...okay, I'm full of it. Maybe she means the two Dan/Laurie scenes. I thought those were pretty tasteful myself. The Black Dossier, on the other hand, definitely gets gratuitous with the porn, although there's a hilarious "Tijuana bible" of a certain classic novel that I think everyone over 18 should see. Hee.

I know I'm just adding to the plentiful comments here, but for what it's worth, I can see where you're coming from. If I were a character in TDK where the Joker were a real person, there is no way in hell that I would want to get within a mile of him. Especially in scenes like when he tortured and killed the Batman impersonator, he is frightening, disgusting, and deeply horrifying.

However, I strongly disagree that finding the character appealing in a safe fantasy space is similarly disgusting. As I'm sure you're aware, BSDM has a huge following, primarily practiced in ways that are safe, sane, and consensual. For people who find things like fear and exchange of control and power arousing (which I imagine describes a large portion of Joker fans, myself included), it is indeed possible to do so in ways that ultimately aren't degrading, don't set women back decades, aren't unsafe, and are really a lot of fun if you like that sort of thing. When people say they'd hit it, they don't usually mean the Joker as a person in real life, they mean the Joker as a fantasy character. Even if that fantasy sounds extreme and dangerous, if faced with the reality, I strongly doubt it would be anywhere near a shade of hot. Just as BDSM isn't abuse, isn't rape, isn't self-mutilation, fancying the Joker isn't wanting to really get your cheeks sliced open or a pencil through your chest.

I strongly recommend reading posts like BSDM 101 at Subversive Submissive (http://subversivesub.wordpress.com/bdsm-101/), which especially stresses the differences between fantasy and reality and the differences between BDSM and real life, and this story of being outed (http://bloodylaughter.com/label/attacked/page/2/) at A Place to Draw Blood Laughing, which gives a first-hand account of just how damaging and awful such negative comments can feel. Some food for thought, I hope.
