Yeah, "Nerd Culture" definitely wasn't a business before. All those nerd movies/games/shows were made for free and without merchandise.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-05 07:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Come on. I get what you're saying, but it's ridiculous to pretend like this hasn't gone hugely mainstream and hugely corporate and commercial on a significantly larger scale than before.

I'm 80% on the way to agreement, I just don't know what cottage marketing means in this context.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-05 05:18 pm (UTC)(link)
What is cottage marketing? Is it on vacation?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-05 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
cottage industry = a business or manufacturing activity carried on in a person's home.

They're saying that nerds are doing advertising work for free.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-05 05:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel this is less depressing and more just leverage of people's passions, and also that it is neither new nor limited specifically to nerd culture. Let's talk about how, for example, people pay to wear branded items and essentially pay to masquerade as a walking billboard for their chosen brand. This shit is as old as ads in general.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-05 06:11 pm (UTC)(link)
You can find both depressing, no? And I'd argue that it's gotten much, much more blatant in nerd culture in the past decade.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-05 06:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Just because you're wearing a brand name on your clothes doesn't mean that you're, like, committed to that brand or care about it at all

I can sort of see what you and some of the other anons are saying because even as a MCU fan I have observed that the last two Avengers films especially are seemingly beyond criticism. As in, anyone who says anything negative ("wait, that didn't make any sense" etc) usually gets dog piled in some circles for just not understanding genius or whatever. It does get a bit like, the films have made loads of money regardless of what this one critic thinks, why do you feel the need to defend them so hard?

Very much not against people passionately defending something they enjoy, I do that too. But sometimes it seems to come close to crossing over into something else.

I don't think I've ever observed similar behaviour with a clothing brand. I'm not sure how that would work...something like "that t-shirt is a little dull for my tastes" "YOU JUST DON'T GRASP THE COMPLEXITIES OF THE LOGO CONTRASTED WITH THE UNCONVENTIONAL STITCHING IN THE COLLAR!" ??

Well that makes the secret even sillier. Are people not supposed to talk about shit they like?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-05 06:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't talk about it like this particular franchise of blockbuster movies is uniquely morally valuable? Don't talk about it like this particular franchise of blockbuster movies doing well at the box office is important in any sense?

There's a difference between talking about things you like, and rooting for a corporate brand, and wayyyyyy too many people do the latter.

BREAKING NEWS: People like to see something they are interested in do well.

Apparently Nerds are learning something the Jocks have known for years. No wonder they get beat up.

They're welcome to, but I think it's also worth considering why sequels and reboots are so prevalent, how oligopolistic the entertainment industry is, and how the structure of fandom has fundamentally changed since corporations have embraced fanwork (for the most part)

It is nice that it is okay to be a nerd these days. It is nice that more things I like get made. Beyond that I don't honestly care that much.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-05 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
That’s how I feel about it too.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-05 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
+1

I feel like this has been a thing for a very long time.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-05 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Otherwise Star Trek and Star Wars wouldn't be what they are, Comic-con wouldn't be the way it is now, video game series wouldn't be where they are, and anime wouldn't either. Some corporations are slower to catch on than others and some forget and have to re-learn this again and again.

Re: I feel like this has been a thing for a very long time.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-05 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
TNG/DS9/VOY-era Trek was a bunch of cheap TV shows on first-run syndication. Come on.

Of course culture has always been an industry, but I think there's a quantitative difference difference between those things, and the situation we're in now, where the MCU is the single largest and most valuable media property in history, *and* people identify and are asked by marketing to identify with it and its financial success on a personal level and as fans.

And yet, arguably better than several of the movies and other shows with bigger budgets. And if you don't think those were all about getting nerds to watch and identify themselves as nerds and talk about them, then I don't think you were paying attention. But that's not all that Star Trek was or is (live-action shows, yes, but movies, cartoons, books, merchandise, documentaries, parodies, etc.) and it's been part of nerd culture for literally half a century.

I get that it's bumming you out, but most depressing thing you've seen in your lifetime? You need to be more aware of the world around you. Hell of a lot more depressing things are going on other than comic books.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-06 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
+ a bajillion.
Signed, someone who actually watches what some major news agencies broadcast!?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-06 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
I'd say the "nerds" have moved on to indie/retro stuff.
