He played a major role in Spiderman Homecoming (being the driving force for both Peter AND Vulture).

1000% agreed

+1 The black-and-white mentality in fandom is exhausting and leads to some really ridiculous behavior on all sides.

Omg same OP. And friendships too.

sa

I should point out that it wasn't just being surrounded by toxic relationships, it was also because i'm autistic. People were a complete mystery to me. Fic gave me a low stress and anxiety free space to think about relationships and how to behave around people. I learnt pretty much all of my friendship and relationship ethics from fic.

The majority of trans headcanons I've seen are usually about the desire of trans fans to see themselves in their fictional faves. Nothing wrong with that, IMO.

Is reincarnation even a thing in Star Wars? (Aside from, say, cloning dead people?)

I’m none of the anons in this thread and my only experiences with fashion/tailoring were a couple college courses and sewing my own cosplay. I’m also shorter than petite clothes are designed for and my BMI is 30. High fashion treats both women and men as animate clothes hangers. Society in general does commodify women’s bodies and treat us like shit if we don’t fit a very narrow ideal, but runway models all look pretty much like attenuated elves, whether or not they’re female.

Everyone can get spend their money on the merch they like, sure.
But I silently judge people who get Dakimaruas.
I just think those things are cringey to the max and just can't fathom why anyone would spend money on them (and not look like a borderline creep or weirdo along the way).

wh

wow

way to shit on him retroactively

(Anonymous) 2019-04-28 03:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I had to go read the summary of the script myself. It definately feels like a bad fan fiction.

It's kind of funny how the people who are always on about how awful it is that there's like, 4 dumb mean fat people in Harry Potter tossed in among the fat people who aren't dumb and mean aren't equally up in arms about the sneaky mean skinny people stereotype that also pops up in the books.

+1

(Anonymous) 2019-04-28 04:06 pm (UTC)(link)
That's going to be a big yikes from me.

See...I get it about Cedric.

He's humiliated in front of the whole school, he goes from being the golden boy everyone is cheering on to...being laughed at.

Then someone is talking about respect and power...and Cedric listens.

I get it.

I went to see the play, despite not being a fan of the script...but I ended up coming away from it loving it. Not just the technical stuff, which was unbelievable, but everything came together.

I'm not a MCU fan at all and I can't stand Tony.

I must have watched it wrong because I really didn't get that. I thought they teased woobifying him and then said "Nyah, nyah, got you! None of that backstory matters because he's an evil sack of shit."

Do you think that, in general, society is equally biased against skinny people and fat people?

I don't mind. Merchandising is not new, and I love the fact that I can find merchandising for stuff that was relatively obscure when I was a kid (like Doctor Who or anime in the US) right there in a regular store, intended for mainstream consumption. I don't actually like owning much merch, but I feel validated seeing it.

I've never had much if the "I only liked that band when they were obscure" attitude towards this kind of thing. As an 80s kid growing up with so many fandoms that had been established before I was born (Star Trek, Star Wars, Doctor Who, Tolkien, Sherlock Holmes, most popular comic book superheroes, a LOT of significant and popular SF&F lit...) and with my own fandom participation being dependent upon adult-controlled spaces like the cons my parents brought me to (there were VERY few kids or teens at cons in the 80s - it was a very different fannish landscape) I was always hyperaware that there was an existing club that I was meery hanging around the edges of. It was very different than what internet fandom would become by the late 90s, where young people could be cagey about their age to participate in adult-dominated spaces, or just create their own spaces, e.g. start their own Geocities site, sign up for their own social media account, or post their fic to an archive for free. (Internet fandom a la Usenet and Compuserve existed in the 80s, but like most kids, I didn't have access to those things, and I wouldn't be surprised if those spaces skewed older because of it.) What I'm getting at is my sense of exclisivity in fandom and sense of ownership over media has always been kind of warped because I've never lived in a fandom bubble, so it's hard for me to care that something has "gone mainstream."

Meanwhile, I have no problem finding essentially unlimited fanworks for free, so the fact that people might have a Patreon, or a monetized YouTube channel, or put out exclusives behind a paywall doesn't bother me. I'm still getting what I want.

Besides, where am I supposed to draw the line between fanworks that should be free and regular entertainment that I should expect to pay for? I draw a pretty hard line with fan fiction, but there's a sizeable chunk of my fannish consuption that consists of YouTube videos that fall under the analysis and commentary categories. (I used to really love critical discussions on message boards meta posts on LJ and such, too, and I still love them when I can find them, but I'm terrible at using tumblr.) That's not fundamentally different than published books and TV specials on literary criticism or media studies topics that people get paid to make. I mean, Lindsay Ellis makes YouTube videos for PBS as well as her own channel, so why would I draw the line and say her own channel shouldn't have commercials or a Patreon?

AYRT-- I get very salty when Kylo fans share headcanons of Han being an abusive parent. Fuck all y'all. Although I keep quiet, because I know my perspective is based on being old as hell and a Han fan for a very long time. No WAY I am going to favour a new character over him unless I see reasons onscreen. And even then I will probably make excuses.

I think that damaging stereotypes are damaging even if they are against a group that you, personally, think deserves the body-shaming.

I hear you and it sucks. I haven't stopped posting but I see all the explicit fic getting tons more hits and comments and ugh.
