Guy is a stalker or just generally creepy and doesn't take no for an answer, but that's okay because he loves her and she should totally end up with him in the end.

Yes. This not only needs to die, it needs to die while being mercilessly mocked.

I actually like this trope in villain/heroine ships, but I loathe it in romcoms where too often the woman is shown as needing to loosen up and have fun, or ditch her career goals, or break up with her (often presented as boring) S.O., which all also involve pairing up with a Nice, Spontaneous Manchild Stalker before she can be truly happy.

Extend this to also cover girls being stalkers and I'm right there with you.

Misogynist sitcoms fathers whose children love them and behave like non-traumatized people.

Re: If you could ban one movie/tv trope,

(Anonymous) 2019-03-09 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Is that a trope? Also, who is getting traumatized by that anyway? I guess it depends on the level of misogyny, but anything less than "you must only wear dresses, be home by 5pm, do all the chores/cook/etc, don't do anything 'smart' to turn off boys" doesn't really seem trauma worthy...

This is making me think of Bruce Willis' role in Friends, where he's playing the "protective" dad of the 19-year-old that Ross is dating. I mean, I wasn't a big fan of Ross for dating a student at the university where he was a prof, but the bottom line is that a 19-year-old gets to decide who they date and who they have consensual sex with. But Bruce Willis' character sure didn't think his daughter should have that right. And it was very much played as funny and "normal protective dad behavior."

Dumb husbands and nagging wives.

Misunderstandings which could be solved with a 2-minute conversation.

Professionals of some field (doctors, forensics experts, etc.) explaining to each other vocabulary or procedures that both should already know because writers can't think of any other way to clue in the audience.

Dumb characters annoying grumpy characters in a way that the audience is supposed to find funny (a la Spongebob and Patrick driving Squidward crazy).

Going off on anon above me, sitcoms that laugh off people's shitty behavior as a character quirk, especially if they are a parent/grandparent. It's worse when there's some conflict and it's on the child/grandchild to forgive and reconcile because faaaaaaaamily. I can stomach it if the offender has an epiphany (even though this isn't often realistic) and makes it up to the offended, but the offended tends to lose out and/or it's only a matter of time before the offender does something else awful because hahaha!

"Nice" guy or girl wins popular hottie as a prize for niceness. Usually after the "nice" person gets super mad about how popular hottie has never wanted to fuck them, and after explaining that they were only nice because they wanted to tap dat ass. For some reason having their free will judged by a manipulative creep is irresistible to popular hotties.

Man obsessively pursues his scientific curiosity or goals while his wife is almost villainized for thinking it's a bad idea or at least shouldn't take over his life, for perfectly practical reasons like needing him to have a job. Or not wanting to lose him to something dangerous and raise their children on her own, etc. He's always right because he makes some amazing discovery.

Dumb working dad with beautiful housewife in sitcoms.

Give the women jobs, dammit. Housewives are so ridiculously disproportionately portrayed in sitcoms, it's fucking ridiculous. Let's see a fat working woman with a slender bubble-butt stay-at-home-husband.

Not outright ban because it can work in some circumstances: but the idea that people need to forgive abusive/shitty family members because they're faaaaaaaaaaaamily, fuck that noise. If someone hurts you you do not have to forgive them and you are not a bad person for refusing to ever deal with them ever again, blood doesn't negate shitty behaviour.

Revenge stories where it's all about some macho manly-man dude going and killing a bunch of dudes for raping/murdering his wife/daughter/gf. And if you're gonna do the former at least have it be the victim going about dolling out the revenge.
