He was by far the weakest link in the film. Absolutely dreadful.

He sounded like he was singing through a snorkling tube lmao

When you listen to other adaptations' versions of Look Down and then the 2012 one....

(Anonymous) 2018-07-27 08:17 am (UTC)(link)
Thing is, he has such a great speaking voice, it's a shame his singing lacked any power at all. He was not a bad Javert until he'd start singing in that utterly lame voice.

lmao russel crowe the asshole can't understand the character who made a major discovery that he had been doing wrong his entire life.

Not being mean to you, OP, it's just really shocking to see how far out their Russel Crowe's mindset is, or how little he cared about the story itself. It's like seeing someone fail an empathy test on the most basic stuff.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-27 08:20 am (UTC)(link)
I don't understand if you're saying OP is dumb for believing this is true or if you're saying Russell Crowe actually is an asshole??

(Anonymous) 2018-07-27 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
ayrt says "russel crowe the asshole" and doesn't use the word "dumb" even once. Their typing is not the best, but I don't think it's that confusing?

(Anonymous) 2018-07-27 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
The anon being referred to here: yeah this is it! Thank you anon for defending me here.

I wanted to laugh at Russel Crowe, but was concerned about if OP would think I'm directing their laughter at them so I tried to clarify that I'm only laughing at how Russel Crowe, the person of immense shit-itude who beat an innocent person on the head with the corner of a phone, doesn't even have the emotional capacity to understand a character who felt bad about doing something wrong.

I've never seen this but I'm not a fan of his in general. I feel like he's been miscast more than once...take Robin Hood, for example. At least he didn't sing in that one, though!

I didn't mind him but then I'm also not a diehard Les Mis fan. I even liked "Stars" quite a bit, but that was all because of the instrumentation, no thanks to Crowe.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-27 08:29 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not a diehard fan, either, but once you've heard Philip Quast or Roger Allam or almost anyone who played Javert on an actual stage...hearing Russell Crowe mangle those beautiful songs hurts in more ways than one.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-27 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I liked him but I am like....super tone deaf so that might be why.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-27 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
They should have cast Taylor Swift.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-27 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
If they did that, I'd jump into the goddamn Seine.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-27 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
lol...

(Anonymous) 2018-07-27 08:24 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, they should have re-made the musical with all-female cast, Taylor Swift definitely should have been one of them. She can sing better that Crowe in any case

(Anonymous) 2018-07-27 11:02 am (UTC)(link)
If everyone who sang better than Russel Crowe got cast in a musical, It would be wall to wall musicals covering the globe. If it was restricted to the people who also sang better than Taylor Swift, the musicals would cover everything but Australia.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-27 11:17 am (UTC)(link)
lol!

(Anonymous) 2018-07-27 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL!

(Anonymous) 2018-07-27 07:27 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, I can logically write down why he did, that doesn't mean I understand it. There's a disconnect there.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-27 08:59 am (UTC)(link)
See, I can't understand anyone not understanding it? Like, if you watch Quast perform "Javert's Suicide", he understands the character perfectly (he might be a bit more mad/aggressive than book!Javert, but it's theater, after all). With Russell Crowe you can tell he doesn't get it, this character's entire worldview has been shattered and he doesn't show it in any way at all.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-27 12:41 pm (UTC)(link)
That's like 'Acting 101'. o_O Understanding the character you're playing. I mean, how can you even hope to portray a character with any kind of accuracy, if you don't understand them?

(Anonymous) 2018-07-27 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, he's not exactly a method actor, is he

(Anonymous) 2018-07-31 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
But technical actors also try to empathize with their characters. They just do it differently than method actors.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-27 12:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Also his decision to have Javert pin his medal onto Gavroche as a foreshadowing of Javert's decision to commit suicide (his own words) indicates he does not understand Javert one bit. While the moment was sweet and heartbreaking, Javert did not think about killing himself until he was on the bridge, contemplating everything that has happened and finding that he could not go on.

Wort Javert ever.
