(Anonymous) 2018-08-14 04:29 am (UTC)(link)On the other hand, her sister was barely around but showed strong character/principles and had a heroic sacrifice. There wasn't much there, but there wasn't anything to dislike and there was potential. So I definitely preferred her to Rose. It has absolutely nothing to do with appearances.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-14 06:45 pm (UTC)(link)Yes, by not letting him sacrifice his life.
As i said to the other anon, He was set to make a heroic sacrifice to help save others. Finn wasn't a depressed person wanting to commit suicide because of a potentially skewed view of the world, and thus someone in need of intervention. As far as I can remember (I only saw the movie once), he was thinking clearly and decided this was the best option for the good of everyone, and then he had that choice taken away from him.
And as dreamingofcats said, it's not like her plan was foolproof. They easily both could have died because of what she did, and in that case the death(s) would have served no purpose. And it's not like she had a better plan than Finn's for helping everyone else. Yeah, his plan required his death, but how many rebels have died over the years as sacrifices to the cause and to help others succeed? It sucks for him and people who care for him, but it was a valid choice he made.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-14 06:40 pm (UTC)(link)No? My favorite character is Rey. Followed by Leia. (Although if we count all of the movies, not just the latter trilogy, Leia might top Rey.) And how am I misinterpreting Rose taking away Finn's agency? He was set to make a heroic sacrifice to help save others. She could have killed him by crashing into him, and that death (or those deaths if she had died as well, which was entirely possible) would have then served no purpose. What am I missing according to you?

(Anonymous) 2018-08-14 09:44 am (UTC)(link)So... for me it's more like he and Rose speak the same sort of "love language" that includes making those kinds of calls for your loved ones, whether or not they agree, and while I wouldn't want it in a partner, there is a sort of symmetry or a sense that they have the same values or ideas about how relationships work to it for me. (I also still sorta want Rey to find out that Finn nearly screwed the galaxy, and Rey's own stated allegiances, over TWICE in order to "save" her, and lose her shit at him. Bonus points if Rose finds out at the same time that the friend Finn was trying to save is the last Jedi and might have been willing to agree with that priority--- save the last Jedi to fight another day--- as opposed to just deserting to save his random friend and is also losing her shit over that.)

(Anonymous) 2018-08-14 06:35 pm (UTC)(link)Uh, where did I ever say, or even imply, that? No, I dont agree with anyone actively taking away anyone else's agency. Male or female. I didn't go into my thoughts on Finn because the secret wasn't about him, it was about Rose. But thanks for trying, I guess?

(Anonymous) 2018-08-14 06:32 pm (UTC)(link)Did I say I liked Finn? I don't particularly care for him either. I don't see the rescue attempt as such a bad thing, given what goes on in this world. I do hold him accountable for "then he tried to take the homing beacon away from the Resistance to "protect" her" though. I do give him a little tiny bit more leeway than Rose because it wasn't even that long ago that he wasn't even a person, bit was rather a number, a cog in the machine of the Empire. So it's not like he has a lot of experience with people and nuances of social situations. But, again, he is not a favorite character of mine. I just didn't go into what I thought of him as the secret was about Rose.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-15 01:07 am (UTC)(link)I... don't think I said anything about whether or not you liked Finn. Though given how ubiquitous I've found liking Finn to be, I'm not surprised you thought I thought you did! (In fact, yay for finding someone else who doesn't count him among their favorites!)
Your comment about Rose taking Finn's agency did nicely clarify a big piece of what has been bugging me about Finn and Rey starting in TFA, versus why I kind of like Finn and Rose with each other so I thought I'd share.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-15 01:54 pm (UTC)(link)Oh, I read in your post something like the first anon felt, where it seemed like you were saying that both Finn and Rose took away someone else's agency, but I liked Finn but disliked Rose because Finn was a guy. The "Well see it totes doesn't count when a male character takes away the agency of a female character because it's for her own good doncha know!"
I must have let the other anon's comment color my feelings and thus my response. I appreciate the clarification. I can see where you are coming from with the pairing. I just give Finn a bit more leeway, so while I don't want Rose with anyone, I could maybe see Finn growing such that I wanted him with someone. (I don't have a pairing for him atm.)
Out of curiosity, if you still read this as it is a very late comment), who do you pair Rey with? If anyone? I usually pair up my favorite characters, but I don't really have a potential pair for her, as I dislike both Finn and Kylo as options.
