I don't know what Voltron is (I mean, obviously I know it's a show, but that's where my knowledge ends), but from the secrets on here, the fandom seems unusually toxic, what gives?

IDK if there's an explanation beyond random chance (and the fact that it's an anime-style Western cartoon, which seem to have consistently bad fandoms for what are probably demographic reasons)

Like, it's not like it's a bad fandom in a fundamentally new way, it's just bad in the same way that bad fandoms are usually bad but somewhat more so

A combination of:

1. ugly shipwars,
2. 2/3rds of the main cast are teens,
3. bad interpretations of canon through ship goggles leading to batshit conspiracy theories about secret canon coding, and
4. pushing ships as canon for the sake of LGBTQ representation.

So it's a situation ripe for justifying ship wars by framing the other side as homophobic or pedophiliacs.

American anime shipwars tend to be nasty due to the combination of baby's first shipwar, creators' media presence being more accessible to English speaking fans than anime, and the type of nerds who get into this sort of thing.. This one is especially bad compared because of wank masquerading as social justice, the increasing amount of entitlement present in fanbases, and the migratory slash fandom latching hard on to it.

I was going to snark about how creators say a lot of shit about LGBTQ characters at cons but never follow through with it, but apparently it's a part of episode 7.01 which has already been screened.

Technically his orientation is "attracted to men." In an interview they clarified that bi/pan Shiro is also okay.

This fandom is so weird. I was pretty excited about the announcement, so I dipped my toes back in? Big freaking mistake. It's all "THIS IS PROOF THAT LANCE IS BI! KLANCE WILL BE CANON!!!" ...it's like, guys, can't we take one second to be happy for the rep we got before... well, kinda shoving him back in the closet?

Is this by the people who created Avatar/Korra or no? If so, I guess there's a history of LGBT inclusion, which is really neat, especially for a younger-targeted cartoon.

I actually think it's cool, even if it's just a matter of creators realizing they have a lot of slash fans. Anything that gets canon queerness up in there.

This is going to sound angry but I don't care. People like you are the exact reason I can't stomach even the mention of this show now. I didn't ship anything (heaven forbid apparently) and all the fan content I ever saw was people at each others throats over some fucking fictional bullshit. It's exhausting. It completely ruined the show for me. You are the exact toxic fandom that you probably complain about.

Most of the Klance shippers I know take it as a given that Lance will also be revealed to be gay and will get together with Keith, and that Shiro will hook back up with his ex once they've returned to Earth. Not sure where you're finding the angry ones.

Are they? Because from what I've seen, they're treating Shiro as a stepping stone for bi Lance, and think that Shiro will help Lance realize his sexuality, and that Lance and Keith will get together, so they're actually pretty happy about it.

Even Lance's VA saying that bi Lance is not canon didn't stop them.

I am not saying the Klance shippers are wrong, I actually have a few Klance shippers on my flist and we are able to coexist in complete and utter harmony-- they understand that I like Sheith and I am fine with them shipping Klance. I've lucked out in that respect. However I have been in fandom enough to have seen things, I've been around during the whole Fruits Basket debacle where Akito turns out to be a woman (GASP SHOCK HORROR) or the rabidity that was the whole FMA fandom in general with Roy/Ed fans pitting against everybody and the world.

Fortunately fandom passes and calms down-- the truly rabid Klance shippers will still see their ships as canon and damn everything else. There is no talking reason or sense into them and there's no point in it. The most that anyone can do is school them on not being an utter asshat-- but that will come in time (hopefully)

In my mind yes, I ship Sheith, but I realize that Shiro is the only canonical gay character and I'm perfectly fine with that. Great on the series for actually representing, it's very heartening.
