I have such a bad toothache. I should have made a dentist appointment a couple of weeks ago but I kept forgetting because the pain was mild and only came at night. Guess I'm paying for it now, but hopefully I'll be able to get an appointment real soon.

I can't remember what story it was, but there's this one where a girl complains that she helped out a fairy (or something of the sort) and the fairy 'only' blessed her with good teeth all her life, and another character says that's a damn good blessing. I've always wished that could happen to me, having a fairy magically bestow me good teeth all my life, haha.

He didn't give me an answer for why no second shot. He did suggest that if I'm still having issues at my next appointment in two months, we could talk about another shot then. And he dropped the drug when I pushed, but I had to push pretty hard. He didn't just take a no for an answer.

So last week I came home from a hike pouring sweat and puking, with a headache from hell. Ever since, I’ve been waking up in the middle of the night to pee like a goddamn horse. I suspect bladder/uti/kidney bullshit, but whatever it is, this isn’t the first time; I went to the doctor for something similar last year, and had a couple milder flare-ups in between, and my lower left abdomen is often kind of distended and sore. I’ve had similar things happen on and off for years and I hope it’s, idk, gall or kidney stones and not cancer.

When it happened last year, I walked into my nearest Kaiser clinic feeling like death, and they couldn’t see me until a few days later, which sucked because I threw up in the bushes outside on my way out. I bought a home uti test the next day and tested way positive. When my appointment rolled around, whatever it was had mostly gone away, and a urine test turned up bupkis. The doc (not my GP) said the home test probably wasn’t accurate because UTIs don’t vanish on their own, so idk.

I hate going to the doctor, because they (may be required by their jobs to) always make a big deal of my weight. I also hate phone calls. Kaiser supposedly has an online appointment booking thing now, and when I was pissing half my body weight at 4:00 am this morning, I logged in and looked for upcoming appointment slots with my (new, I’ve never worked with this one, maybe he’ll actually listen instead of saying “come back when you’ve lost 40 lbs.”) GP. I got all the way out to the beginning of August with no available times before giving up.

So now I get to psych myself up to make a phone call (ugh) to make a doctor’s appointment (gags) to figure out if something’s really wrong (bites nails.)

Please, for the love of fuck, let the doctor actually take into account that I walked an average of 5.1 miles a day last year and 6.7 miles a day so far this year (summer will drop my average because heat and humidity= blargh) and have never smoked anything, taken any recreational drugs, or drank alcohol (and I have maybe four sodas and five coffees a year.) The only otc meds I take are ibuprofen for headaches and a generic antihistamine for hayfever. I haven’t eaten meat in a quarter century and cook most meals from scratch.

But given my luck and past experiences, I’ll be told if I just dropped my BMI from 30 to 20, I’d never have to visit the doctor ever again, and shooed out the door.

Re: Notre Dame backlash...

I agree, and I find this really exhausting - and I've never been to Notre Dame so am not one of the people sharing their photos. I mean, dude, it's an important landmark that meant something to a lot of people, and it's extremely historically and architecturally significant. That's not even getting into the spiritual/religious connection countless people had to it, or that it was just a visually beautiful building that could take your breath away.

I think it's fine to use this as a starting point to raise awareness about other historical and cultural significant landmarks that have been lost, and pledge ourselves to actively protecting them. It's also fine to point out the wealth inequality of billionaires pledging their chump change to restore Notre Dame, or criticize the Vatican's unwillingness to help. It's fine to point out that it could be hard to spend hundreds of millions of dollars restoring a building when money needs to go to other causes as well.

But it's a good thing that people feel an emotional connection to this building. We should not be simplifying this to some dichotomy of "if you donate to a building instead of the homeless, you suck." It's good that people care about Notre Dame - that passion will hopefully lead to it being restored, and increase awareness about precious historical landmarks, including ones that don't get as much attention.

I think people tend to treat caring and empathy as a currency of sorts, because it's all they have to offer (or are willing to offer) in times like this. Signal boosting and call outs on the internet are all they've got to show their support.

"injustice in the funding provided by governments and the ultra-wealthy"

I feel like this is an excellent thing to bring up, but it depends on the framing. Like, "Hey guys, good news, it's not as bad as we thought because ______" as opposed to "You're enabling the erasure of brown people history and supporting rich people welfare by being sad about Notre Dame!"

You should follow suit and demand answers for why no second steroid shot. If there's a logical medical reason for why you can't have it, then you deserve to hear it. And if he pushes hard, then he needs to have a damn good answer for why the negative side effects aren't an issue, or why it's so important to try THIS antidepressant instead of finding something else that doesn't make you feel suicidal.

Pain management doctors tend to be rather cynical, IMO. It's because they see a lot of people abusing the system, and they're extra wary and not always the most empathetic despite their role. Unfortunately, it means patients have to do a lot more advocating for themselves, and they can't get upset or pushy while doing so because it looks like drug-seeking behavior to a medical professional.

The story rings a bell... possibly related to Terry Pratchett and the witches of Lancre.

Re: Notre Dame backlash...

... how is that 'injustice'? People have every right to give their money to causes that have a personal significance to them. If someone wants to give a million dollars to an animal shelter, that's entirely within their rights and they shouldn't be shamed for doing so because there are starving children in Africa, how dare you.

No one is owed anyone else's charity and frankly it's pretty disgusting to act like they are.

I have two favourite types of ship:

1) a femdom with a partner who worships the ground she walks on

2) murderers in love

Yay! A Rookie secret!

I really like the show, and I do enjoy their chemistry. They're probably the most ship-able but I can't really find anyone to truly ship on that show.

I don't think it's from Discworld because I would definitely remember if it was :p (I won't swear on it though lol.) But I remembered it because it did ring like a Pratchettian thing.

I don't mind people being sad about it. I was sad too!

I DO mind that my country's government feel the need to donate when yes, we have Flint and yes, Black Churches burned and yes, Puerto Rico needs help.

I mean.......I'm pretty sure the Catholic church has the money to repair it. They were doing that when the fire broke out.

Okay, thanks for the advice. At this point, I leave for Mexico on Sunday. But I'll set up my first PT appointment for when I get back, talk with them and see what they think. And then if I need to I'll set up another appointment with the pain doctor.

There's a huge, huge variety of types of anti-depressants and they are not all even remotely the same, though. Most people have to go through trying a few before they find the one that works for them, and just because you had a bad reaction to one doesn't mean that you'll react badly to them all.

Having done the antidepressant roulette myself, I really would not veto the entire idea of anti-depressants just because one didn't work. I did not do well with Welbutrin at all (it made me physically ill) but Prozac works amazingly for me.
