What is cottage marketing? Is it on vacation?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-05 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
cottage industry = a business or manufacturing activity carried on in a person's home.

They're saying that nerds are doing advertising work for free.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-05 05:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel this is less depressing and more just leverage of people's passions, and also that it is neither new nor limited specifically to nerd culture. Let's talk about how, for example, people pay to wear branded items and essentially pay to masquerade as a walking billboard for their chosen brand. This shit is as old as ads in general.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-05 06:11 pm (UTC)(link)
You can find both depressing, no? And I'd argue that it's gotten much, much more blatant in nerd culture in the past decade.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-05 06:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Just because you're wearing a brand name on your clothes doesn't mean that you're, like, committed to that brand or care about it at all

I can sort of see what you and some of the other anons are saying because even as a MCU fan I have observed that the last two Avengers films especially are seemingly beyond criticism. As in, anyone who says anything negative ("wait, that didn't make any sense" etc) usually gets dog piled in some circles for just not understanding genius or whatever. It does get a bit like, the films have made loads of money regardless of what this one critic thinks, why do you feel the need to defend them so hard?

Very much not against people passionately defending something they enjoy, I do that too. But sometimes it seems to come close to crossing over into something else.

I don't think I've ever observed similar behaviour with a clothing brand. I'm not sure how that would work...something like "that t-shirt is a little dull for my tastes" "YOU JUST DON'T GRASP THE COMPLEXITIES OF THE LOGO CONTRASTED WITH THE UNCONVENTIONAL STITCHING IN THE COLLAR!" ??

(Anonymous) 2019-05-05 06:45 pm (UTC)(link)
And I bet those people probably exist! Like, clothing brands probably do have stans. This is the Internet, after all. But that would also... suck. Like... right?

One of my high school bullies tried to humiliate me in front of everyone be shouting about how I didn't have a designer label schoolbag and I'd dared to slightly touch hers with my "shitty" bag as I was setting it on the floor in the general proximity of hers.

So absolutely I can believe there will be clothing brand stans out there somewhere.

It was a very long time ago but I once had someone tell me with no irony that they liked to judge people according to what they wear. They said they were wearing a Lacoste shirt and Lacoste shorts (at the time a fairly nice brand.) I told them that the clothes I was wearing came from K-mart (also true) and it was like they did not know what to say about that. I'm not sure they even believed me.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-06 08:18 am (UTC)(link)
I... do not understand this way of thinking at all. Like not even a bit.

And yet the Last Jedi seems to get the opposite response where you can't like it without being piled on and how the narrative is that it is an objectively terrible movie and that everyone hates it, even though neither of those things are true.

That's a good point actually! Yet the driving force behind that seems to be coming from a similar area in that it's still people being really protective of a brand. It's just unfortunately for TLJ/Star Wars the official people behind it did it "wrong" hence the opposite reaction to anyone who says they enjoyed it.

It's probably a whole other comment or phenomenon where I find it odd how alleged loyalty means people are essentially hate watching. Nostalgia isn't a good enough reason to stick around if you hate the experience that much.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-05 06:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Well that makes the secret even sillier. Are people not supposed to talk about shit they like?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-05 06:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't talk about it like this particular franchise of blockbuster movies is uniquely morally valuable? Don't talk about it like this particular franchise of blockbuster movies doing well at the box office is important in any sense?

There's a difference between talking about things you like, and rooting for a corporate brand, and wayyyyyy too many people do the latter.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-05 06:15 pm (UTC)(link)
BREAKING NEWS: People like to see something they are interested in do well.

Apparently Nerds are learning something the Jocks have known for years. No wonder they get beat up.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-05 06:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I saw a headline recently about how "This May the 4th, Star Wars fans should be sad because Endgame is going to become the highest box-office film of all time"

Seriously, what the fuck is that shit?

Also, I don't understand what point you're making with the nerds vs jocks stuff

1) That headline has to have been clickbait. 2) Box office returns do influence what movies will be made in the future, but at these franchises' levels the difference might as well be a rounding error.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-06 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Of course it's clickbait, but it's still an attitude that apparently exists in the universe

(Anonymous) 2019-05-05 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
there's a difference between a fan and an evangelist

like literally, i'm not making that term up. evangelists are the holy grail of users, people who actively go out of their way to get people into the thing they like and who are loyal to [brand/company/studio]

idk why this is such an outrageous concept to you just because it's such a prevalent thing in nerd culture

(Anonymous) 2019-05-05 06:16 pm (UTC)(link)
They're welcome to, but I think it's also worth considering why sequels and reboots are so prevalent, how oligopolistic the entertainment industry is, and how the structure of fandom has fundamentally changed since corporations have embraced fanwork (for the most part)

(Anonymous) 2019-05-05 06:33 pm (UTC)(link)
>why sequels and reboots are so prevalent

People like watching familiar things that they know will be good.

>how oligopolistic the entertainment industry is

It really isn't.

> how the structure of fandom has fundamentally changed since corporations have embraced fanwork

How so?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-05 06:36 pm (UTC)(link)
NAYRT

It really isn't

oh, word?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-05 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Disney is big. If geeks would rather complain about Disney being big than form fandoms around the absolute fucking shitload of independent sci-fi and fantasy creators, that helps Disney and hurts those creators.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-05 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
How does criticizing Disney help Disney? How is criticizing Disney incompatible with forming fandoms around independent creators? What does any of this have to do with the factual question of whether or not the entertainment industry is an oligopoly? I have so many questions!

(Anonymous) 2019-05-06 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
Every drop of time and attention you squander on Disney is time and attention you didn’t give to making their competition stronger. If that’s what you want, fine, but don’t get all pissy when you get called out.
