I still haven't seen the Good Omens TV show but that image is REALLY selling it to me for some reason. Looks like a lot of fun. Read the book years ago and enjoyed it.

Nobody has. It comes out in May.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-24 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
OH. Lol, I totally though it had been out for months already.

Wasn't there already a tv show for this with Gillian Anderson it it? Or am I confusing it with something else?

I was not sold on the casting or styling at all initially, but once the trailer and official promotion art came along, I said "I'm in!"

It's been years since I've read Good Omens fanfics, but I do distinctly remember most slash fics being really good (or maybe I was just lucky?), so I get your fear. But I'm looking forward to fanarts and gif sets regardless.

I feel like I could have written this secret, OP. I feel exactly the same. :(

(Anonymous) 2019-03-24 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
It's going to be horrific. I'm actually going through ao3/lj/etc saving all my old favourites right now before the shit fic hits the fan and I can't find anything decent anymore.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-24 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
That’s a good idea. TO AO3!!

(Anonymous) 2019-03-24 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I think you should share. Thanks. :)

NAYRT, but here's my all-time favorite: Lovely Zelda's A Mind of Its Own

I can't post links right now but if you google these titles/authors and 'ao3' then they should come up:

Anything but Ordinary by Cimorene
Bright with his splendour by Daegaer

Those are my two favorite fics. The second is gen but only in the same way that the book is gen - so an unspoken love story for the ages. :)

Searching GO recs still brings up some old lists of good stuff too.

Yeah, I agree. Entry to the Good Omens fandom required basic literacy due to, yknow, the source material being a book. I look forward to the show coming out, but it's not doing any favors to the fandom. Fanfic sites will be overwhelmed with the type of bad writing you see in people who only ever read fanfiction, so you can expect all manner of basic grammatical and writing errors. I'm a part of anime and video game fandoms, and they're so plagued by abominable writing that I don't even bother checking fanfic for them anymore. Good Omens fandom may not get that bad, but it will take longer to weed through the crap to get to the gold. I'm also sad that all the fan art from now on is going to look like the actors. I preferred it when people came up with their own interpretations.

+1 to all of this

"the type of bad writing you see in people who only ever read fanfiction"

People generally get a lot of pushback for saying this, but I'm with you 100%. There's a significant difference between seeing the fanfic produced in fandoms based solely on books than fandoms that are TV/movie based. Obviously not every writer who reads mostly fanfic is bad... but it's a little silly to pretend like there's not some correlation.

NAYRT

You're not wrong.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-25 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
omg Tennant looks so good like that.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-25 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, I too recall the decline of the quality of fic in the Harry Potter fandom once the movies came out. Oh wait.

And that was a fandom where the vast majority of writers were quite young, relatively speaking, so I expect even greater amounts of amazing fic to be churned out once this show starts.

If y’all think an already popular book getting made into a great TV show is going to result in WORSE fic overall, I weep cause y’all been reading some shitty fic in your other fandoms :/

Of course there will be more bad fic. There’s also going to be a TON of good fic. Just...don’t read the crap maybe???

(Anonymous) 2019-03-25 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
There really isn't going to be a ton of good fic. High school AUS?, coffee shop AUS, all the other utter bollocks sure. But good fic of the kind that already exists in the GO fandom? Unlikely.

Anyway, post-film HP isn't directly comparable. Most of the good fic in that fandom was written in the days when good writing, a love for the Canon and characters, and a sense of *fun* were still held in esteem as part of the fic writing process. Not the joyless soulless tick boxing exercise that fandom has become.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-25 01:25 pm (UTC)(link)
NAYRT but JFC you have issues.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-27 01:52 pm (UTC)(link)
A lot of fanfic is written because of love for characters but a disdain for canon in some form. AUs have always been a thing.
However do you mean fandom wants you to only write lesbian women or mention nonbinary people or something to show how "woke" you are instead of writing the fic you want to? Yes, that's joyless.

You can't write off all new fic-- a lot of people are coming back to the fandom or getting active as fanwriters either for the first time or for the first time since AO3 became a thing, because the excitement around the show has them re-reading the book and getting excited.

Like... I agree some people are going to get involved who have me wondering what the heck they saw that was so different from what I did, but that's not new, either. There's been bad fic before, too.

You just gotta take it on a case-by-case basis. (I'll admit, I'm avoiding any crossovers with certain other fandoms featuring angels and demons like the plague)

My old fic from back when I first wrote for the fandom is atrocious and I kind of hope it's been purged from LJ. I spent about a decade writing for other fandoms. The series finally happening has me back in the GO fandom as a much stronger writer than I was, with a name unconnected to the one I used back then. It would be easy to mistake me for a new fan if you didn't know me. So I'm trying to extend the same openness to other 'new' writers who may well be old fans.

There's going to be a flood of new fics to read, and they're not all going to be bad. Even if most of them aren't to my tastes or yours, the people getting excited to put out more fanworks that are good is something to be happy about.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-25 02:57 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not like all newbies to a fandom write consistently bad fic. You're going to get some good writers who have been writing for other fandoms, and some people who have never written fic before but turn out to be really good anyway!

Yes, there may be a lot of bad fic to wade through, but there will be plenty of good fic in there, too. I've been in large fandoms and small fandoms and I don't get this whole "I want my fandom to be small so the fic is better." I've read terrible fic for small fandoms, and in my opinion the size of the fandom really makes no difference! Even if the proportion of good fic is higher in a small fandom, you exhaust it fairly quickly and find that everyone seems to have run out of ideas or moved on to something else. In a larger fandom, you have to put in a bit more effort to separate the wheat from the chaff, but there's always more to read and there's more variation available.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-25 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Speaking as an old-school fan, I'll take 1000 badfic writers who are just having fun and not bothering anyone over just one screeching anti.

"AGING UP THE THEM TO SHIP THEM IS PEDOPHILIA YOU NASTIES!!"

"ANGELS AND DEMONS ARE ALL SIBLINGS SO AZIRAPHALE/CROWLEY IS INCEST YOU FREAKS!!!"

"THE HORSEPERSONS OF THE APOCALYPSE ARE PROBLEMATIC!!" (lol, no shit)

That's the part I'm dreading most. Fuck those assholes, we don't need that here.
