Why?

Glee was an absolute cesspool of toxicity, holy shit. God save you if you shipped the "wrong" thing, or even liked certain characters. I was barely even involved and I still got death threats for having completely innocuous (and well-tagged) stuff on my blog.

I know one of the BNFs from that fandom IRL and I can confirm. Totally batshit.

Faberry? Or Klaine? 'Cause MAN both those ships had absolutely insane BNFs.

It was F/F stuff. I never watched the show.

Oh, lord, yeah, I remember that fandom. I wasn't really involved in it, either, myself-I just watched the show-but I remember reading comment sections for the show on TV Line and...yeow.

My sister, who's a big fan of the show (she's the one who got me watching it :p), hung out on some forums back in the day and she said the same thing about that fandom being batshit nuts.

It's a tie between Sherlock and Supernatural.

Supernatural. Between the tinhatters and the kink meme. It was a pretty terrible place.

SPN was batshit when I was briefly into it (late 2009, early 2010). Man, they really hated female characters. Then again, the show didn't seem to like them, either, so. And the J2 portion of the fandom was nuts.

To be fair, I think the show "hated them" because the fandom hated them. The fandom was always throwing up a fuss about any one who might get in the way of Wincest.

I mean did you see the pilot? There was a clear trend from the very beginning. The fridging, the madonna/whore dichotomy, etc.

Eh. They sort of had to kill at least two important people to get the ball rolling. The first had to be someone close to John. The second had to be someone close to Sam.

Listen, I understand the narrative function of fridging the two saintly women and juxtaposing them with a woman who killed her own children because her husband was cheating on her. But I'm still rolling my eyes, and you can't argue it sets a precedent that the show repeats over and over and over again.

Bleach was pretty awful, especially as a Ichigo/Rukia shipper who liked Orihime. That was not allowed, no sir.

SPN was probably the worst though as I actually got harassed out of that fandom due to jerky ex-fandom friends. (Fandom was nicer back then my fucking ass).

Hetalia was pretty bad - ship wars, racism/real life politics,, very cliquey, had a lot of bad behaved fans at cons, etc etc

Ironically the cliqueyness made it tolerable at times cause you would just interact with the fans of the same groups of characters as you, so you could avoid a good amount of wank that way

Hetalia was definitely something else. I remember people using real world events to justify their ships and somebody told me my ship was wrong because Canada and Lithuania weren't allies in real life or something. It was weird.

Star Wars. Hands down. And I went through the Harry Potter ship wars.

Probably Sherlock, for me. I mean, Harry Potter and Star Wars almost certainly reached far crazier heights of fan whack, but I managed to avoid most of that, whereas Sherlock (and good old 'there's a secret fourth episode that will make this not suck!!!') seemed to be such concentrated bullshit it was almost entrancing...

I loved - and still love - the Sherlock fandom for how much awesome fanfic and fanart it has to offer. But yeah, it went off the rails in such a major and protracted way, and the conspiracy-theory obsession that many fans had with TJLC was definitely bizarre and unnerving to observe.

I shipped Johnlock as hard as anyone, but I just never got on board with any of the TJLC stuff.

Nothing held a candle to Ever After High.

Between a bunch of kids who didn't know better and racists and Mattel being stupid as hell.
