I think that's being deliberately obtuse.

Someone born female portraying a young trans male teenager in the process of figuring it all out is way different from someone portraying a 40-something mobster.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-21 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Still trans.

Don't get me wrong, I hope they find a trans male actor to play the role. I just think the backlash was over the top.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-21 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
i agree that there was a lot of backlash, but i do have to wonder if two or three calm reactions would have really... done... anything?

(Anonymous) 2018-07-21 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Did ridiculously over-the-top backlash really do anything useful? Sure, the mostly cis tumblr purity brigade is all over the idea that it's better for trans people's stories to never be told than to be told less than perfectly, but what does that actually accomplish?

I’m just going to object to “mostly cis.”

(Anonymous) 2018-07-21 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
"cis" itself is an objectionable term.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-21 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not. How on earth is it objectionable.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-21 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
To support the idea of "cis" you have to agree that brains have a gender, which isn't true.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-21 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
How... does that follow. At all.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-22 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT
I can see the logic in what the AYRT is saying? Cis is a chemistry term that means that two things align on the same side, while trans means that the two are on opposite sides and thus don't align. So if you are saying that someone is cis or trans, that means that there is an "expected" way for gender to line up, and if it does you are cis, and if it doesn't you are trans. Whereas I think this person would advocate for a more fluid gender description rather than a binary? I can't say for sure, as I'm just going off of their posts here, but it's what makes sense to me.

Like the other person said, trans supposes the person has a male/female brain born in a female/male body. Cis assumes male/female brain born in male/female body. However, the brain does not have a gender. I don't accept the term cis as I would have to agree that the brain has a gender.

No, to 'support' the idea of cis, you have to support the idea that bodies have a sex which is true. Jesus Christ, we are biological creatures, and biologically we have TWO sexes because as a species we practice biologic sexual reproduction. Making some sort of verbal allowance for those whose --for whatever reason--don't identify with their biologic sex--is only reasonable and enlightened as a species. Sitting there claiming that humanity as a whole isn't split into two sexes is--this is basic science and biology! Look, fight about gender all you want, but humanity is a two-sex sexually reproducing species.

Bollocks. It's merely descriptive.

what word do you think should be used instead?

(Anonymous) 2018-07-22 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
Man or woman. If you are trans, you are a trans man or trans woman.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-22 06:56 am (UTC)(link)
But that's positing "man" and "woman" as a default of sorts and "trans" as something separate from those basic units. Cis, on the other hand, works as a modifier the same way trans does, which keeps one from feeling more like a default than the other, you dig?

(Anonymous) 2018-07-22 11:50 am (UTC)(link)
Trans is not a default though, it is a very small part of the population. I trans man/woman can never be the same as a “cis” man/woman.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-21 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
It's true though.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-21 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
"Entirely cis" seems statistically unlikely, but your objection has been registered.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-22 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
The population is overwhelmingly cis in general, why would Tumblr be any different?

(Anonymous) 2018-07-22 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
Can't speak of all of it, but fandom tumblr has a lot of legitmate, not in a demeaning way, autism. Autism and gender identity disorders have been shown to be comorbid to an extent. This doesn't make their transness less legitimate or anything, but does explain why it's more prevalent.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-22 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
I'd say it has less to do with autism and more with teenage exceptionalism. You have kids who are actually strictly trans and will be trans long term, being shadowed by kids who "feel like a girl and a boy" or "don't feel like either" or "are sort of trans" because they are a girl who doesn't like stereotypically girly things.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-22 04:33 am (UTC)(link)

the horror... the horror...

(Anonymous) 2018-07-22 05:51 am (UTC)(link)
I'm 28 and I still don't know my sexual identity, but I've seen people who claim to have had it figured out at 5. Their experience doesn't invalidate mine.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-22 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
Or maybe the rate of transness in the background population would be higher if it were socially acceptable
