LOL! Right? The basic concept of Eurovision isn't hard to grasp. The fact that it's not really a cultural thing in the U.S. the way it is in UK/Europe doesn't mean we don't understand it.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-20 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
You know the UK is part of Europe, right?

'Ha ha, Americans don't know what music is! All they hear is gunfire every day and GO SPORTS TEAM!"

(Anonymous) 2018-05-20 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Eurovision isn't even really music, more like a big international drag show.

idk I've seen a lot of Americans on social media going on about how they just don't understand the Eurovision.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-20 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure most Europeans give a fuck whether Americans 'get' Eurovision or not tbh.

I sure as hell don't.

IDK the voting system is kind of hard to get...

(Anonymous) 2018-05-20 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Not really. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voting_at_the_Eurovision_Song_Contest

(Anonymous) 2018-05-20 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah no that's easy. If you're a small country then it's whoever you don't want to piss off (so for every ex-Soviet country Russia usually gets points). If you're a big country then you give points to your neighbours or smaller countries that you have a lot of truck with.

Other than that it's usually neighbours.

Occasionally though, it's based on the music.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-20 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah, it's simple. You can't vote for your own country, so you vote for your neighbours or your political allies. Or you make a short trip into your neighbouring country and then vote for your own. *g*

(Anonymous) 2018-05-21 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I can see how Americans wouldn't understand how the person with the most votes wins.

I can get why it might seem strange at first and also that some Americans might not "get" it even after giving it a try. But there's loads of actual Europeans who express disbelief that people enjoy it every year. You can't move for them complaining on social media!

Overall. yes this attitude is kind of annoying. Do you like laughing at 2-3 minute pop songs that range from terrible to actually ok to so bad they're funny? Do you like OTT costumes and staging? Would you enjoy playing a game of "guess who is going to give 12 points to their neighbours" along with "ooh which country gave them nothing so just pissed off an ally!"? You only really need to watch it once to "get" it.

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2018-05-20 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I suspect this is one of those cases where "I don't understand" really means "why are you such a shithead as to have different taste."

(Anonymous) 2018-05-20 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Eurovision is a joke. It's all about political statements. I stopped watching it after the Ukrainian debacle in 2017.

I primarily know what it is because it was parodied on Monty Python and Father Ted.

I don't think it's difficult to understand at all, but I do love witnessing the initial confusion of someone who's only just encountered Eurovision for the first time.

Americans just don't rightly give a damn about Eurovision.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-20 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I saw a post which was crowing about how cool it was that for once, Europe got a show (Eurovision) which Americans couldn't easily watch. Like, now we understood what it was like to be them.

Um.

1) A majority of Americans still pretty much don't care, regardless. Some Europeans are going "woo hoo, we have something Americans don't understand and can't participate in!" And Americans usually respond with "okay, you guys have fun".
2) Uh...there are Europeans who think people in the US have always had quick and easily constant access to European television but we were *choosing* not to watch it? Being unable to access European tv was the norm up until internet streaming became really viable. Most regular US networks won't buy a foreign show, and if they do, they want it only in English and only if they were investors in the project or the show is a massive hit. Before streaming, you had to buy the full cable package to choose to see any foreign tv show not made in an English speaking country.

Until this decade, not being able to watch European tv was...the default, for Americans.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-20 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol. Knowing and knowing. It's pretty straight forward on the surface and the music might even mean something sometimes, but it's all the stuff that goes under the campy surface that makes it fun. Besides the campy surface, of course.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-21 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
So apparently it's "everyone bash the non-Americans" week on FS.

I don't actually believe anyone says/thinks this, OP. It's trash TV. That's always been universal.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-21 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
I just don't get how it's called Eurovision but yet countries who are not a part of Europe can still participate.

I'm a massive Eurovision tragic, and I think it's more the case that Americans don't seem to get the sheer love and enthusiasm Eurovision fans have with what is a silly song contest, because they don't have the history with it.

It's like Europe watching the Superbowl. I mean, it's once a year and we do it so we don't have wars, just the passive aggressive voting.
