Should I see a doctor?

[personal profile] philstar22 2018-12-20 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
So, at some point at work, I did something. No idea what. But now I can't turn my head or tilt it to the right without pain shooting down my neck/upper back/right shoulder.

I've put ice on it now that I'm home and taken some ibuprofen.

My question is, should I see a doctor. Google seems conflicted. One site said no unless it keeps hurting for 6 weeks. But another said yes. So I'm not really sure. As we're low on fund right now on account of many, many medical issues, I'd rather not see a doc if I don't have to. But being unable to move my head is a bit concerning.

You are young. It will likely just go away. I would just heat instead of cold. Likely a pulled muscle.

That makes sense. I thought ice for neck pain, though?

Does it feel swollen? Maybe use a combination to be safe. Ice reduces swelling. Heat relaxes muscles.

I guess I'm just not sure it is muscle. I've had torn muscles before. This doesn't feel like that. I'm thinking it is maybe tendon or a combination of both?

It's probably just a pinched nerve. I slept funny once and ended up with the same thing and it went away on its own after a week or two.

This has happened to me when I've slept funny or something. Second the heat pack, not ice pack, because it's probably a pulled/tense muscle issue. Ibuprofen is good.

I would say it depends on your age? Like, I literally pulled a muscle in my rib area so hard from SNEEZING while doing a plank that I thought I broke a rib.

And I've woken up and not been able to turn my head just because I slept the wrong way.

So I would add age+length of time it's been happening+any other symptoms (fever, rash, etc) where it could be something more than a pulled muscle.

thanks. I'm leaning towards pulled tendon right now. It doesn't feel exactly like muscle pain. Going to give it a few days. If it isn't better by Monday, I'll call my doc.

Can you move your head or does it feel like you can't move it past a certain point? If so, it could be Torticollis/wry neck, which is treatable so no worries.

Do you feel any lumps on your back? Have you been under a lot of stress? If so it could be knots caused by stress or a pinched nerve.

Heat and rest are your best choice. And if you can get someone to give you a massage to relax the muscles.

I actually had a deep tissue massage on Saturday. I'm wondering if the loosening of muscles helped me injure it. It feels more like tendon to me than muscle, though. I can move it, it just hurts a lot if I tilt it or turn it right or if I lean it back. And the pain is in my neck a little, but it is worse down into my shoulder.

When I had something similar happen I looked it up and it seemed to be a poor posture thing? Like I hunched my shoulders and neck and upper back forward because I spend a lot of time sitting and reading. At first I tried a couple of stretches meant to help with that, like trying to touch my elbows together behind my back and stuff, but it hurt even worse. So I took a couple ibuprofen and laid on a pack of frozen peas until I could move without yelping, and then tried again. By the next day it had stopped hurting, and I try not to slouch so much.

That makes sense. I've had a stressful few days at work, so I may have been sitting funny. And I had a massage on Saturday, so maybe loosening muscles that have been tight for a really long time made it easier to injure. I've got an ice pack on it right now. I'm going to bring a cushion for my work chair tomorrow so I can lean my head against it.

Sadly, this happens to me frequently for various and dumb reasons. Being able to turn it to a point but then no more because pain is a clear characteristic of a strain. Heat pad, ibuprofin, and look up stretches for back injury/back pain that target that area. You should be able to slowly and gently ease it and let it heal through those means, without needing a doctor unless it persists for at least a solid week. And even then they might just try to send you to a chiropractor rather than treat it with, you guessed it, painkillers and stretching.

A good rule of thumb to remember is ice for swelling or immediate injury, heat later.

Once I slipped on ice but caught myself before I fell, but I did something that made the side of my neck hurt really badly where it met my shoulder. I was on the way to work and had to endure a whole shift having to turn my whole body to look in another direction. I was in tears from pain by the time I got home.

I applied heat and it was mostly fine by the next morning.

Only worry if it persists for an extended time.
