Favorite horror things

[personal profile] philstar22 2019-06-08 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
What are your favorite horror things: movies, tv, books, games, whatever? Looking for some new stuff to try.

Not a big horror buff at all, but I do really admire horror fiction when it's well done.

Fave Horror Movies:

It Follows
The Descent
The Babadook
Mama
28 Days Later
Let The Right One In

Fave Horror Novel:

Night Film by Marisha Pessl - It's kind of a weird, creepy detective horror...cocktail? It's a bit Lynchian, in that 'leading you down the garden path until you don't know what's real and everything is wrong' kind of way.

It's been a decade since I read it and maybe it'd just seem hokey now, IDK, but I remember liking Stephen King's first collection of short stories, Night Shift.

Fave Horror TV:

I hesitate to call Hannibal horror, but it's horror-esque, and really good.

I prefer psychological horror over slasher. Two of my favourite horror movies are The Orphanage and The Endless.

Bizarre stomach problem (TMI)

[personal profile] kribban 2019-06-08 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
For the past eight days I've had this strange ailment where I am extemely nauseous upon waking up to the point of vomiting (no, I am not sexually active) and I'm constipated (haven't had a normal BM since this started.)

I've been to the doctor who took a blood test to rule out infection and then he told me to wait and see.

I'm just so over the nausea. I've tried everything; eating directly upon waking, fasting until lunch, drinking water, not drinking water, eating ginger. :-(

That sucks, I'm sorry to hear that. You haven't started any new medications or taken a course of antibiotics, by chance? Has your diet changed prior to this?

One thing you might want to doublecheck on is electrolyte imbalance, which can happen easily when you're vomiting or have diarrhea, even if you're drinking plenty of water. Maybe try to Pedialyte? I don't think abstaining from water will help at all, and might make your nausea worse if you get dehydrated.

No new meds or diet, no.

I do have electrolytes at home, will try some.

Definitely don't skip drinking water, it won't help the constipation at all. In fact, I'd make sure you were drinking an adequate amount. It doesn't have to be 8 cups a day so no need to go overboard. Sipping some chicken or beef broth might help and counts as liquids, too.

Kind of ringing my alarm bells for bowel obstruction.

A food combo that sounds gross but is widely recommended in the chronic illness community when you're sick: saltine crackers and applesauce. Slow, small bites of alternating each. For some reason, this actually soothes nausea for me.

Honestly, carbonated drinks really help my nausea. Except gingerale, ironically.

Mineral water and cracks? :[ That helps my nausea a little.

It sounds like your constipation is leading to a build-up of gas. Enough gas can trigger your gag reflex and make you nauseous. I recommend Pepto Bismol for the gas.

For the constipation, you might want to add more fiber to your diet or take a fiber supplement like Benefiber (it's a flavorless powder that dissolves in liquids.) Drinking more liquids in general can help soften up the stool.

I'm thinking you have nausea from gas.

Do you blog about nerdy things? Do you read blogs about nerdy things?

(Fandom counts but doesn't have to be fandom.)

Ehhhh, yes and no? I feel like I talk about them a fair amount but it's sort of secondary to making dumb jokes that I think are funny

No, but I do write FAQs for obscure incremental idle games and make spreadsheets for optimizing resource gains

I’m not smart enough to write about or understand nerd stuff.

How to deal with not caring

[personal profile] dani_phantasma 2019-06-08 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel like I find it hard to care about things or get excited about things without caffeine. I lose motivation so much no matter how hard I try.

Even going to a mall I used to love isn’t as entertaining any more. Who cares it’s just stuff. It’s such a miserable place to be in but I don’t know how to get out of it.

Is this growing up or growing out of things? It really sucks. Everything was happier when I was a child. I’m starting to feel like my life is just over

Sounds like depression, tbh. Or you could just need a change of pace. If you can, try travel? It doesn't have to be anywhere exotic, just a daytrip or a short roadtrip. Not only are new experiences envigorating, but they often give you a new appreciation for your everyday life, too.

The first thing that I would pursue is depression. And talking to a therapist about depression would most likely also go into a lot of the other possible reasons that you might be feeling that way.

Also <3 <3 <3 that feeling is so hard and I'm sorry you feel that way

This is how I felt when I was depressed. See a doctor.

This sounds like depression. Losing interest in everything and being miserable all the time=/=adulthood.

You might have developed something of an addiction to caffeine if you drink a lot of it and might be experiencing 'crashing' when you come down off of it. Or your dopamine levels in general might be low; exercise (such as jogging) and thought provoking literature ('mental stretching') was the only thing that helped me feel half way at ease on a day to day basis.
