I heard they were having trouble raising money for the conservation/repair efforts that may have accidentally started the fire, so maybe?

Yeah, a coworker and I were trying to come up with a US equivalent to Notre Dame in terms of historical/cultural significance and couldn’t, really. Anything that dates back that far would’ve been built by Native Americans and official government policy for centuries was to kill them/drive them off their land, and the only monumental construction left in the lower 48 is the Cahokia mounds, which not even everyone on the US knows about. The closest thing we could think of was the Smithsonian.

Everybody at least knows that Notre Dame is a famous cathedral in Paris.

Same. I do have family who loves me, but I often wonder if it's mainly because they feel obligated to.

Any fandom recs for the first dynamic?

Re: Notre Dame backlash...

Well. The Statue of Liberty would be a pretty big one, symbolism-wise.

I mean, you don't have to agree w it butthe idea that Christian churches should be poor and austere and should focus on good works is not a novel idea or one that's fundamentally alien to Christianity

Obviously it's really not Catholicism's style but there's a case to be made from a Christian point of view

Well, but, I mean, don't you have to ask how that state of affairs came to pass? I mean, why do we know more about one, why is one a tourist destination?

And it's not like this is limited to Brazil either

I get it. For the time being, however, I'm mostly interested in show-based fan art that gives Crowley back his black hair.

You mean flint which no longer has any of the residents threatened by any further harm from the piping, or Purto Rico where aid is being left to rot on landing pads.

Seems if you actually cared about those things instead of virtue signalling about how woke you are you'd be aware of those little facts?

Same. I just want someone to snuggle and have sex with and who will also do some chores and not expect to be paid for any of that (but rather, pays half the bills!) but dating to find a person to do that? Blarg! Too much work! :P

I feel the same way.

Funny how you want to play "hur dur I hate social justice but I have no links to share." and coincidentally had nothing to say about the black churches.

Frankly, you're nothing but a contrarian pain in the ass and this was a better community when you weren't here, and I wish my ban of you from my journal actually went to you not being able to reply to me in any capacity.

I think the role of foreign governments re: Notre Dame should be to donate things like part of a stained-glass window or a gargoyle or something - a token gift that is material and visible and can have a little plaque under it, e.g. "A gift to the people of France from the people of [country]" - while the main restoration funding should come from private/corporate donations, the Catholic church, and the French government and city of Paris. Since there are already hundreds of millions of Euros pledged by French billionaires and corporations, I think this will work out fine without the US or any other foreign governments making large monetary donations.

(Individuals around the world can donate as they please - that's not anyone else's business regardless of what other problems are happening and how much people try to shame others on social media.)

The best new Australian cartoon at the moment is called Bluey. It's about a family of dogs and its the most realistic and true to life picture of Australian life in memory. Plenty of awesome characters and sweet accents.

There's also the fact that "starving children in Africa" problems are usually far too wide-reaching and complex to be solved just by having rich people throw money at the problem. You're talking issues of environment and geography, geo-politics and conflict, infrastructure, culture, and all kinds of other underlying and intersecting issues. There are NGOs and such doing good work who should be supported, absolutely, but while your donation helps to alleviate certain specific problems for individuals, it will never solve the bigger problems.

Meanwhile, restoring a damaged building is a smaller, more discrete problem that CAN be solved by throwing money at it.

GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE

(Anonymous) 2019-04-18 06:40 pm (UTC)(link)
There would definitely be international attention if the Golden Gate Bridge were destroyed or heavily damaged. Everyone knows about it.

If you want something pre-European, though, there's also Mesa Verde and Chaco Canyon and other structures in the southwest, which definitely have more national and international recognition than Cahokia. Pueblo Bonito in Chaco Canyon is on par with Notre Dame in terms of age (slightly older, actually). However, while I've never been to Mesa Verde, I can tell you that Chaco Canyon is pretty remote and definitely not in the middle of a large city with other tourist destinations and an abundance of croissants, so I'm sure it doesn't get anywhere close to the same level of tourist traffic.

Re: Notre Dame backlash...

(Anonymous) 2019-04-18 06:50 pm (UTC)(link)
It was physically crumbling and no one was swooping in to donate hundreds of millions to fix the problem.

One, harm amelioration for specific individuals is still a moral good, if it's done in a way that doesn't cause larger problems.

Two, I think there are some very good and thorough-going critiques of the way that billionaire philanthropy is actually carried out compared to what could be done, but that's probably beyond the scope of the thread.

Three, there's still the issue of operating in a system where making changes is depend on the will and the ability of billionaires in the first place.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-18 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Same.

NAYRT—yeah, I think I could do the actual not fun parts of being in a relationship, but for me, dating is the hard part. Can’t I skip to the part where I cook and do laundry and give blowjobs in exchange for someone to sort my mail and mop the floor and tell me they like me?

It isn't grammatically correct but where I am from it is pretty much accepted that 'hunny and hun' are terms of endearment and would be spelled that way if writing to the person they are aimed at. 'hon' is rather jarring here and would be pronounced the way it looks. I can understand why it would irritate if not a person's thing.
