Her sister was prettier and had a more interesting action sequence, unfortunately. I don't think that makes her a better character, but the comparison doesn't necessarily do Rose any favors.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-14 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Only if those are the standards that you choose to embrace for what makes a character good.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-14 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sure there would be less complaints about Rose if she was hot, but even then they would still exist. Most of the critism is still legit, and people are willing to go as far as to say she's worse than Jar Jar Binks.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-14 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Not all of the criticism of her is sexist or racist, true. But even most of the "legit" criticism is still really stupid.

How could she POSSIBLY be worse than Jar-Jar?

Since this new trilogy is the only ones I've seen (I really did try with the original 3 but just couldn't make it) I don't think she's a bad character? She's a little bland, but so are some of the others'. Plus I think she's kind of adorable looking.

You can't say "most of the criticism is still legit" and then cite "worse than Jar Jar" as an example. That is another classic disingenuous argument, just like the one in the secret. They aren't made in good faith.

IA, but who is the model-turned-actress? Billie??

No, the chick who played Rose's sister in the beginning of TLJ, apparently.

Rose was boring (and as far as I can think of had no intended real flaws) while her sister never had the screentime to be much of a character, so yeah, it's a bad argument. Just from her tragic heroics I can still say I liked Paige better.

(Anonymous) 2018-08-14 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
Full disclosure: I once tagged a post of Rose/Paige with the tag "they killed the wrong sister" about a week before Kelly Marie Tran was hounded off Instagram and FUCK do I feel guilty about it (obviously my post wasn't directed at her, it was just a tag on my Tumblr which is followed by about twelve people, but still...)

That said, I can see why some might prefer one sister over the other: the fact that Paige died so quickly yet so bravely gives a viewer more scope for imagination. It was such a powerful, dramatic scene. By comparison, I never really got much from Rose, and Rian Johnson's explanation that he just came up with her because he needed someone for Finn to bounce off of when he went to the casino helped make sense of that.

As someone who is constantly stanning allllll the barely on-screen, usually tragic characters, I really do get it. But I'm not going to claim that my minor-ass snookum and the mountain of headcanon I made up for them are better than what the writers actually came up with, even if what they came up with is not to my liking.

I love most female characters and can overlook a lot when dealing with them, but I really didn't care for Rose. She wasn't a favorite throughout the movie, and then I hated when she took Finn's agency away from him at the end by ignoring what he wanted to do and making his decisions for him.

On the other hand, her sister was barely around but showed strong character/principles and had a heroic sacrifice. There wasn't much there, but there wasn't anything to dislike and there was potential. So I definitely preferred her to Rose. It has absolutely nothing to do with appearances.

By not letting him sacrifice his life?

For real?

Translation: I willfully misinterpret events in the movie to suit my warped vision, and prefer women when they are barely around and don't do anything I might "dislike".

Next.

Normally I would agree with you--- except that in Finn's case, that is the exact same thing he did to Rey, twice: namely, he knew how much she admired the Resistance (enough to lie to her about being one of them in order to impress her, which could have possibly gotten her killed, because walking onto a Resistance base in the company of a former stormtrooper when you think he's one of their comrades... well, let's hope the Resistance fighters don't take a page from their general's husband's book and shoot first), but he nearly screwed up the Resistance mission against Starkiller Base to try to rescue her (when she didn't need it), and then he tried to take the homing beacon away from the Resistance to "protect" her (which, again, she didn't need and in fact she ended up saving them).

So... for me it's more like he and Rose speak the same sort of "love language" that includes making those kinds of calls for your loved ones, whether or not they agree, and while I wouldn't want it in a partner, there is a sort of symmetry or a sense that they have the same values or ideas about how relationships work to it for me. (I also still sorta want Rey to find out that Finn nearly screwed the galaxy, and Rey's own stated allegiances, over TWICE in order to "save" her, and lose her shit at him. Bonus points if Rose finds out at the same time that the friend Finn was trying to save is the last Jedi and might have been willing to agree with that priority--- save the last Jedi to fight another day--- as opposed to just deserting to save his random friend and is also losing her shit over that.)
