Fandom gripes

Got a gripe, a complaint, a rant, an issue? Let us hear it!

There is so. Much. A/B/O fic in my fandom. Thankfully most of it is tagged but its so frustrating when someone posts a link to a hot new fic (especially if it's fic of my OTP/OT3 and is rated explicit), and I click on the link and oh, it's more A/B/O, yet again. I'm glad the people who're into that have so much to choose from, but...I just want something sexy that ISN'T about that. :(

What fandom? I don't believe anyone who says this. Even Teen Wolf (which has canon alpha/betas/omegas) has a tiny amount.

I don't know if The Losers even has much of a fandom, but Jensen/Cougar ftw.

Does the genre of the source material or gender of the participants matter? Is there a particular dynamic your other ships share?

I'm so tired of the sappy stuff in my OTP tag. I get it, I do. I do think they are in love with each other and can be romantic to each other at times. But their villains, for crying out loud. They don't spend every waking moment doting on each other and going on romantic walks through the fortress. They scheme and plot. They murder. They torture. They conquer. Half the appeal of the ship to me is that the are so alike and have such a strong bond and can find romance in doing terrible things to everyone else.

I get that different people ship differently. I don't want to judge them. I just want to see more villain stuff in the tags and less "romantic walks through Angband" stuff, please.

I gotta be honest if that was presented as a crack!fic I'd absolutely read it because it sounds so absurd it could be amazing.

I'm writing fic again...

...unfortunately, it's RPG-character fic from a just released tabletop game.

In my fandom, discussions are either huge or crickets. And it's only huge for the newest installment and because it attracts trolls. Real discussion is non-existent. But everyone's bitching about how my fandom is everywhere because of the trolls. In actuality, you can only get a few comments, if that, of real discussion. It feels like a small fandom.

Okay, this is only tangentally a fandom gripe, but my local library system (which I work for, shh) offers downloadable e/e-audio-books. Which is great. We’ve switched ebook subscription services a couple times, and one of the more recent is called Enki. Me being me, I recently went looking for Beauty and the Beast retellings. There are lots of decent-to-amazing ones out there. The ones on offer through Enki, though, are... not so great.

In fact, they suck so mightily I was briefly afraid the suction would pull me through my phone screen into a land of badly photoshoped covers and poorly written Phantom of the Opera ripoffs. My library is paying a company subscription fees for shitty fanfic. I’ve read a lot of Phantom of the Opera fanfic, and this isn’t the good stuff. One of the covers apparently involved someone photoshopping a stock model’s face to have a white bit around one eye for the “mask.” The writing was worse than the Photoshop job.

If I wanted bad Phantom of the Opera fanfic or generic “hot asshole is called Beastly for his behavior” romance novels, I’d go read them. I may as well go read good BatB, PotO, or Rumbelle fanfic instead.

I feel ya. My library used to have Overdrive but switched to Cloudlibrary. Bad photoshop everywhere.

It’s definitely not the majority opinion but I have seen one person trying to pull the “how can people ship Villanelle/Eve it’s soooo unhealthy and problematic!!!” thing in the Killing Eve fandom and that’s just. So ridiculous. I don’t know why they even watched the show considering it’s basically all about their relationship, and I hope they drop the fandom because I don’t want people like that in this fandom lol. Let me have this ONE canon dark femslash please.

... Did they even watch that show? What the hell? That may be the fandom where that sentiment makes the least amount of sense ever.

I found a fantastic artist who did great art for a problematic ship that I love, only to see that they'd been bullied out of the fandom months ago and now refuse to touch it again. DAMMIT, PEOPLE!

Re: Fandom gripes

People are fucking terrible. I feel bad for that artist.

Re: Fandom gripes

(Anonymous) 2018-08-09 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
All of my current ships are rarepairs. I haven't found a good fic for a pairing I ship in forever and it makes me sad. People always say "write it yourself!" but 1) it's not the same, and 2) I suck at writing. Also, because apparently no one else ships them there's no discussion, no fanart, no fan videos, no squeeing on Tumblr, nothing. :(

Re: Fandom gripes

(Anonymous) 2018-08-09 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
One of my favorite ships is a rarepair and it really bums me out that I can't find a lot of fic. I'm writing some fic for it now, but it's not as fun to write it as it would be to stumble upon it.

"[[Canon male/female friendship]] is mlm/wlw solidarity" is the Gay Tumblr counterpart to thinking every male and female character who are friends are actually in love with each other and I'm sick of it. First a man and woman can't be just friends without it turning into romance, now they can't be just friends unless they're romantically incompatible (because on tumblr "mlm" and "wlw" really means "gay," bi/pansexuality not included.)

I've got nothing against Reylo as a concept (I'm not into it, but you do you, folks) but I'm getting really tired of these Rey/Kylo ~*~*~*parallels~*~*~* to Anakin/Padme posts (image sets mostly) showing up in the Anakin tag.

Especially when they aren't even good parallels.

Come back, Suikoden fandom... come baaaaaaaaack.

I guess it would help to have a new game (fat chance, after six years of radio silence) but I miss the fangirling.
