[Dark on Netflix]

Can't agree, OP. Stranger Things is definitely overrated and I think a lot of its popularity is down to the look of the show and its 80s atmosphere. Dark has a very cool atmosphere, but that's kind of it. The people are very difficult to like and the plot is sort of pretentious.

I also would not recommend the English dub, it's terrible.

I LOVE Dark, and I don't mind subtitles.

Subtitles actually force me to focus on the show instead of screwing off on my phone and half-paying attention. One reason I really enjoy non-English programming on Netflix.

I honestly don't find these shows all that comparable beyond the surface elements. They both have some nostalgia factor, and they both have ensemble casts and sci-fi elements, but when it comes to narrative tonality and style, they're both very distinct, and very different from each other.

Personally I like them both, and I don't feel inclined to pit them against each other, any more than I feel inclined to pit, say, Mindhunter and The Alienist against each other because they both involve law enforcement, gruesome crime, and serial killers.

My hopes for S2 of Dark are that the show manages to hold together, and not unravel into chaotic nonsense under the weight of the narrative's sheer complexity.

My hopes for S3 of Stranger Things are that the creators can find a sense of narrative cohesion and purpose for the story - underpinnings that felt a little cobbled together in S2.

I love subtitles and I speak some German so I don't mind German media at all. But I just couldn't get into Dark. I watched the first episode and I had trouble keeping track of the characters, especially since some of the guys looked almost alike (at least to me.) Maybe someday I'll give it another try.

I liked Dark quite a bit, but I can honestly say I've never watched a show that required as much of my undivided attention as Dark did, in order to follow who was who, how characters were related, and what the hell was going on. It's not even that it's an incredibly intelligent show (though I would call it above average in that regard) - it's just an incredibly complicated show, structurally speaking.

I have this in my To Watch queue!

I loved Dark! I watched it with my sisters-- they didn't really care to get past two or three episodes of Stranger Things, but we devoured Dark and are hungering for more.

I'd like to get back to Stranger Things too, but it's just not as much fun to watch solo for me.

it's so weird to me to be bitter about "hype" instead of, like, the obvious prior of marketing budgets

I guess it's easier to be bitter at people you think you might be able to reach

I don't see a lot of similarities with Stranger Things, though I do wish Netflix would promote some more of their shows than they do. I guess there's just so many now that they can't afford to aggressively promote everything but a lot of the more niche stuff like Dark falls through the cracks.

Dark LOOKS amazing. Like... just amazing visuals in every episode. But the storyline is pretty heavy and convoluted and it's not a "fun" watch, you know? There are too many people doing awful things to one another and pretending to be good people on the outside and most of the interest is keeping the audience wondering WTF is going on. Whatever else you might say about the show, Stranger Things is a lot more accessible because it's simpler and has light hearted moments and more people are going to be into that.

But seriously, if you're trying to convince people to watch Dark, stop recommending the version that's dubbed. It's so terrible that it's kind of hilarious.
