No, I'm sorry, I'm chickening out

Oh come on, you’re anon. Considering some of the dumb shit myself and other anons have posted here over the years, I can’t imagine anything you could ask would be that bad.

No, you can't get pregnant from sitting in the same seat that a guy sat in.

Developing good study habits.

(Anonymous) 2019-02-14 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
I'm back in school after a few years and my bad habits are gonna whoop my ass if I don't do anything about it.

I'm real bad with procrastination and I'm pretty sure I have an internet addiction, if that's a legit thing. And I'm not sure how to curve it. I've tried leechblockers, setting up a study space, and the works, but I always fall back to my old habits. What should I do?

Re: Developing good study habits.

What works for me is trying to make everything as concrete and definite as possible. One of the big things with procrastinating, for me, is approaching studying or doing work as this big, amorphous Thing that I can't get a handle on and end up catastrophizing. So breaking stuff into very small, discrete tasks that I can knock out helps a lot. And so does finding ways to, like, turn the task into something physical - actually going and physically writing stuff down is extremely useful for me, like taking notes or whatever. Because I think for my brain, it makes it into a real, tangible thing.

That's what works for me but IDK if it would work for you.

Sorry to say, there aren't any magic tricks to it. You've tried the usual recommendations, but every single last one of them relies upon you sticking to what you know you should be doing. There aren't any tricks that are human-proof. You can try setting timers and seeing if strictly defined time limits help you keep on task, but in the end... you still have to develop better self-discipline.

If you can study without a computer, go to the library or a study room, or some non-distracting place (i.e. not a coffee shop) to study. Or bring the computer, but choose a place with no WiFi.

I always used to unplug the Ethernet cable when I was in college, but tgat doesn't apply now.

Break things into small chunks. Trying to force yourself to study for three hours all at once is a lot less effective than breaking the same amount of time in 15 or 20 minute sessions.

Experiment. Figure out how long your concentration lasts. (It may be different for different subjects or activities; I've done writing sessions of 45 minutes to an hour, but if I'm reading my eyes will start to glaze over at about 15 minutes.)

Reward yourself. Also get study buddies, if possible, to keep yourself accountable. It's easy to "forget" a study session in the privacy of your own room, but if someone is expecting you to show up at the library, it's a lot harder to blow off.

Fudge recipes?

[personal profile] rosehiptea 2019-02-14 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
So I made some fudge using this recipe:

https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/9368/fudge/

It turned out nasty. I don't know why.

I would like to make fudge with a relatively easy recipe but this stuff was not for me. (I like things really sweet if that helps.)

Pretty sure you don't need the butter in there and that may actually give you a weird texture. And doing it in a sauce pan on low to medium heat might be better, less tendency to scorch. The microwave can be fine, but stirring once or twice is not enough - I'd do it in 30 second bursts, stirring in between each time.

If you want really sweet, maybe do half milk and half semi-sweet, or substitute in some white chocolate or butterscotch chips, instead of all semi-sweet.

But if you want to elaborate on why you found it nasty, that might give me a little more to work with. Too bitter? Wrong texture? Weird flavor? Did it taste burnt?

It did seem bitter and the texture seemed too thick. It was also kind of lumpy, but that may come from not stirring enough, though I did it a little more than the recipe indicated. Also some of the butter wouldn't stir in. If I don't need it that will help.

I know a super easy fudge recipe! just melt together 18 oz semi sweet chocolate chips and a can of sweetened condensed milk and add nuts if you want them. Pour the whole thing in a wax paper lined small brownie pan and stick it in the fridge for a few hours.

Chef John is always good for recipes:
Vegan "Miracle" fudge:

"Hot Chocolate Stones" - you could always omit the spice:

Or just go super simple with the 2 ingredient type: semisweet chocolate and condensed milk:

What didn't you like about it? This is the one I use:

https://www.bakedbyrachel.com/easy-fudge/

Similar to the one you posted, but no butter. I use all semisweet chips. If you want chocolate mint fudge, you can use 1 tsp. vanilla and 1/2 tsp. peppermint extract.

It just didn't taste sweet. (Maybe that's more a matter of taste? I know I ate a bunch of fudge at work one Christmas that no one else wanted because they said it was too sweet.)

And the texture was wrong too - very dense and chewy, more like a chocolate bar than fudge.

I might have to experiment a little.

Buyer's agent?

(Anonymous) 2019-02-14 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
Has anyone ever used one for finding property? Was it worth it?

Re: Buyer's agent?

(Anonymous) 2019-02-14 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
I have, but it was years ago. It was someone who worked exclusively as a buyer's agent, so zero conflict of interest as they didn't sell houses. I found her to be really helpful because it was my first time buying a house and I knew nothing at all about the process. You definitely want someone to look out for your interests in a situation like this.

Thank you! That's exactly what I would like. I don't feel like I know enough so that I won't be taken advantage of.

I used one when I bought my house last summer. I found it very useful because I didn't know what I was doing. She would go with me to see houses and point out both good things and potential problems. At least where I live, the buyer's agent splits the commission with the seller's agent, so it didn't cost me anything to use a buyer's agent.
