I kind of feel the same. I love a majority of the characters in BP but he ended up being the little black dress of the movie for me, and I find his off-screen antics to be really obnoxious.

The origin of the phrase is the idea that "a little black dress goes with everything" (since it's a neutral color and can be accessorized to dress up or down as the situation requires).

If Black Panther was a standalone movie he'd be the fandom bicycle, but in the MCU he's pretty far down the list.

Idk, since racism against black people was the primary motivation of the villain, it seemed pretty appropriate to have at least one white character that wasn't a douchebag who could connect with the protagonists and serve as a symbol that it's not impossible for the "colonizers" to respect the autonomy of Wakanda. If the movie wasn't about racism, then I agree that the role wouldn't have been necessary (at least not as played by a white dude - you'd probably still need someone to act as a representative for the outside world though).

I don't think he is, particularly. It all started with a lot of tumblr SJWs not understanding British slang and humorous sarcasm, b/c heaven knows the only culture that exists is American culture, and snowballed downhill from there because confirmation bias.

The problem is that they made the "one white character that wasn't a douchebag" an actual CIA agent - the movie even has Killmonger's strategy being a direct result of CIA training - without really making any real attempt to engage with the moral ramifications of his being a CIA agent and the CIA being kind of, you know, awful.

I get what you're saying in principle, but if that was their intent, I don't think they succeeded at all.

I thought they were sort of intentionally trying to conflate it? Like the white guy (forget the character's name) isn't a great human being, but when push comes to shove, he tries to do the right thing. The fact that he's a CIA agent has a lot to do with why no one wants to trust him right away. But yeah, I don't remember, they probably didn't explore it as much as they could've. Then again, exploring it would've required more white guy screen time...

But more than that, I suppose they just needed someone in some kind of profession that made them useful for plot purposes, i.e. able to participate in combat scenes and able to share intelligence about Killmonger/other overworld plot elements (either with the audience or the other characters) - ergo, CIA agent. Joe Schmoe off the street would have required even more camera time to justify.

I think it was good in a way that he (Killmonger) was CIA. The way I see it is that he recognized it was/is a dirty organization (to say the least) and he uses them as much as they used him. They gave him "license to kill " and he trained, learned, and became a dangerous operative. He used them and he would eventually turn on them too (I highly doubt that he failed to recognize the CIA as a major oppressor/instigator) which is why they had to get rid of him and sent Friedman's character (among other reasons ie collecting intel on Wakanda).There's something to be said about using institutions that have been historically against you for their own detriment and your gain. But maybe I'm reading too much into it.

But his acting has improved lately and he does look less odd than when he was younger.

I'm sure a lot of actors are assholes, but I sort of feel like maintaining a positive public persona is part of being an actor. Like, it's on the list of job responsibilities. Your brand and image is so important. If I know someone's a dick irl, I will never buy their acting, it takes me right out of a movie.

I didn't see him as a hero in this one. I mean, he helped, but mainly he was used as comic relief. He was always out of his depth and two steps behind everyone, he also didn't look or act as cool as anyone else. He's like Spider-man's Ned, at least to me.
