Uh, watching on Hulu and Netflix isn't the same as watching on illegal sites. And not every house is a Nielsen house.

BC everyone can do that!

I live in Europe. There is no legal way for me to watch US shows live, and even if there was, they air in the middle of the night for me. I torrent the ep the day after and if it's a show I truly love I usually get the DVD box set.

Unlike broadcast, the networks know exactly how many people are watching a series via streaming services, and bean count what they're getting from streaming when they make run/cancel decisions.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-16 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't own a television, d'you want me to go out and buy one specifically so I can complain if shows get cancelled?

Some of us don't have an extra 60+ dollars to drop on cable tv. Hulu is 8 dollars in comparison, and is still completely legal, so fuck off.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-16 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)

My internet bill = $85 a month

I can't afford both cable and the internet, but you can no longer watch tv in the US "live" unless you pay for cable. Most tvs will literally not show you a picture at all, you get a BSOD if you don't have a cable (or satellite). So I choose to keep my internet going instead, because at least then I get...

Hulu = under $10 a month
Netflix= under $15 (or between $13/$20)

Hulu and Netflix *combined* add up to one week of groceries for me. Cable is astoundingly more and if I had that money available, I'd use it to join a gym or something.

Don't guilt trip me because I can't afford to watch things live.

I don't live in the US so I can't watch US shows live unless I go through the pain of live-streaming, but that doesn't even count towards the views so it won't matter.

(And I did that once, hoy boy never again, US advert-breaks drive me nuts).

Also watching on Netflix/Hulu/Amazon is legal and for some TV shows absolutely counts towards viewership, which as an international fan I like.

I can be sad if a show I like gets canned bro.

Actually, if you choice is watching live but without a Nielsen box or on Hulu within a few days of the show airing you are actually doing better for the show if you watch on Hulu. Cable companies do NOT know who watches live and do not report it. Hulu does. Nowadays, the rating for live are looked at and compared to the +3day and +7day and all are taken into consideration.

If you are not a Nielsen home then the best thing you can do is to discuss the show on social media as it airs, whether or not you are watching live (networks do pay attention to trending numbers as well) and then watch on Hulu, the network's website or OnDemand as soon as the show is up so your viewership can be counted and considered.

Watching on Netflix isn't as useful since shows usually only go up there after the season is over, but viewership there can also be considered if the next season's numbers put it on the bubble so it's not completely unhelpful.

OP, did you really think that watching shows via Hulu/Netflix/Amazon has no influence whatsoever on their commercial success?

(Anonymous) 2018-05-16 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
My sister's in Canada and watches The 100. No channel there (that she can get) airs it, so she watches it on Netflix. That's as "legal" as she can get.

There's no one-size-fits-all fix here, OP. The whole system's screwy.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-17 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Also, there are all kinds of stupid region-blocking things going on that keep people from watching "legally" when they WANT TO.

This is a dumb mentality. I can't afford both internet & cable, so I go with internet so I can pay my bills, stay in contact with people, Google shit, argue with BuzzFeed, & WATCH NETFLIX.

Even if I did pay for cable & watch live, it wouldn't matter because I'm not a "Nielsen house" so ??????

Jesus Christ, grow up, OP.

Netflix is the only kind of tv I have right now.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-17 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
Tell me how to watch Netflix originals "live" so that they don't get cancelled. I'm all ears.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-17 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
Around here basic service starts at $170 and up. Internet alone costs me $80. Hulu and Netflix are perfectly legal ways to watch, and those watches are counted/tracked by those companies so us Non-Nielson households are actually contributing. You're welcome, BTW.

Besides I work up to 60 hrs a week. I'm betting the few network shows I watch aren't on when I'm around anyway.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-17 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
This is an ignorant secret. I watch on Hulu, and that does count toward the next day viewing. In my area, I simply don't have access to free broadcast television (too rural), and I'm unwilling to spend huge dollars for cable when my Hulu subscription costs me $6 a month.

Oh come on ya gotta know the way they calculate "ratings" is archaic as fuck there's no magical solution.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-17 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
I'm in Australia and most of the shows I watch aren't shown here so yeah, can't watch them live.

You might have a point with illegal sites, but not the other paid streaming.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-17 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
And the only reason I say might, is that combating piracy does probably factor some way into the cost of every show, like shoplifting and trying to prevent it factor into retail store prices. But I very much doubt that is a make or break amount.

What keeps a show on the air is combination of factors - ratings (which is Nielsen families watching live basic and cable plus DVR playback within 3 or 7 days (not everyone watching), possibly On Demand, and possibly streaming), show cost, hype, awards, sponsorship, network relationship with show producers, etc.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-17 05:47 am (UTC)(link)
Don't be so disingenuous.

Like my queer West Coast ass would ever be a Nielsen family home measuring anything.

It's not my fault at all. In fact, I have every right to lay the blame at the feet of TPTB: I pay for my subscriptions up the wazoo, both Netflix and via purchases on iTunes; I spend perhaps 200 USD every year on those. The fact that this my vote and all other purchasers' vote isn't counted properly is a travesty.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-17 12:06 pm (UTC)(link)
You're American, aren't you.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-17 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't live in the US so I can't watch it live. If there is a way, I would be happy to know

OP, KNOW TWO THINGS!
