[The Umbrella Academy, The Haunting of Hill House]

(Anonymous) 2019-03-30 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)
What did the Haunting of Hill House guy do??

(Anonymous) 2019-03-30 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm trying to remember that too.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-30 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I was trying to recall, too. I remember his siblings were angry at him for writing the book about their childhood because they felt it was exploitative. They're even angrier because Steven is a skeptic, so he doesn't even believe any of that stuff so he thinks the family's issues with the house stem from mental health problems.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-30 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that is the only thing I can think of. If I was going to pick a bad sibling in that show, it would be Shirley. She is such a damn hypocrite.

As others have said it was his book based on their experiences. It was a bit like he never really tried to understand their trauma because he never saw anything in the house, or so he thought (it turned out he did, and their dad Hugh shielded him from a lot on the last night in the house. And again when they return in the present time line.)

I get the anger about his book but for me Hugh seemed to put a lot of different responsibilities on the two older kids in particular and that entire last night is gonna mess anyone up. Plus everyone who is angry seems to forget Theo (iirc?) actually did take the money from the book sales. That family spent a lot of time hurting and not understanding one another.

I don't hate any of the Hill kids tbh. I have my favourites but for me the whole point of the show was how differently they processed what happened and trying to finally rebuild long after the fact.

EDIT: Ok a comment below reminded me Steve lied to his wife about his fertility (he'd secretly had the snip) for years, which was pretty shitty and I struggle to hand wave that one with "well the house fucked him up."

The EDIT: has nothing to do with his bearing as a sibling though.

Didn't he repeatedly say that the other siblings should go to therapy? I mean, what more can he do than that?

All the siblings benefited from Steve's book sales! Theo took it openly and gave him shit for it, to pay for her PhD. Shirley's husband took it to keep the funeral home financially afloat. He paid for Luke's rehab after Shirley couldn't do it anymore. And he had to have paid for Nell's wedding/apartment, because there's no way she and her husband could have afforded a place bigger than a shoebox in LA on a sleep counselor's salary.

Theo is the only one who took it and then gave him shit for it, though, because Theo is the worst.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-30 07:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait, is that Tom Hopper?

(Anonymous) 2019-03-30 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes

(Anonymous) 2019-03-30 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I might have to check it out then after all. Thank you!

(Anonymous) 2019-03-30 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't HATE Luthor. I think he pulled rank a little too much with his siblings, and I do NOT agree with how he handled Vanya, but I do believe his actions through most of the show stemmed from good intentions even if they may have been clumsy and alienating (to the rest of the sibs).

Trying to remember what Steven did though that people may have hated him for? I mean it was pretty obvious (to me) that like in UA, all of the siblings in HH fucked up somewhere along the way with each other.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-30 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I fear for your siblings if that's the case.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-30 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
As an older sibling...lol no.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-30 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Luther was trying to do the right thing, that I can understand. But suggesting that they leave their sister behind to be killed in the apocalypse was shitty.

I don't know about the other guy.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-30 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate Luther because he doesn't know how stupid he is.

He thinks he's some great hero for the ages, but he's just an idiot born with super powers who completely bought into the false sense of superiority his daddy gave him. He would be somewhat less irritating if he learned from his dumbass mistakes, but the moron keeps doubling down on making even bigger, dumber mistakes. And then there's how Luther heaped all of his daddy's sins on Pogo, plus locking Vanya in cell without a bed or a toilet, and he more than earns every drop of haterade fandom pours on him.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-30 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Pogo is more responsible for how Vanya turned out than Luther. Like...90% more responsible.

I didn't see it that way at all. I don't think Luther thinks he's a genius or that he's superior to his siblings at all. I think that as a kid, he drank the Kool-Aid that Hargreeves was trying to serve to all the kids. He believes it's his role and duty to be the leader, and the tragedy is that he sacrificed his childhood (and a good part of his adulthood) and autonomy to try and fill that role, even though he wasn't very good at it. He tries and fails. His siblings see how flawed the whole UA academy plan was, but Luther doesn't. He's not stupid. But he's definitely a product of his upbringing, just like his siblings are. His role is to show you that good intentions don't always yield good end results.

In modern psychological terms, he'd be the "Golden Child" of the family while Vanya is the Scapegoat, both victims in different ways of a narcissistic parent.

I can only hear 'FATHER SENT ME TO THE MOON FOR A REASON' so many times before it get really fucking annoying.
(not to mention his ignorance to Klaus, constant belittlement of Diego, and his willingness to kill Grace)

Not sure what being the middle or youngest child has to do with hating these characters. I'm the oldest and, while I didn't hate them, I did dislike Luther's decision-making skills. I don't hate him though because I realize he was also a victim of circumstances and his upbringing pretty much taught him that they needed to neutralize whatever threat was coming at them. I must admit that I don't remember much of Steven to say if I disliked something he did, but I do remember not really liking his personality.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-30 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a very strong dislike of controlling, paternalistic characters who believe they have a right to make decisions for other people, and to enforce those decisions. So Luther definitely would never have been my favorite. However, what really made me dislike him was that he wasn't just a controlling, paternalistic douche, he was also kind of an idiot. He didn't just make decisions that weren't his right to make alone, he made really stupid decisions that weren't his right to make alone, and then doubled down on them after they blew up in everyone's faces, and also seemed not to recognize that he shared a huge chunk of the responsibility for how catastrophically things went in the end.

As for Steve, I was pretty forgiving of most of the stuff fandom hated him for w/r/t his dynamic within the family. I even felt defensive of him sometimes, and wanted to tell his siblings to get down off their high horses when it came to how they treated him for his writing. HOWEVER, when it was revealed that he hadn't told his wife he was firmly set against having kids - he'd just omitted that information for years - that was the point where he stopped being sympathetic to me, and became a cowardly, self-involved asshole.

That is an oddly specific assumption not just because the UA kids are...step-septuplets?

Luther is not THE WORST1!--I wish people could approach the characters with less pitting among him and Vanya and Allison and just acknowledge they've all got a difficult situation and their share of fuckups--but it's always weird when people try the "This is what any family member in that situation would do" argument.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-30 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Right? There's no older or younger siblings here (except Five, Technically). They are all EXACTLY the same age.

Idk about the guy on the right as I haven't seen the show, but I thought that Luther's actions were 100% in-character and consistent with what we saw on the show, but that doesn't mean I liked it or thought he was anything but a massive idiot.

But that's also the point of his character: he thinks he's the leader when in reality he wasn't, he was just a yes-man for his father, it's why he's so spectacularly bad at making his own judgement calls. And the other siblings went along with it because it's all they've known to do.

(Anonymous) 2019-03-31 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
I actually liked and sympathized with Steve. Not my fav, but I don't hate him. Not telling his wife he'd had the snip was inexcusable, but the book thing - it seemed only Shirley was REALLY REALLY upset by it. (The others, after all, took the money).

Shirley was awful, though.
