I think that's being deliberately obtuse.

Someone born female portraying a young trans male teenager in the process of figuring it all out is way different from someone portraying a 40-something mobster.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-21 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Still trans.

Don't get me wrong, I hope they find a trans male actor to play the role. I just think the backlash was over the top.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-21 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
i agree that there was a lot of backlash, but i do have to wonder if two or three calm reactions would have really... done... anything?

(Anonymous) 2018-07-21 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Did ridiculously over-the-top backlash really do anything useful? Sure, the mostly cis tumblr purity brigade is all over the idea that it's better for trans people's stories to never be told than to be told less than perfectly, but what does that actually accomplish?

I’m just going to object to “mostly cis.”

(Anonymous) 2018-07-21 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
"cis" itself is an objectionable term.

It's true though.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-21 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
"Entirely cis" seems statistically unlikely, but your objection has been registered.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-22 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
The population is overwhelmingly cis in general, why would Tumblr be any different?

There's a difference between 2018 and 1999

(Anonymous) 2018-07-21 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay.

IIRC people knew it was at least a bit fucked up in 1999.

But yeah, we can def. do better now.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-22 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
(Transman here) I was going to say this too. Boys Don't Cry is a product of its time, and while I was a wee smol bean (9 years old and sheltered) at the time, there weren't a lot of openly trans people in the world who weren't shunned or ridiculed. We've come so far in the nearly 20 years since then-- let this movie reflect that, and I hope it can be the film that gives a transman his break into Hollywood the way Boys Don't Cry did for Hilary Swank.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-21 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
'boys don't cry' is an important movie, and it was very progressive for its time, but it has been two decades, and we can expect more progress now.

+1

We can agree that things could have been done better if the culture of the time had allowed it without erasing how important and progressive for the time something was. This kind of thing always makes me think of purity brigaders rallying against the Rocky Horror Picture Show without any knowledge of its history or importance to drag and queer communities over the years.

And we're having those conversations about both Boys Don't Cry and RHPS. One key factor is that in 2018 we've had a solid decade of cis people doing trans roles as an easy in for awards nominations.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-22 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
Even drag shows are getting accused of being "trans-face" or "woman-face" by those groups these days, it's insane.

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2018-07-21 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
There's already been a lot of thoughtful critical discussion, including by the director of this film that it probably would be done differently today.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-22 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
With that director attached it's probably best if the project goes on the backburner and someone else picks it up later.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-22 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
It makes sense to have a trans person play a post-op character, but it doesn't make sense to bar actors who don't identify as trans from trans roles. Gender identity is a personal and internal thing, not an externally present trait. Maybe ScarJo or whoever has identified as a guy at some point in her life, you'd have no idea.

I get giving more roles to people who have actually transitioned, don't get me wrong. But there's also nothing wrong with non-transitioned bodies playing non-transitioned characters.

What do people think about Glenn Close in 'Albert Nobbs'?

(Anonymous) 2018-07-22 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't be surprised, considering the internet lynch mob mentality nowadays.
