call me Bob." At this point I feel a bit silly not using their first name right away, because I know they're just going to tell me to.

Same. The one doctor that I see the most is this big, jovial guy (think Santa Claus only without a beard) and he's very insistent that you call him by his first name.

Every doctor I've ever been to has insisted I call them by their first name.

I'd rather stick to titles, personally, but I guess it probably gets kind of tiresome to be called Dr. Smith all the time.

I've never been to a doctor who said to call them by their first name and I never would do so without them telling me to, but as I'm learning from this thread, apparently it's common. So I don't know if it's a regional/cultural thing or what.

I personally would rather stick to titles, too, I would just feel uncomfortable calling them by their first name, but you have a point, maybe sometimes they get tired of it.

I don't think it would happen in Germany, unless the doctor is a family member or something.

Are the patients older than the doctor? Some older people get super awkward about calling younger people by titles or Mr./Ms. It's like there's some kind of DOES NOT COMPUTE error in the social hierarchy calculation.

Re: Silly things that annoy you.

(Anonymous) 2018-04-21 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
Now that I think about it, most of them are. That's a good point that I hadn't thought about, they might just feel weird calling someone younger than them by a title.

The Dr might feel weird being called a title by someone his mom's age, particularly if they also seem uncomfortable about it.
