Antis are so heavily focused on pedophilia that it starts to look like a case of protesting too much. So yeah, I'm not surprised they'd cling to anime.

Why don't they just read the wiki pages? Or TVTropes?

(Anonymous) 2018-05-26 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
Lazy.

Or they want management of their "moral outrage" to be someone else's problem. To browbeat fandom into adhering to their comfort zones, because despite doing nothing to earn it, they're somehow entitled to it anyway. That's just what antis do. Everything is everyone else's fault and everyone else should fix it for THEIR comfort zone because they can't possibly be responsible for their own. The Internet was tailor made for them, and when people don't want to babysit them, or coddle them it's not FAAAAAAIR. *eyeroll*

Eh, personally I'm glad to see something like that. I love anime but the pedophilia has gotten completely out of control in the last five to ten years. There used to be many anime without pedophilia, now it's shoehorned in pretty much everything, even anime about adults (Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid, I'm looking at you). It's disturbing to see, so having a list of safe anime is not a bad idea, even if it is going to be dreadfully short with more recent titles.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-25 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Legit question: Exactly HOW are they defining pedophilia here? Some anti's apply this label very broadly, which is why I ask.

bettin that bottom dollar that they're screeing about 15 year olds crushing on each other in anime. you know, that normal life thing.

Or 15 year old girls in short skirts being drawn by a people from a culture that doesn't see legs as sexual...

I mean, if we're following their logic, they're either being racist by singling out anime or they believe that media without pedophilia is "hard to come by" everywhere, so...

I think these people are just like, "But they are Not Of The Age Of Majority Arbitrarily Set In My Jurisdiction!"

They are in no way thinking about the dictionary definition - children before puberty - or of any real problems that they should tackle instead of whining on the internet.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-25 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
This is what happens when you redefine 'pedophilia' to mean 'anybody under 18' instead of 'prepubescent children'. You start seeing it everywhere.

It gets a lot of people going RARGH about stuff that really, really doesn't come under that blanket and honestly, if anybody considers a sexually active animated seventeen year old to be tantamount to abusing an actual, real life child, they need help.

Don't get me wrong, there's a lot of skeevy shit in a lot of anime, but simply having teen characters in relationships is not pedophilia by any means and that's what a lot of these crazy fucks seem to think.

I've watched a shitload of anime in my life and I literally cannot think of a single one I've ever seen that contains pedophilia, either with an older character preying on a prepubescent (or even prepubescent looking) character or with sexualised characters that are children. Even in something like The Ancient Magus' Bride, the younger character is 16, which is the age a girl can marry in Japan, with parental consent, if I recall, so it's perfectly acceptable in the country of origin.

What the fuck are these people watching to find pedophilia everywhere? Actually, don't tell me. I don't want to know.

I agree with this. A
Another important point is I think that characters don't age, while people do. When I was 11, I shipped some of the Digimon kids. I still do now when I'm almost 30, but according to the internet it's creepy now?

And you're right. It's really hard to find *actual* pedophilia in anime... like, there certainly are some Hentai and Yaoi anime that contain it, but I' hard pressed to remember one.
Maybe Kuroshitsuji? I absolutely *don't* mean the Sebastian/Ciel ship, which is not canon in any sort of way, despite the baity art sometimes, but I do mean the creepy old guy who clearly lusted after Ciel and the events that happened to him in the past (am trying to be vague cause of spoilers).

If that's the case, I'd be screwed, too. I'm in my 30s and I enjoyed watching "The Jungle Movie" last year and seeing Arnold and Helga finally get together, 'cause that was a pairing I liked when I was a kid.

They usually turn out to have serious issues themselves, the people who become Single Issue Wonks about it. They either have a connection as a victim/close to someone who was, or they're desperately repressing their own urges. They're the ones with the horrified fascination with the topic, and that's why they watch it for us, so we don't have to...

And yeah, antis refusing to recognize adult or nearly adult, characters as adults means they're taking the agency away from those characters and/or viewers of the same age who just want to watch some romance. Age of consent exists for a reason, but there's also a reason why we let 16 year olds drive cars but 12 year olds absolutely are not allowed to.

Someone with no room for that nuance...is headed down a dangerous road.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-26 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
And what people who go on the warpath about pedophilia don't always get is that actual pedophiles don't need sexual content in stories about children in order to be attracted to the story. So you can attempt to weed out things with obvious sexual content featuring sufficiently underage persons, sure, but you're performing that service for people who don't want that stuff anyway. But actual pedophiles, unfortunately, need no encouragement.

There are several fairly g rated productions with creepy weirdos lurking on the fringe. Because the creeps are attracted to the child actors in the perfectly innocent production, or they're interpreting things as sexual that no one else would. Someone screening for triggering content wouldn't notice it, because they think like a normal person.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-26 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
Okay I don’t see everything involving people under 18 in relationships, certainly not with each other, as pedophilia. On the other hand I never thought of your second point at all and now I’m skeeved out. Blech.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-26 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
I find it hilarious that people will get so up in arms about that sort of shit in media (which is 100% fictional) while completely ignoring all of the sexualizing of real live teenagers that goes on in Western culture. Have you even looked at the clothing that's being marketed to teenagers today? Half of it makes them look like mini hookers. I find THAT way more disturbing than fanservice in anime will ever be.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-26 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, well, addressing the problem of the sexualizing of youth in Western culture would require actual effort and risk, in a way that screeching at people on the internet does not.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-26 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
No one cares about real children. Fictional children, though? That's where the priority lies.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-26 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
They really don't. They say they do, but they really don't. It's kind of sad.

The phrase "I love not watching pedophilia!!!" genuinely made me laugh.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-26 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
I stopped bothering with anime because it mostly centers around kids or young teens and I can't relate to that shit anymore nor do I want to become attracted to anime teens, animated or not. Shit's just weird.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-26 04:56 am (UTC)(link)
I still watch a lot of anime and most of what I watch stars teen characters, but I no longer feel attracted to them. I don't even feel attracted towards the characters I used to think were cute back when I was a teenager. I just feel kinda protective of my favorites now and want to huggle them when bad things happen.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-26 12:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel you. You can only watch the same highschool romance and coming of age plots so many times before they become repetitive and boring; that’s why I’ve been focusing on josei and seinen manga lately. I’ve found quite a few good titles, but sadly I know it’s almost imposible any of them will ever become so popular they get adapted into anime :(
