That awkward moment when....

Got an awkward moment? Post about it here!

Re: That awkward moment when....

Just generally people interrupting for help when I'm helping someone else. I never have a clue how to appropriately respond to that. And it happens all the time on my job.

"I'm just helping another customer, but I'll be with you in a moment." or direct them to the nearest person/service desk politely. :)

Tried that, doesn't work. The interrupter almost always believes their need is more urgent. And I'm the only person. Any other ideas?

Firm and polite. Big retail smile. Pre-emptively thank them for their patience and keep doing what you were doing. Then when you get back to them cut them off before they complain by again thanking them for being patient.

Most people won't argue with you if you tell them nice things about themselves.

Da

You have to take control of the situation. "I am currently with this customer now, and will be with you next." If they insist, YOU insist. "I am busy helping this customer at the moment, I will be able to help you when I am finished here." I get you tho, it's so fucking irritating to be interrupted like that with a "But I just want--" or whatever, like yeah we all forgot you're The Most Important Person On The Planet so let me just be rude to this other person who was here before your selfish ass and help you with your dumbassed problem.

Assertion. 'I will be with you as soon as a can, sir/ma'am'

Repeat as often as needed with a clear tone.

If they want to follow you around ranting fine. You smile and state to your customer 'I am so sorry about this but please follow me'

Customer B looks like the irate customer. Offer to report the situation to your manager and state 'I know, we often hope for more staff members but the budget...' or something similar. But always let the harpy rant.

Turn them against each other.

"Hey, customer A. Customer B feels their issue is more urgent than yours. Would you be willing to wait for Customer B?"

If A says yes, go help B. If A says no, just turn to B and shrug and direct them to A.

You. I like you.

Re: That awkward moment when....

(Anonymous) 2019-03-21 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Then get fired for making customers uncomfortable?

Re: That awkward moment when....

(Anonymous) 2019-03-21 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
To be fair, that wasn't you. It was Customer B. All you did was ask Customer A if they would be okay with waiting a while. Then you listened to Customer A, who rightly had priority.

If Customer B throws a fit about it, you were doing your job and helping Customer A.

Are they customers or colleagues. Because I'm in a support role in my place of work and my colleagues coming up to me generally accept "Sorry mate, In the middle of something" and when they don't I just tell them to go back to their seat and I'll be with them as soon as I can.

Okay, I've got a good one.

So my friend's uncle passed away unexpectedly. She and he were very close. A couple of weeks after the funeral, I was helping her clean out his house and we found a complete set of KKK robes and a fuckton of interracial gay porn featuring black men topping white men. It was beyond awkward and I had no idea what to say to my friend besides I'm so sorry.

Re: That awkward moment when....

(Anonymous) 2019-03-21 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe he was into dressing as the KKK and having black men top him as a kink thing?

If he wasn't actually racist anywhere else, I'd assume it's a secret weird sex RP raceplay thing.

Re: That awkward moment when....

SA

Of course, if he WAS racist elsewhere then yeah, welp.

Ayart

Yeah I've thought about the whole RP thing too and honestly I hope that's what was going on, I didn't know the guy very well so I can't say if he was a real racist or not.

Nah. Even role playing that bs is racist.

Re: That awkward moment when....

(Anonymous) 2019-03-21 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
Are you implying roleplaying as a KKK member privately with consenting black men as a kink is on the same level as literally belonging to the KKK? Yikes.

Re: That awkward moment when....

That is nice to imagine but tbh I don’t think it’s as likely as the other possibility - that the grandfather was a racist who also fetishized what he hated

Re: That awkward moment when....

(Anonymous) 2019-03-21 06:52 am (UTC)(link)
The simplest explanation by far is that he's a racist who also wants to fuck black dudes. Cmon.

Well, the entire point of the robes is to hide a person's identity so people don't know how racist they actually are, so I'd say it's unreasonably generous to assume he was only a kinkster.

Oh good god.

Re: That awkward moment when....

(Anonymous) 2019-03-21 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
And that’s why I hide all my BL manga and anime in a certain box and gave my friends specific instructions on how to dispose of it when I die.
