I think most of the criticism against Ariana Grande wouldn't be said if she were a guy.

Considering people want to axe murder the Russos for the "first gay character in the MCU and it's no-one you'd gues!!! :D :D :D "... uuuuuh no. Disagree.

Nah. Dumbledore's reveal wasn't great, but consider how many major characters in children's media were gay 12 years ago.

It's a good point, and she's really made up for it by making sure that he's depicted as textually, unquestionably gay in the movies made more recently in a different political and social climate

Axe murder? More like eyeroll because Disney is overselling it again.

I read a tweet that said "JKR really hates fat people, huh," and my immediate thought was how back in the day people pointed out obvious influences in HP from other British children's authors, namely Roald Dahl. JKR's treatment of fat people in her books has nothing on that guy. If people are going to criticize her, they should recognize the male authors she was influenced by and not act like she invented all these British kidlit tropes like the stupid mean fat person.

Okay, but, Dahl does not have nearly the huge fandom Rowling does. I have heard criticisms of Dahl. There should be more because there are a lot of problems in his writing. But it is disingenuous to expect the same amount of criticism as for someone with as huge a fandom as Harry Potter has and to suggest that gender of the author is the only reason for the differing amounts of criticism.

Dahl's been dead for, what, thirty years now? And you don't think Rowling could have considered for herself what messages her writing was sending?

Re: Secrets (fandom or non fandom)/unpopular opinions

(Anonymous) 2019-04-28 06:09 am (UTC)(link)
Er... Rowling's a person with free will, not a sponge who must helplessly soak up whatever puddle of tropes she's tossed in. If she absorbed some rather toxic messages while she was trying to borrow Dahl's whimsy and other tasty tidbits of British kidlit, that's on her. She's an adult - an adult who is writing well after Dahl's career and life ended and who's still not making great decisions. Let me ask you... has she apologized for being unduly influenced by those awful tropes?

Nah, don't think so. Not if she were a man who behaved exactly the same way. IMO, a male JKR would get even more criticism, especially re: her support of Johnny Depp.

Swap out Ariana Grande for most female celebrities, and you're still right.

Maybe but I don't think that makes the criticism wrong

I mean, you might be right if you nitpick someone, but it's still a dick thing to do.

I had to google her (and no wonder, a current pop singer, I'm so clueless about that) - what horrifying 'thing' is she supposed to have done that has the masses frothing?

There are lots of accusations of cultural appropriation - her enthusiasm for fake tan and AAVE can make for an uncomfortable combo there, and getting the kanji for "charcoal grill" tattooed on her hand sure didn't help - and she's been pulling a bit of the "I Kissed A Girl"-style 'Look at me I'm so cool I'll kiss a girl and it's totally not for male titillation, no way', which is increasingly uncool.

Hrmmmmmmmm. Fake tanning is so *fake* i can't imagine anyone getting upset about it. Fake tan people look *orange*, it's just...fucking weird.

I had to google AAVE - is that something she grew up around/is used to hearing? Or is it just something she's using (not asking you to explain, just wondering). I can see someone using it now and again if they grew up around it/their friends use it a lot, but only *occasionally*. If you're just some white chick from Peoria...stoppit.

I dislike intensely the 'i kissed a girl' stuff. Arrgh.

In addition to what the other anon said, she had a thing recently where I guess some bloggers criticized her music and she tweeted a big thing about how PEOPLE WHO JUST CRITICIZE MUSIC DON'T REALIZE THEIR LIVES ARE EMPTY AND WORTHLESS or something like that

which, for me, is a bad look

True. I think Brandon Urie and Harry Styles have both gotten away with ambiguous sexuality in both lyrics and interviews. Urie came out. Styles is still being ambiguous about the issue (understandably given how he's the focus of some of the worst tin-hatting of the last decade). In both cases there were plenty of stans arguing they should come out (if at all) on their own time.
