IMO, it's your responsibility to avoid spoilers, not everyone else's.

But that would mean I'm not the most important person on the internet, and obviously that's not true.

This.

I remember being on a movie message board way back in the day and someone was mad about being spoiled for The Godfather, a movie that was, at that time, over 25 years old! Dont wanna be spoiled? Either see the thing now or gtfo the parts of the internet that could potentially spoil you, ffs.

IMO, it's common courtesy to mark spoilers, and people who gleefully spread spoilers in public forums without marking them are just dicks.

I don't think ayrt is referring to little shits who enjoy going out of their way to ruin a person's day. More like people who go where spoilage is very likely to happen and then whine when it does.

OP didn't really verify though?

I think there's a difference between, say, going into a Reddit thread* for your old fandom... and just generally being on Facebook, or fandom!secrets for that matter, and having people blab things without warning.

*That being said, I'm on a few Reddit groups for older anime, including one with a pretty famous character death, and the mods still require marking spoilers. Which honestly seems like a perfectly civil thing to do. It takes two seconds to do, and allows newbies to post and peruse as they are still watching it for the first time. Which honestly is super fun - sometimes you're watching a series and just want to talk about it, even if you haven't finished it yet.

Naw, mate, if you're going to get all pissy if someone on facebook blabs that the boat sinks in Titanic, then don't go on facebook. It's not the rest of the world's responsibility to avoid talking about popular culture until you decide to catch up.

Lol I got 'in trouble' for "spoiling" Tristan and Isolde when that movie came out.

Like, it's a Greek tragedy, yo. If you didn't already know everyone's probably going to die...

Re: Secrets you're too lazy to make

(Anonymous) 2019-04-17 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
Pfft, next you're going to tell me there's something off about that nice young man Oedipus and his wife.

Re: Secrets you're too lazy to make

(Anonymous) 2019-04-17 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
Tristan and Isolde is medieval literature, not a Greek tragedy.

And so what if it is? I'm imagining you telling people about to see the film how it ends, and that's just shitty no matter how you look at it.

Re: Secrets you're too lazy to make

(Anonymous) 2019-04-17 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
In all fairness, I was in line with friends to see a different movie and someone in my group brought it up and wondered about whether it would be good and I think I said something like, "It'll probably be sad since I'm pretty sure they both die."

Someone ELSE in line got mad at me. So it's not like I intentionally spoiled it.

Dumb example with a famous historical event.

"Avoid all human contact if you ever want to enjoy anything fresh ever" may be technically true, but it's common courtesy to not spoil things. It baffles me how hard it is for people to warn for spoilers or why they seem to take such sadistic delight in blabbing spoilers just because no, it technically isn't illegal for them to do so.

When it comes to big twists I think there should be a grace period where other people are considerate, but for other types of spoilers I agree.

Your responsibility in the sense that, you should be careful walking down dark alleyways at night. I.e. you can't control other people being assholes.

That doesn't mean they aren't assholes, though.

Re: Secrets you're too lazy to make

(Anonymous) 2019-04-17 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Discussing a movie in public with likeminded people isn't being an asshole.

Re: Secrets you're too lazy to make

(Anonymous) 2019-04-17 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, what specific scenario are you referring to, exactly?

Having a physical conversation with friends? Posting a spoiler on a mixed-fandom place like fandom!secrets without marking it?

Re: Secrets you're too lazy to make

(Anonymous) 2019-04-17 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
We live in a society and it's reasonable to have some kind of norms of trying to allow people to avoid spoilers. Just because people take it to absurd extremes doesn't change that some degree of spoiler warning is a reasonable polite compromise.

Agreed. When there's something I don't want to be spoiled for, I just avoid browsing tags for that particular thing until after I've seen/read/played whatever it is. It's not that hard to do and I've managed to avoid spoilers for pretty much everything for more than ten years at this point.

Tentatively agree, but there are people out there who actively spoil things for other people for shits and giggles.

Re: Secrets you're too lazy to make

(Anonymous) 2019-04-17 09:29 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. So it has always been, though, even before the Internet was such a part of our lives.

Like, the spoiler for Citizen Kane was so ubiquitous *in the 70s* that I'd been spoiled for it well before I was old enough to understand it if I watched it.

Re: Secrets you're too lazy to make

(Anonymous) 2019-04-17 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
I will if I can, but I need other people to help me out by tagging and shit like that. I don't want to have to completely avoid the internet because someone doesn't want to take the time to warn or tag. (If someone doesn't tag anything on their blog, that's fine and their choice. I won't follow them. I'm talking about posting to communities and the like.)

Re: Secrets you're too lazy to make

(Anonymous) 2019-04-17 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed.

Related, it's a huge pet peeve of mine with people click fanfiction links and then whine to the author about not tagging spoilers. Like... seriously, dude? Don't read fanfiction if you're afraid of spoilers.

i ghostwrote this.
if you go look on twitter the morning after like idk the Game of Thrones Finale aired and you get spoiled for it, it's kinda your own fault. At least try to avoid spoilers before you whine
