Fic recs and search

Because I'm going mad looking for a particular one.

GoT Fic Search

(Anonymous) 2019-05-02 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm looking for a long fic set during the long night/battle against the dead. I don't remember what ship(s) but I think Jaime/Brienne or maybe Sansa/Hound. The battle took place over an extended time (months I think) and they used the crypts as the living area/triage/HQ...everything. It was not a foregone conclusion that the living would win.

I read it sometime after season seven aired but longer ago than 6 months. It may even have been written before season seven aired. As for rating: E is my start point then I read the M fics and then start digging through the unrated fics. I like my smut, ok? But I'm not sure this did include smut.

Really I just want a better battle than the show gave us.

Ah, man. I'm gonna give this a shot, since I desperately want to re-read a Supernatual fic.....

Sam is dying, and makes a death-wish with a djinn. He and Dean are 'reborn' - apart. But Dean at age four starts asking about 'Sam', has nightmares and cries over missing 'Sam', etc. Sam, meanwhile, is in the foster system, changes his name to 'lose' himself and hopes Dean never finds him.

But he does, and Dean's parents, in particular (Dean is an adult now) are surprised and a little weirded out that Dean has found the 'Sam' he talked bout all his life and is apparently very happy with him (it's a Wincest fic even though they're not actually blood or even half/step/foster siblings in this fic).

Since it seems to be GOT day today, has anyone seen any time travel fic where Jaime or Sandor or Tyrion are the one to travel back in time? I'm interested to see how their changed characters impact the story. (Maybe Jaime most of all - I reckon Sandor as likely as not to just toss Joffrey out a window first chance then bigger off for parts unknown, and Tyrion's been less interesting of late)

Is Sansa / Tyrion a good ship

(Anonymous) 2019-05-03 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
I think it *can* be, depending on how it's written. I tend not to have OTPs/NOTPs, so my answer to this sort of thing is always gonna be a bit wishy-washy, but yeah - IF Sansa gets some proper character development, IF Tyrion stops flipping between 'smug drunk' and 'self-pitying drunk', IF Sansa's not just stuck making the best of a terrible situation and developing Stockholm Syndrome... I've seen some really good Sansa/Tyrion fics, and some really bad ones too.

Best fandom faker stories

(Anonymous) 2019-05-03 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Have any faker (or other interesting drama) stories from your fandoms??

Re: Best fandom faker stories

(Anonymous) 2019-05-03 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
I remember a girl in a fandom I was in sliding into faker territory with a story about running into David Duchovny at a gas station (or maybe it was a super market) late one night, and having a pretty fantasy level chat with him. She didn't go as far as to say they became friends, or he asked for her number, or anything. But it was still a very idealized scenario, in a way that made many of us 99% sure it was made up.

It was a weird one, because she was fairly popular in fandom, and for the most part was friendly and fun to talk to and, well, normal. But I guess her need to feel...idk, cool and validated? got away from her now and then. To my memory, nobody confronted her and accused her of lying (which I'm glad about now) - but we had some private conversations about it among ourselves.

Piggybacking on yesterday's thread, I have known several "gay guys" who turned out to be cishet girls playing pretend for the attention. It's always beyond entertaining when they get found out and dragged over the coals. Some of the excuses they come up with! One girl desperately tried to claim she had "multiple personality disorder" and she hadn't lied at all, to which literally everyone was like "that isn't how DID works you fucking asshole" LMAO

A 40-something lady in my fandom with an unhappy marriage wrote a weirdly flirty, cougar-ish bio for her FFnet profile. I don't know how many 20-something straight men she hoped to attract on there, but it was super cringey like something you'd expect from a middle-aged 50 Shades fan.

A young woman made a HUGE show on an internet message board about her online boyfriend dying. Like, complete with INTERNET TEARS over the top SOBBING. I already suspected she was full of shit from her past questionable behavior, but everyone was jumping into the thread making GFM-worthy offers to assist. Another individual and I spent the entire thread mocking the situation by play-acting our own crisis situation.

Then, three later, the young woman came back with an equally dramatic post about HOW ANGRY SHE WAS that her boyfriend had FAKED HIS ILLNESS AND IMMINENT DEATH. Sadly, everyone else still showed sympathy to her while huffing about the mean boyfriend.

Story above reminded me: there was this girl on an ATC trading site who faked herself being in a coma to scam people into drawing free ATCs for her. Went like this: one day, "someone logged into her account" wrote in the forum belonging to the site that they were her boyfriend and that she'd been in an accident and was now in a coma. "He" (still not sure if it was all herself or if she really roped someone else into doing it for her) said he wanted to see if people were willing to draw some angel-themed cards for her because she really liked angels and he wanted to collect many cards to hive to her when (or if) she woke from the coma. A lot of people fell for it and drew cards and sent it to him. However, I went to investigate and found out that she very much had not had any kind of accident, let alone was in a coma. But by that point, quite a few people had already been scammed. We banned her from the site then and there.

White Male Characters who fandom hates

(Anonymous) 2019-05-03 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Because I'm having trouble thinking of many, but that might just be me.
Bonus points if they're not a villain.
Double bonus points if they're not straight.

Nathan Ford from Leverage. Can't stand the half of fandom that thinks the show would have been better without his character.

Can I count Michael from The Good ? Fans love him but hate when you ship him with Eleanor because you're detracting from more diverse ships.

Well, Luther is obvious.

A lot of people hate Castiel.

Scott from Teen Wolf. Yeah, he is hispanic but he is white hispanic. And he looks as white as any other white character on the show.

The Sherlock fandom doesn't hate Sherlock, but a whole lot of Greater Fandom does. (It's possibly deserved, though, and I say that as a fan.)

And, of course, Tony Stark. Is he disproportionately loved? Definitely. Is he also disproportionately hated? Absolutely. Will I concede that he is MORE disproportionately loved than hated? Yup. But all the same.

A lot of people love Harry Potter, but a lot of other people seem to think he's a boring-ass white boy who ought to take several seats and let "more interesting" characters lead.

Malcolm Reynolds.

And then there's pretty much every white, straight male lead from an '00s show - most of whom were pretty good characters in and of themselves, but who garner a lot of contempt because, "Oh god, not another one; what flavor of mavericky-genius-with-manpain will he be this time?"

My first big run-in with this was Finn Hudson from Glee. Like, he was a dumb teenager and he made dumb teenager mistakes, literally all of them did, but god you'd think he was the actual fuckin' Antichrist for how much hate he got. So ridiculous. It got so bad that if you even remotely gave the idea that you were in any way fond of him as a character, you too were the Antichrist and people descended on you like locusts.
