Ships You Can't Admit To

(Anonymous) 2019-05-18 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you ship anything that you don't feel you can mention to anyone IRL? If so, what ship(s)? Feel free to elaborate if you want to (i.e. Why can't you admit to shipping it? Are you worried people would make fun of you for it, or are you worried they'd actually be disgusted? Does never acknowledging that you ship it bother you or nah? etc.)

"Can't admit to" is extreme, but it's always awkward being a canon shipper. Only in fandom though, no one IRL has any idea either way.

Oh man, I feel like this is one of those things where RL and fandom are the reverse of each other. Like, when you ship anything non-canonical, most non-fannish people (NFPs) think that's kinda weird, but fandom folk are like, "Yeah, no shit, everybody ships that." Whereas my experience has been that most NFPs think shipping canonical pairings is super normal, and like, yeah, of course you ship that, you're meant to. Whereas it's the canon pairings that fandom tends to be derisive of.

RPS crack ships. Mostly I don't mention them because people might think I'm serious about it when I'm not

Yeah, I can see this. I haven't ever had any real people ships (yet), but if I had, it definitely seems like the kind of thing I couldn't mention to people.

Ohhh it's not the ships so much as ... the entire fandom thing.

Can't admit irl. Power level must be hidden.

If anyone ever found the shit I write I would be fired probably.

Largely I don't tell anyone irl about my shipping habits and only two people actually know I do: my bf who I told bc I felt comfortable enough to share it with him, and one of my bffs who... accidentally found out. Let him borrow my laptop for excell at uni, forgot I had an IE page with a fanfic on it open and he clicked on it by mistake xD. He was really apologetic about it and never made fun of me or was disgusted by it, though thankfully it was just a PG 'they fall in love' type fic so I think that's why.

Otherwise it doesn't really come up but my bf does like trying to predict what I might end up shipping in a show/movie, and has before now had me squee at him over a ship I liked(while we were watching tbf, it wasn't just out of the blue).

I don't talk fandom with people face to face, but I was the OP of yesterday's Sansa/Sandor secret and people responded to that by calling anyone who ships it a pedo. I didn't even like the pairing until this season and both characters are adults in the show so I didn't think it was a big deal. That was wild.

Re: Ships You Can't Admit To

(Anonymous) 2019-05-18 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel like SanSan has been controversial since the fandom was book-only so that might be part of it.

Re: Ships You Can't Admit To

(Anonymous) 2019-05-18 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I can understand it being controversial if Sansa were 13 (which it sounds like she is in the books?) but if she's an adult in show canon, and that's the age one ships her at, then it really doesn't seem like much of a controversy.

Not that I'm in favor of viciously sending people hate because they ship a fictional 13-year-old with a fictional adult. But I can definitely see why that would be controversial and a big squick for a lot of people. Whereas getting all moralistic and anti about a pairing because, "OMG she was way underage when they met eight years ago!" just seems a bit absurd to me.

Honestly? Lately I'm hesitant to admit I actually am okay with Romione and I kinda really like Hinny. I know they have their issues in the books but I dont think they're an unworkable as some people think.

My sister and her husband argue probably as much as Ron and Hermione probably would. And imo they're doing just fine.

I like Ginny as a character and personally I was able to see the buildup to who she was in book 6. I've seen the ship criticized bc "JK basically made Ginny Harry's ideal girl" and I'm like..."so...what?"

Like sure maybe she designed Ginny to eventually fit what Harry would want in an SO. I see no reason why that's that bad. In the books she played roles other than Harry's girlfriend. That's what's important.

Also imo they have a connection because they both had a very deep and in a way, intimate run in with Voldemort. And it really affected who they became, re: being dedicated to fighting him.

Also. In general? I'm okay with canon/OC. I dont think a person needs an excuse or a reason to pair a canon character with an original one. If they make it work for me, hey it works. Not everybody will be into it but so long as the author enjoyed themselves writing it...whatever.

I like both pairings but I also think they could have been written much better in the books. We just didn't see enough of it IMO.

I don't talk about shipping IRL at all unless it's an observation on a canon ship. I save my blathering and my feelings on ships and who I personally ship for the internet. It's not so much that I couldn't admit to it if I wanted (lol my sister ships Elladan x Elrohir) it's just that, in person, I tend to be pretty self-contained.

I'm really into ships featuring senior-aged characters and wish it was more commonly explored in fandom. I'm pretty open with being into older men and women but won't admit to -how much- older.

The worst is when there's a ship I hate, and then one or both of the people gets genderflipped and I immediately fall in love with it

I hate it and I love it

I would not admit to any of my ships IRL for the most part. But I did make a secret about shipping a middle-aged man with a 13 year old boy once, I guess. I have a bunch of incest ships too.

Peter/Tony, aka Starker.

I've always been comfortable acknowledging my ships to my friends and family. I don't chatter on and on about them, because I know most people don't really get it, but it's no secret that I ship things and read fanfic.

I don't feel like I can admit to shipping Peter/Tony, though - even though I only ship it if Peter is a minimum of 17 before anything happens. Like, I genuinely have no idea whether my friends would just shrug, or whether they'd be super disgusted and question my moral character.

I have one close friend who's quite into the MCU, and who ships things herself casually, and we talk about shipping stuff sometimes. I'd really like to talk about my ship with her, but I just don't know if she'd be ok with it.

the fuck, I would never talk about shipping irl unless I was at a convention in cosplay and someone came up wanting to talk fandom ships for the character I was dressed as, and even then, I might let them spew their squee for a while until I could suss out whether we might have any ships in common (99% of the time that's a big nope) and only then would I chat about it.

but even in fandom spaces, I don't admit to certain incest ships. I love me the fuck out of some Ma Chao/Ma Dai (cousins) and I'd even read good hot Sima Shi/Zhao (brothers) if you had some to link. but I don't really want to talk about them and you can't make me admit to it off anon.

All of them. I don't talk about shipping except maybe with my partner.

I real life, I can't admit to most of my Tolkien ships. The only person I talk about Tolkien with in real life is my dad, and he's homophobic and would generally be offended by shipping anything non-canon.

Valjean/Cosette especially cause I like it creepy... but the Les Mis fandom can be pretty uptight

Like lots of other people have said, I don’t talk about shipping at all irl. The ships I wouldn't admit to in front of other fans are my incest ships.

I ship anything and everything in my newest fandom, including these two brothers together--but the shameful part is not because eww incest, only because there is absolutely zilch to support the pairing in canon, it all accidentally stems from my extended headcanons that grew out of hand.

Re: Ships You Can't Admit To

I would never mention to anyone IRL that I do fandom stuff. Never ever.

I ship an incest pairing so yeah... I keep that on the down low.
