Captain Marvel Trailer came out.

(Anonymous) 2018-09-18 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I am very whelmed.

But at least I know why every picture of her release so far has her with fists. It seems to be a theme.

Netflix is doing a Live Action Avatar the Last Airbender series

So, Elementary had the season finale. (Possible spoilers in thread.)

(Anonymous) 2018-09-19 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
I was not expecting that. I no longer know what to think about Gregson, but Sherlock stepped up in a big way. I'm still blinking at little at the end. Next season should be very interesting.

A question for Tolkien fans...

What other fantasy do you like? Do you enjoy other old school British fantasy like Susan Cooper? How about Akan Garner? Any modern fantasy? Tell me what you guys like!

I like all kinds of fantasy, it is purely the best genre

Re: A question for Tolkien fans...

(Anonymous) 2018-09-18 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I can honestly say I have not found another fantasy book, standalone or series, that I like anywhere near as much as Tolkien. And not for lack of trying, recs, etc.

The only thing I'll even admit to having read is Harry Potter, the rest ranged from forgettable to actually ending a friendship over the shitty rec.

I haven't actually read that much fantasy. The similarities I have are for things like Beowulf and Arthurian Romances.

I don't really do the big multi-novel epics anymore, I'm more into the shorter-form mythics and fairy tale inspired stuff in novella and novelette, although I'm keeping a slot open for Jeminsin's "City Born Great." Currently JY Yang is on my must-read list for queer silkpunk.

A lot of my favorite fantasy these days is contemporary-set without being either "urban" or "magical realism". Tim Powers and James Blaylock are really big for me, same with Lisa Goldstein - that whole slightly surreal, slightly ghostly, slightly hippy-ish California vibe really does it for me. Little, Big by John Crowley falls into the contemporary category as well, and is one of my favorite books I ever read, it's absolutely beautiful. I also love Gene Wolfe, RA Lafferty, and Avram Davidson, who all fall approximately halfway into this category, and are all extremely weird and goofy and I like them a lot.

The other kind of fantasy that I gravitate towards is sort of adventurous, and highly-colored, and romantic, and nice. So stuff like Patricia McKillip, who I love. And I'd also include Caroline Stevermer, Lois McMaster Bujold, and Charles De Lint (it's a very rough, ad hoc category).

IDK. I don't really enjoy the big, multi-book epic series the way that I'm used to, and I'm also really bad at trying to keep up with "the new hotness" - so it's very catch as catch can. But I love the genre for sure.

The Nightrunner series. Apparently there's some drama over it because the author is a bit...out there, but I've enjoyed the books I've read (only the first three so far, but I know there was a big gap between the release of the first three and the others and the later ones are supposedly pretty different so maybe I won't like the later ones, IDK).

Other than that, I can't really get into most fantasy (other than like, urban fantasy with vampires and shapeshifters and ghosts, but not the LOTR type).

I will always love The Dark is Rising (much more than anything Tolkien, really).
Actually, I think it's time for an annual re-reading if it.

Re: A question for Tolkien fans...

Fantasy is a very schooled opinion for me, since every fantasy since Tolkien's time seemed to simply steal the people and place he took in creating his landscape.
Regardless of the myths and legends Tolkien built his stories from- most of what I see today are just Elf this, and Magic that, maybe a Dwarf here and there... Given that I love history and the beliefs that comes with it, I cant help but be exasperated by so many creators attempts to replicate a 'fantasy' setting by just taking from whats popular without any knowledge of what they're taking from.

I can't say I know any of the listed authors by name, but I'm basically in fear of looking at another creators name, only to find the same old garbage spewed by everyone else in this century;;
The most I'll play is Dragon Age, since I took the first game as such a joke, I could at least build my characters from that first impression... I don't doubt I make probably the worst decisions because of it- but at least I have fun all the while;;

I want to be able to love fantasy, but it's the lack of consistency that makes me think twice about it;;

I love Susan Cooper (and some Alan Garner if I'm in the right mood). They are so rooted in the 'real' world then given a slight twist and its magical/real all at the same time. I really enjoyed the Earthsea original trilogy but could not get on with that world beyond The Farthest Shore.

For me Tolkien is a category of all his own and is my first, last and always writer. If I had to lose every other book in the world ever, I'd be okay if I could keep LotR and Silm.
