Got this idea from #8

(Anonymous) 2018-10-17 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I briefly wondered if the OP was religious. No idea either way, but what it made me wonder was this.

I've known fundamentalist, Bible Belt Christians who absolutely loved either Angel, Supernatural, both - or similar shows. And it always surprised me, because they were the same sort of Christians who took certain aspects of the Bible very much to heart, including, in at least one case, being against same-sex marriage and abortion. Wouldn't half the religious stuff in both shows be sinful? Or is it okay because it's fiction, whereas real-world things are, well, real world?

I know it's not the same thing, but I'm Catholic and I've always loved shows like Trinity Blood and Blue Exorcist that borrow elements from Catholicism. Why? I'm not exactly sure, but the coolness aspect is definitely a big part of it. Granted, I'm not a super observant Catholic and my parents definitely had a problem with me watching Trinity Blood back in the day because it had "witchcraft" or whatever.

Holy shit. Did I just make this post in a fugue state? For like the past week, I've been wondering why there has not been more like...protests around Supernatural. They gave God a sister and make him a shitty writer who is sort of a dick. They have portrayed Heaven and Hell somewhat ludicrously. The Devil is a silly dude who is sometimes an ally.

I think that if you're willing to think critically about those things, you're usually not also the kind of person to get mad about them.

Re: Got this idea from #8

(Anonymous) 2018-10-18 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
usually falls into one of two camps: those with critical thinking skills who know that fiction is fiction and not a reflection on their beliefs, and those who aren't actually familiar enough with their own religion and don't care to express religiosity despite offering a surface appearance of being good ol' god-fearin' Bible-thumpers.

and since you really can't tell just from how people act what they actually believe, you just gotta let them enjoy what they want to enjoy and deal with how to reconcile it with their beliefs their own way.

Re: Got this idea from #8

I don't expect logic or critical thinking from fundamentalist Bible Belt Christians. I'm not saying this to be a jerk here, it's just... I've found that's not really a common trait because if you thought things through critically, you probably wouldn't be a hardcore Bible thumper.

I can say this for Supernatural - it *literally* takes place in a universe that is separate from "ours". At one point, the Winchesters actually get thrown into "our" world, where they are actors named Jensen and Jared, etc.

SO it's reasonably acceptable that God, Heaven, Hell, etc, are the way they are on the show, ONLY IN THEIR WORLD, not in the real world. That's the logic I've seen used a few times.

Inspired by #6 - What's the weirdest sex scene you've seen?

In a TV show or movie. No fanfiction allowed because it'd be too eady, lol.

How do people actually enjoy Interview With A Vampire/Anne Rice's works?

(Anonymous) 2018-10-18 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
IWAV is literally unreadable, for a couple of glaring reasons:

- FUCKING NOTHING HAPPENS (which would be FINE if the characters were engaging, but they're NOT - also, not only is Lestat not engaging, he's fucking annoying).

-Too many descriptions of Paris/France (and all of the same parts of Paris/France)! After a while I felt like I was reading a guidebook. (This wouldn't be so bad if Anne Rice was actually good at writing descriptions, but nope, her prose stinks worse than a rotten durian.)

The book is drivel. Seriously how can people say they actually enjoyed this crap?
