I mean, part of it probably is or they wouldn't publicize the fact that they go, but... meh. I can't be bothered by that anymore than people who publicize other charitable acts. As long as they're still doing those charitable acts and people are benefiting, brag away. Maybe it'll encourage other people to be charitable too.

Yeah

there's a million publicity stunts out there, and at least these ones are nice things to do for people who deserve it, and on the the actors side I assume they're probably mostly sincere and are there because they want to help

(Anonymous) 2018-07-29 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Most of the time they are publicized by people they meet taking photos and such.

Who cares? I have never cared why someone is doing something good. "Oh, this person is only donating a million dollars to ________ for the publicity." Good. You think the people being helped by that money/time/awareness is going to go, "Well, we refuse this money because you only want attention!" If it makes more rich people help others, I will pat them on the back and buy them a cookie.

It's an issue if they're only helping in a really superficial way, or distracting attention from more sustained or meaningful or helpful engagement. But yeah, IA that it's not really bad in itself.

It's like a lot of those "breast cancer awareness" foundations - yes, breast cancer is a serious issue, and cancer research is important, but many of those groups don't actually contribute much money or progress towards actual breast cancer research, and instead spend the money on "awareness" and publicity and stuff like that.

I can't really blame a celebrity for going with the wrong group (like Susan Komen). Plenty of non-celebrities do it as well.

I agree... ultimately, if it isn't hurting anyone, who cares? Regardless of who the person is or their reasons for doing something, it shouldn't take away from the message or act.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-29 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
What if the reason that someone is doing charity IS to hurt other people

It is on some level tbh, but the kids seem to really enjoy it so I'm not about to dunk on anyone that does it. Plus it's more than I manage charity-wise since I just donate to a few charities and that's it.

Of course it is. But it makes kids happy so... does it matter that much?

(Anonymous) 2018-07-29 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
If a celebrity is visiting a specific kid in the hospital, it's probably because the kid (or their family or the hospital) asked the celebrity to do that, because the kid is a fan.

I think this kind of thing happens all the time without being publicized much. We may hear about it when it's an MCU star or Gal Godot, especially if they go in costume, but think about all the athletes and Star Trek/Wars actors who must do this? I remember watching something about Star Trek where Kate Mulgrew mentioned that if she gets a call about a kid in a hospital, she tries to go if she can because she knows the kid won't be there next time. I certainly don't remember any publicity about "Captain Janeway" visiting sick kids. Also, social media probably creates a lot of the publicity. 30 years ago you would need a news crew present if you wanted your visit to be on the news. Now people post pictures to the internet and news outlets pick up on it and broadcast the images originally posted to social media.

It's not cynical to think that it's a publicity stunt. It is cynical to think that it being a publicity stunt somehow negates the fact that someone brought some joy to a sick or dying child. Looking back at all the things that celebrities do to call attention to themselves, the world would be a much kinder place if more of them went the route of cheering up sick kids.

Even if it is...so long as it makes some kids (who have probably been through a lot already) happy I don't mind.

Though a lot of actors in the MCU seem to genuinely love their characters so I don't feel it's completely hollow in this example anyway.

It isn't usually the actual guys who do the publicizing of it, but also, who cares if it is? Those kids need things like that. And it isn't just celebrities that are 'good enough', anyone can spend their time doing it.

I looked through the comments after I typed but before I hit send, and it seems like what I said has already been covered, but here it is anyway.

I'm probably the only person who feels this way but I wish some celebrities would visit sick adults in the hospital too.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-30 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Some do! A friend of mine who was terminally ill got a visit from a major pop star who was touring in our country at the time, unpublicised. She was so happy.

We've had a number of celebs visit the Veteran's Hospital where I worked over the years.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-30 09:45 am (UTC)(link)
It happens. As far as I can tell it's generally veterans' hospitals and usually the Stanley Cup.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-30 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
I wish you hadn't chosen this photo, OP, since both Chrises give their time and attention to their favorite charities even without publicity.

I think that publicity was actually the point.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-30 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
There was a bet between Pratt and Evans and then the other would have to show up in costume at a hospital in the other's city and I think at the end they both showed up at both. But the whole point of them publicizing the bet and the outcome was to get people to pay attention and maybe donate, which is often times why celebrities do publicize things. Yes, some do it only for their personal PR, but a lot of times putting a celebrity near a cause or charity gets people to donate and celebrities know this. I can't see that as a bad thing.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-30 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
You know you're in trouble when your favourite star visits you in hospital.

(Anonymous) 2018-07-30 07:53 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, keep in mind the kid undoubtedly asked for this photo and it's probably shared by the family, not the celeb?

(Anonymous) 2018-07-30 08:49 am (UTC)(link)
My sister works in a childrens ward. They get visits semi frequently (most of the really sick kids are sent to GOSH, so they dont havethe great photo op kids) they usually get visits from pop stars or reality stars... no publicity no fuss. Just here they are, she has turned away at least one because she wasnt family and the visit wasnt planned! Lol
