It's so hard for me to relate to complaints like this. My own fic is always better than someone else's. Always.

I appreciate the love you have for your own fic, but I get OP. I already know what's going to happen in my own fic, and while I enjoy it, I enjoy reading someone else's work. it's a surprise. I compare it to eating a treat from the bakery versus one I made myself. or dinner spaghetti when I know how to make spaghetti better. it's a craving.

I don't know what fandoms you're in OP, but if you're in Naruto fandom, blacknoise (http://www.archiveofourown.org/users/blacknoise) is an MD and her H/C fic is phenomenal.

I got to ask.

What about if fandom canon is really medically inaccurate? Because quite a few are and I'm not sure how fair it is to expect more from fanfic writers than actual professionals who are getting paid.

You know what? (Not OP though) IMO, if canon did it, fanfic writers are allowed to do it.

While lots of fans may *want* to fix canon, there's no actual obligation on the part of fans to do it. Sometimes the fun challenge of fanfic is working with the rules you've been given. A fanfiction which adheres perfectly to real world accuracy may be an objectively good story but that doesn't necessarily mean it's a good *fanfic* if it's trying so hard to be realistic that everyone's OOC.

And, sometimes, the people complaining that authors are "getting it wrong" are wrong themselves. So it helps to weigh that possibility along with the feedback.

Do fanfic readers honestly think fanfic authors have all day to sit there researching their fics (usually wish fulfillment/fantasies, often porn) for no extra money and no hope of earning money on it in the future, in the vague hope that a random stranger will deign to click the Kudos button?

Yeah, in House fandom the fic was often far more accurate than the show, not just in medical terms but in terms of how a hospital works.

Yes, yes, and HELL YES.
I love research, and do a lot of it, but it really irks me when its obvious that someone hasn't put even the most *cursory* effort into it.

I yell at tv/movies all the time for inaccurate medical stuff, and when i find myself doing it with fic, too - SO ANNOYING.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-05 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I really do think it's more than a bit ridiculous to except fandom writers to be super medically knowledgeable when they're writing for fun & for free, especially since the canon source almost definitely won't much better anyway.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-05 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
This. I can forgive inaccuracies in fic that don't really impact the story heavily. Like, I would probably wouldn't even back button someone being in a coma for six years and then getting up and walking around perfectly after waking up unless there was something supernatural involved because most people just aren't educated on that kind of shit and it's not ruining the story.

I find I'm more easily annoyed when canon does it though, especially medical canon who make flubs they could have researched in like 2 seconds.

OMG yes. Especially those shows that are all "We have a doctor as a consultant!!" self-congratulatory interviews. You have a doc but he's an idiot or you are NOT LISTENING to him!

This secret makes me happy that I work in healthcare. You know my fics are going to be medically accurate.
